The Black Bull, Blaydon

A proper old fashioned bar that is welcoming and friendly with three well kept real ales. Usualy Black Sheep and Wylam Gold with an alternating Adnams Broadside and Directors Choice. No juke box TV or fruit machine. There are some fine photos of old Blaydon before it had its heart ripped out and a real fire in the colder months as well as a large patio for warmer times. Well worth a trip out from Newcastle and easily acessable by public transport. The new managers have only been there just over a year but they have made a great effort and it shows. If you want a pub were the quality of the beer and good conversation are high on the list then this is it.

The Alma, Windsor

It is certainly out of the way! I thought this pub would be right up my street with it's quirkyness, and it certainly is that, but the beer was only so so and the service poor. The clientelle seemed mostly interested in themselves in a hippy chic sort of way. By the time we got there my partners palate was jaded so she wanted a vodka and tonic the charge for this greatly lightened my wallet. Dissapointing

The Windsor Castle, Windsor

Sat outside in the beer garden on a hot day in June with a fine view of the great park. The beer was certainly acceptable and while I did not eat the food looked to be of a good quality and they were certainly a busy enough kitchen. One of the better pubs in Windsor

The Vansittart Arms, Windsor

When I was there they had four hand pumps on. All of them with London Pride!

Better pubs in the area

The Duke of Connaught, Windsor

Stayed here for Two nights in June. The room was only 50 a night (no breakfast) which I thought was very reasonable for Windsor. There was nothing wrong with the room that a good clean wouldn't have solved.

They are at least trying to have a go in the bar. The food was good quality bar foodand the music(buskers) seemed varied, free and well attended (if a bit self gratifying) There was a decent range of ales on for a Greene King pub all of which were very drinkable

The White Swan, Kelso

Like the rest of Kelso it can get a bit mad on a Saturday night

The Wellington, Riding Mill

This place is the victim of its own success. Dont go near it on a Sunday or Bank Holiday. Otherwise the beer is Ok and the food is above average bar food. The service can be slow. Visit it for lunch on the first Monday after the kids go back to school.

The Bridge End Inn, Ovingham

A good local bar but not in the way LisaHas found it. Usually three real ales and the Cumberland Ale is the best kept I have had anywhere (and there have been a few!)A good place to take a crossword to on a Sunday lunchtime to recover from the night before.

The Boathouse Inn, Wylam

Now 12 ales and the brewery tap for the Wylam Brewery. Does what it says on the tin

Revolution, Newcastle

When I was last in her all the staf seemed to think that all the customers where all called the sam name "Everything OK youse Guys?" Ok bar food and worth a stop off for the interior

Gold Cup, Newcastle

Don't even think about it unless you're doing a sociology degree on lowlife

The Duke of Wellington, Newcastle

This used to be the only real ale haven in Newcastle and it still sells a good range. A decent little boozer.

29 Jun 2007 13:57

The Forth Hotel, Newcastle

This used to be a good bar until it was refurbished a few years ago ago they pulled out its spirit and replaced it with bland complacence.

Barluga, Newcastle

Its not expensive and pretentious. Its pretentiou and very expensive!

The New Inn, Salisbury

A bit twee but I would not let that put you off. Being a stranger I did not realise I was in such peril from the awful badger but the one I had did not taste as rough as its posterior. A good place to fall into for one before carrying on the the Wig and Quill

The Frothblowers Arms, Salisbury

I love the name and the walls inside have some interesting info about the original frothblowers. It was a pitty about the loud music and the so so ale

Ox Row, Salisbury

Just above average. I don't know if it would be so busy if it wasn't on the market place.

The Chough, Salisbury

I visited this pub with my partner and while it was early we where the only two persons in. Maybe its something to do with paying 7.50 for a pint of (average) 6X and a glass of red wine!!

The Salamander, Bath

On my two day visit to Bath this would be at the top of my list. I was there early but I can see the potential for it to get busy. Excellent well kept ales and efficient service with people actually talking to each other. What more could you want?

29 Jun 2007 13:23

Sam Wellers, Bath

This was highly entertaining. A group of older men in kilts trying to entertain some obviosly embarresed German Ladies. Otherwise some reasonable ales and just above average bar food.

29 Jun 2007 13:06

The Raven, Bath

A good selection of well kept ales. Busy but in a friendly sort of way. I was only in bath for two days but this was one of the few pubs I went to twice (there was a lot to get around but I tried!)
