user reviews of Alto Lounge, Reading

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This is a cross between a bar and a bistro. Too small for its function really, and can get very cramped when all the tables are taken. That said, it's customer friendly, has a wide range of customers at different times of day, and serves very decent burgers.

If you like a pint filled with strange white Debris then the Alto Lounge is your place. The three of us all enjoyed the challenge of trying to scoop out the unidentified sludge (it was in the bitter and the lager) and it made for excellent conversation. There was great speculation about what the white bits were but the barman was confident it wouldn't kill us if we drank it.
When we switched to bottled beer we were disappointed that our conversation turned to more mundane subjects.
I am going back but am taking a sieve next time.

Not sure why this bar is listed under "Reading" and not with the others in "Caversham" but there we go! Very popular and busy little cafe/bistro/bar type place which is great for young mothers who meet for coffee in the morning and diners and drinkers in the evenings. Food is pretty good with regular specials and a nice range of tapas. One beer (Toga Man Bitter from The Bristol Beer Factory) but they also have a range of bottled beers - often from Bath Brewery and some excellent wines. Fresh orange juice and it's very popular for coffee and cakes. Newspapers and boxed games available and overall a good adition to the Caversham scene.

A great addition to Caversham. Lovely atmosphere. Very family friendly

The beer is fine, though limited tap choice.

Tried a chicken and beef burger here, both good, but the buns are too heavy.
