Looks like you've got a serious case of Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) on your hands there MisterX but now you've sussed it, they'll disappear for a while and re-surface under another username or anonymous. The funny thing is - they actually think they are clever ! No rating left, not been in that area for a few years now. If you're new to the site, click on usernames and you'll see where others have been and what they've said about other pubs.

Yes Lord.Lucan and if you check all these new reviews of the pub you strangely find that it's each persons *only* pub review on the whole site too! LOL

Jokers indeed, make up all the things you want about this place "1 posters" but facts remain facts - it truly is an awful pub!

I can't understand all of the negative reviews for the Cornubia. I've always received a pleasant welcome by all of the bar staff and the beer has always been in top condition! And it's chav free!

Indeed Mr "Right Boss" and his woman have departed to Stoke, evidently. And thankfully not Bradley Stoke,Chew Stoke or Stoke Bishop but Stoke-On-Trent.

The new man at the helm worked here in the Smiles/"coughing banshee" days, but isn't too bad a bloke. He won't ever in a million years come near Mike or Ross/Karen,but he deserves a chance.

On my visit though the Old Sarum was rather flat, though not Sarsons. Funny the last time I had Hidden beer(Spoons Trowbridge) it was similar. However an acquaintance of mine of good opinion did state that the Great Western Brewery beers on recently have been good.

Good to see the place going the right way again, developments shall be awaited.

The previous landlord has gone, we hear. I'll try it again after Friday before last's triple delight of Sarsons, Sarsons & Soup.

Update: Apologies due re cans of Natch as corrected by steve_stars. Glad to see they are long gone which just shows how far this pub has improved. A hidden gem which lately could show other Hidden gems how to serve good beer...
14 Jul 2008 08:47
Much improved (sorry boys, the barmaids in basques have been banished!) with good choice of ale and friendly service. Ought to lose the cans of Natch, mind.
8 Jul 2008 16:50
Tidy and friendly, this rare example (for Bristol anyway) of a back street city centre boozer is hitting top form. Top quality ales at good value prices make it ideal for a swift one after work.

Visited the beerfest I plugged to find both ales I had to a bit tired. Beerfest ales were on stillage and were slightly cooled but neither tasted great(Arbor Dunkelbeer and Cotleigh Blue Jay.) Tapped too long? Will return though, staff were pleasant, they just should have chosen a better weekend than the harbour festival. Down a tick, though hopefully only temporarily.
5 Aug 2008 20:40

Now Camera regional pub of the year. A 4th real ale pump has been added.

The mens toilets downstairs have been revamped and redecorated. Stunning, slightly scarey graffiti.

yes, agree with earlier commnets. on my most recent visit, the Festivity was superb.
with the usual friendly service and excellent value food, quickly served, this pub is a top-rated Bristol venue.

Really can't fault thas pub. Superb beer from Bath Ales and excellent food.Well worth seeking out along with the Hillgrove Porter Store down the road.

This pub isn't only great for the beer, but always has Ashton Press cider on tap, and a great range of bottled alternatives.

Reviews by BITE users:

Hmm, having read the glowing reviews I was a little disappoionted in the beer selection, quality and price. There were three beers on, London Pride, Butcombe and RCH East Street Cream. All were kept on stillages behind the bar and they suffered from the afternoon heat. Same goes for the Thatchers Traditional cider. Not undrinkable, just could have been much nicer, especially when you're paying £2.80 for the East Street Cream and £2.20 for the cider. All in all, a nice spot to visit, maximum curiosity value, but I wouldn't go out of my way again. The lady behind the bar was very pleasant, even though she was doing all the work herself (landlord laid up with a swollen ankle).
12 May 2008 09:28
"age yellowed" glasses ?!? Frankly never noticed this Pilkington, don't tell Mick or he will put the Cider up in price yet again! :-)

idiosyncratic,age-yellowed glasses, a structure looking like it's in danger of imminent collapse, good beer, unmissable

Best Wetherspoons I've been to and guest ales always changing. You don't get the usual idiots that you find in other Wetherspoons - probably because of it's location. And it's a lot cheaper than the rip-off bar in Temple Meads station.
10 Aug 2008 22:52
Still come in here virtually everyday after work and yes the beer is too cold...

A) Let It Warm Up

yes it takes a long time to get served at times.....

But Also has some of the friendliest most helpful bar staff around(and there are still idiots who order cappucino at ten in the evening)

I have never in 20months of visiting had one bad pint.......

KEEP UP THE EXCELLENT WORK GUYS!!

p.s. How about some Cheddar Ales on tap........;-)
4 Aug 2008 22:31
I think this is one of the best wetherspoons I have been in, always pop in after footy, while waiting for the train home.

Popped in with Mrs HofBear for a nightcap during recent visit to Brizzle, as was staying nearby. Glad we did - a real step back in time. Reminded me of old Coronation St clips of Ena Sharples in the Rover's Return, though far cosier. Clientele was predominantly 'mature' and 50-50 male-female split - a good sign. Seemed like a true local, where in the 'Cheers' tradition, everybody knew your name (except ours!). Seats at a premium, but was directed by friendly ladies on their way out to their vacated seats in the snug, so enjoyed some excellent Doom Bar and the splendid decor in comfort (6X & Sharp's IPA on too). Hope to return as part of a Redcliffe crawl on a future visit out west.
13 Jan 2008 22:40
Tittered to read the previous posting, don't worry the landladys bite is worse than her bark. In fairness what had happened was a knob came off in her hand(!) and entry was unsuccessful to where the light switches are. Normal service resumed later.

Range of beer now is Bath Gem,Wadworths 6X,Sharps Doombar and Sharps IPA. All very well kept.
19 Oct 2007 11:51
All in darkness just after 7 on Saturday 6th October; tried the door and was told in no uncertain terms to come back when the lights were switched on. Had no idea when this would be and had to catch a train so sadly can't say what the pub was like, however it doesn't seem to be run very professionally. May give it another go if Mrs High 'n' Mighty deigns to open at the appointed hour.

Tidy pub on the site of the old Brewery Tap I think it was owned by Smiles. Good food and ales.
I also enjoyed the "bUTCOME Blond".
1 Aug 2008 10:19
good choice of real ales , though I may be biased ,as a favourite of mine is bUTCOME Blond , nice cider ashford press , slightly disapointed with choice of lager , but hell you can't please everyone , very good food , large portions , competitive price , friendly bar staff , nice place.
1 Aug 2008 08:56
I think Butcombe have done a super job on this - there's a good feel to the place and I think it's a good venue to market good beer to the under 40 age-range; my drinking chums are certainly impressed with it.

Excellent range (and well-served) ales, complimented by an interesting selection of bottled stuff.

Inside is light and airy; modern, but not in a way that I think would date badly (so long as it's kept maintained).

Agree with the comment about the food; think I'll stick to the beer personally, although this would be a good place to take a partner for a relaxed date during the week, if you're willing to spend a few quid.

I concur that this place has a bright future, I look forward to my next visit.

a selection of perfectly kept ales from Bath and Skinners Brewery, very friendly staff
3 Aug 2008 22:28
the three tables outside virtually triple the maximum occupancy, great tasting pint of butcombe blonde was quaffed at this bath ales pub last saturday. friendly staff and visitors make it very welcoming 4 a first time visitor too, 7/10
17 Jul 2008 19:47
Teeny-tiny basic pub which served up the best pint of Bath ale I had all trip over Christmas (and I had a few).

Check out the view from the bridge, especially of the historic lead shot tower, which happily has a grade listing.

Walkable from the town centre and Bristol Temple Meads - make sure you try it.

Reviews by BITE users:

This is a great old pub. The stone walls, stone floor, and low beams in a perfectly proportioned space make you immediately feel like you've entered upon one of the great country pubs. The lively number of people in there at a weekday lunchtime lets you know everyone thinks so as well. But it wasn't overly crowded, everyone that wanted a place to sit seemed to get one. The crowd seemed a mix of regulars and pub explorers.

The menu is appropriatley simple and the service is cheerful and quick.

Why isn't this place my local?

The only drawback is that, as others have pointed out, that despite have 5 or 6 ales available there didn't seem to be anything intriguing.

I went with a Butcombe, always enjoyable but available everywhere in that part of Somerset. Spitfire, Courage etc while not being dreadful are even more dull. However, I didn't want to leave so we stayed for another round.
3 Jul 2008 18:17
An excellent old pub (of the basic country stonework and hearty fire variety) serving a good range of well-kept ales, mostly from the south west.

Went here on a winter's evening for the first time in years during January and was sad to leave, a real treat for lovers of good ale and good old pubs. Far enough out of Portishead for the local gene puddle element to be absent. Not easy to find unless you know where you're going - but well worth the effort.

A gem - go visit.
12 May 2008 22:06
Good selection of 6+ ales and friendly service from this hidden gem , would never have known about the place if it wasnt for finding "PH" on a ordnance survey map!! 8/10

Reviews by BITE users:

I know it was Saturday of the Harbour festival but there were only 3 in on our visit. We sat outside with Skipton brewery ale,and something obscure for Kernow, both of which were moderate. There were no mongrels marauding on this visit. The sarcastic(in my opinion) barman decided to play his loud techno music at 5pm thus eradicating his few punters, and deterring us from having another. Like has been said before definitely not the cream of the normally good Dawkins crop.
5 Aug 2008 20:35
A good stop for quality ale, but didn't really carry the charm or ambience of places like the Hillgrove PS - a minor gripe.

Still worth seeking out though and I will be back.
6 Jun 2008 20:19
I didn't challenge my low pint served by a barman who seemed preoccupied by the arrival of his relief because I thought that it might have been a lined glass(it wasn't). London Pride,2 from St Austell and Cheddar Best(very good) were the range. Cesspit toilets. Dogs wandering all over the gaff.

Maybe a bit over-rated by some and not nearly as good as the Hillgrove.

Only been in twice, but both times I have really enjoyed myself. good atmosphere, decent beer and handy for temple meads
11 Jul 2008 00:21
Good beer & full of (ageing) hells angels when I was in. Found myself singing along with the background music.Much better boozer than first impressions would suggest.
9 Apr 2008 17:19
Scatty-girl-who-can't-count behind the bar aside, a pretty good time-killer with acceptable ale choices. Actually quite quiet during the day, so is a better bet for a liquid lunch than the then-hustling Templar up the road.

Almost impossible to find if you're not equipped with maps and patience, but well worth it.

Beer is straight from barrels on stillage and is in good condition. the range is fairly small, but it varies throughout the month.

Inside is a bit eclectic, as mentioned previously it's basically a tarted-up barn and there's lots of old tat/interesting paraphernalia scattered around, along with some cobwebs (don't go if spiders give you the heebee-jeebies!).

A nice atmosphere pervades inside.

Well worth the trip, will return.

Great pub. Good range of well-kept beers. Next to impossible to find - which makes the journey that bit more worthwhile. Purrfect pub crawl = Here, the Miners Rest, the Black Horse & the Blue Flame. Days wouldn't get much better than this. Free scout 'navigation' badge to all new customers.

This pub was recomended to me long before i moved to Portishead,They described it as a very busy eating place, with good pub food, and a fine selection of drinks on offer.Well have been on many occasions now and the recomendee,s are right and, i have to agree,The previous comments regarding the OAP,s could be probably right,But what i do not understand is,as the pub is open all day,why do people want to eat and drink there fill from 12-00 till 14-00hrs,then moan about it being full or having to wait,They provide an excellent allday service,so why descend in the first 2 hours.Whatever happened to commonsense,Anyhow i find the Windmill very good indeed in all aspects of it,s trade,we could do with more places like this around, well done
28 Jul 2008 19:41
Visited here on a wet winters Sunday evening, got a friendly welcome from the barman and barwoman(landlady?? big blonde?) Had some excellent RCH and Arbor Ales IIRC. Not enough stools at the bar. Plenty people having grub for late on a Sunday afternoon. (None of this crap that you can't get food after 4pm or so on a Sunday which is good.)

Friendly local passed some advice-watch out if visiting on midweek afternoons when busloads of pensioners turn up. (Whether or not they'll be here this summer with this free bus travel mallarkey developed into a great discussion!!!!)

A good pub, only negative I could say is maybe it needs to be a bit kinder to the drinking customers.
12 May 2008 22:19
Was indeed a poor pub when known as the Hole in One - a classic case of much potential unfulfilled.

Potential now fulfilled, wonderful views over the Channel towards Wales, a very good range of ales in very condition. Service polite and prompt.

Clientele are mixed, but mostly white, middle-class young locals, with some older aleheads in residence. Can get quite hot inside sometimes.

Only quibble with the overhaul is that you can no longer drink in the old windmill itself, that had a lot of character, shame to see it closed off.

Would recommend highly, along with the Poacher.
