Rambler Country House, Edale

user reviews of the Rambler Country House, Edale

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

5 casks, handy location for the station. Fairly modern interior.

Visited yesterday for a quick pint after a long walk in the countryside which surrounds Edale. The pub looks great from outside, and is clean and warm inside. There were four real ales on offer, the two of which were tried being perfectly pleasant.
The pub does suffer slightly in that every room has tables clearly set out for meals, and this detracts from the ambience of what should be a great pub, and lends it to an air of being a little similar to a nice cafe.
Another big negative was the price. Okay, so it is in the Edale Valley, but does this justify beer at £7 for two pints ? - I think not.
All in all, a nice place to visit after a walk, but not one I would frequent regularly due to the over charging of their beer, which though okay, was not worth anything special as reflected in the price.
SouthYorkshireman - 6 Mar 2014 14:21
Hmmm, reading the reviews from the last couple of years or so, I can't believe I went to the same pub. Rounded off a walk here last weekend with a couple of beers and some food and really enjoyed both. Beer in good nick and food plentiful and tasty. New owners??
littledrummerboy - 19 Mar 2013 21:57
Admittedly only ever visited after long walks in the hills when a pint is needed, but I've never had a bad drink here. Good selection of ales (4 today) always well kept and served with a smile.. Scenic beer garden summer, log fire for winter, just what the doctor ordered! Never eaten here though..,

I've just joined this site and it's some time since I experienced this ordeal of a pub. I found myself reading the reviews, laughing out loud and nodding in agreement. All these bad reviews are absolutely spot on, - all true.

visited this pub a week ago for food and drink .The pub is dirty and the food is mush on a plate ,bear watery, staff rude would never re visit

It wasn't the barmaid's fault, she was as much a victim of lacklustre management at this alleged three star inn as we were. There had been a folk evening two days earlier and the cellar had been drunk dry of real ales. Two days to obtain fresh supplies is clearly beyond the landlord. If it were only that I wouldn't be writing this but, when we ordered lunch, two of the dishes were incomplete: no coleslaw on a chicken sandwich with salad despite the menu promising it, and pork loin chops served with no vegetables although the specials board advertised fresh veg in season. When we complained the coleslaw appeared on a dish "because one of you is non-dairy and we thought it best". True but they also said the coleslaw was dairy free so it didn't matter! On the loin chops and the missing vegetables, the chef said that someone must have altered the specials board as vegetables were not usually included. But still, frozen peas and boiled carrots were eventually provided. Just when are frozen peas out of season? To cap it all, the advertised malted multigrain bread of the sandwiches was stale!

My Partner and I stayed at the Ramblers Inn Saturday 30th October 2010 and fully recommend it, food was lovely!! staff were lovely!! the room we stayed in was excellent no complaints whatsoever!! cant wait to re-visit. I have read a lot of bad reviews, which i have found out to be because of the previous management, thankfully we didnt visit while they were there. We also visited the Nags Head (which incidentally has also had bad reviews) the staff were very friendly, the atmosphere was great, so once again no complaints.
Max19 - 31 Oct 2010 20:21
My wife and I, together with around 20 friends stayed at the Rambler in October 2010 for a long weekend's walking. The place had just been taken over by a couple of new joint managers, Maraide (not sure about spelling) and Chris. They made us very welcome, and we were perfectly satisfied with the accommodation, food and beer. To judge by other reviews, it would appear that the place has been rather poorly managed in the recent past. It's a bit early to say how the new people will do, but they certainly seem eager to improve its reputation. The location could not be better, of course, let's hope the service, ambience, etc., will in future match it.
Barrywhite - 14 Oct 2010 14:33
Made a return visit last night, partially out of morbid curiosity to see if they could keep up their level of exceptionally poor service, and partially under duress at the alternative prospect of a chilly 45 minute wait at the station.

To the management's credit, there didn't appear to be any of the previously employed surly staff that so marred our previous visits. We were served by a nice young gentleman who we had a pleasant conversation with, acknowledged our efforts in returning the empty glasses to the bar, and obviously took some pride in his job. This simple change lifted the whole experience ten fold and made me seriously consider returning at future point through choice. It's certainly too early to say that the Ramblers has turned the corner. But based upon my experience last night, I would like to think they are heading in the right direction.
slipdigby - 11 Oct 2010 11:31
The barman didn't seem to want to tell me where the toilet was. I can only assume it was because he thought I was sniffing glue with the two youths (and their butane gas) who were sitting on the table next to us. Perhaps one of the staff could have asked them to leave. Instead, their customers left the pub, table by table. Perhaps they were waiting for a lock in?
lizzz54 - 3 Aug 2010 15:01
Popped in for a couple of halves early evening. Obviously a family food pub but they had four real ales on and the two I had were fine. Nothing to recommend about this place, but nothing bad about it either.
BUFFETBORE - 12 Jul 2010 14:57
Visited Bank Holiday Monday for a swift half. Choice of 4 real ales, the one I had was excellent. There were two others from Oakham Brewery in Peterborough which looked a bit hazy. Quite a few were eating and they all seemed quite happy with it all. No complaints but this was just a very very short visit.

Awful burger.
BlueLaser - 11 May 2010 19:53
Great location! Rubbish pub!
Didn't try the food after a very disappointing and pricey meal there a year ago but had a quick pint instead. Their website claims it offers 'a warm welcome'. Nope: the staff are as sullen and disinterested as ever. What a wasted opportunity this place is. Head down the road instead (not great, but much better) or pack a sandwich and a bottle of ale.
Stein - 7 May 2010 15:34
Do not go to this pub, it is terrible and very over priced. After a long day me and my family called at this pub for some tea. We were extremely hungry and I thought I would have eaten anything. That was until I was served with food I had ordered. Me and my husband both has burger and chips. It was supposedly Prime aberdeen Angus beef. Although I cannot be 100% certain it wasn't because I didn't see the packet it came out of but I would be my life on it that it wasn't. To say it cost 12 or something it was completely slapped together no presentation at all. The actual beef tasted terrible and the chips were green. I asked for my money back as it was not satisfactory at all. This is something I have never done before in my life. The lady behind the bar said it had to go back to the chef. What he was going to do with it I had no idea, but I wasn't about to find out, so we left. Basically we threw 26 down the pan. My son did like his ice cream though. As for the silly rules they have in this pub well, I asked for a pint of tap water (normally I'd ask for beer but I am pregnant). The bar maid replied I can't do a pint of tap water but I can do 2 halves as we sell half pints of bottle water. I said I didn't want bottled water and she replied yes I know you want tap water but I can only do half. I was really confused about this!!! I then heard the waitress fill the 2 half glasses up from the tap.I am still confused!! Also when I asked for my money back the lady behind the bar wasn't interested and stated that she was busy dealing with someone else. When I said the chips were green she replied they are home cooked chips. To which I said the home cooked chips that I make aren't green!! Just take my advice and nearly everyone else on here do not go even if you are starving!!!!
hainley - 4 May 2010 16:32
Utter rubbish. We arrived around half eight on the Friday to find two rooms full of diners and one room with empty tables with "reserved" on them. We enquired if we could actually sit down and eat, to be told that they were reserved for residents. With half an hour until they stopped serving food, we asked why they were still reserved. "It's the rules. Two rooms for dining and one reserved for residents". With the Old Nags Head full (as we knew from the night before their food is very good) we went without dinner. Horrible place, ludicrously illogical rules for dining when for our party they could have had at least 60 off us. No residents in sight and an empty room of tables. If this place was in the centre of Sheffield, it would deservedly have gone out of business by now. Surly and unfriendly and leaves a sour taste in the mouth. Avoid this place like the plague.
Nebbing - 18 Apr 2010 17:13
well, my fears about Saturday night were realised! Started at the nag's head and the fire was lit and the place busy and quite tidy. the bogs were a bit scruffy, but there was a rugby match on and quite a few in there. not all pumps were on, but what was on was just ok, but overpriced. some of our group ate and unprompted they rated the food as overpriced and poor quality. a couple of pints then we moved down to the Rambler's. that pub is owned by the same mob as the nag's head (and the campsite and cafe there). snotty, can't be arsed style down at the Rambler's, overpriced beer and last orders called at 10.40 and chucked out at 11.00 Welcome to Derbyshire - not! Lovely village in a beautiful area, let down by the pubs where there is not another for 4 miles. they won't get our money again
averagebloke - 22 Mar 2010 17:14
Just come back from a weekend in Edale. Normally go to the Nag's but, as it was closed, ended up in the Ramblers. I will not be going back....

The menu is a mixed bag (to be generous), some was OK, the rest really not edible (Spinach and Stilton was interesting). But hideously overpriced. Only allowed in the two front rooms which are devoid of atmosphere and over lit despite there being a completely empty third room. This is apparently reserved for guests, however on the friday was completely empty for the majority of the evening (we were there for about 5 hours altogether). The beer was again a mixture of acceptable to hideous. One pint, the England's Glory, was practically undrinkable by all 6 of us who had it. The rest tasted stale as if the pipes had not been cleaned for weeks.

The following evening the pub was packed with walkers but again no use of the third room (all reserved apparently!). Tried to reserve a table, but only available for guests. Having sprained an ankle during the day girlfriend and I decided to get a room instead of stay in the tents, and asked if we did that could all 6 of our party sit down to eat. Answer...No, only two of us could sit and eat despite the room costing 90. We left and drove into the Castleton. Head to the Cheshire Cheese and you'll find great value food and a double room for 60/night. Much more acceptable.

The staff and management of The Ramblers have absolutely no clue how to run a pub or the clientele that is attracted to their establishment. They deserve to go bankrupt.

Am amused by other peoples experiences. Don't think we had it quite as bad as others, but certainly one of the worst pub experiences I've ever had.

it will be a very long time till i go again if ever , ale had gone off , food not good ,

After seeing the comments on this site I was a wary of my stay but I had already booked and paid a deposit so I went ahead with it. I have to say my stay was very positive. The staff were very helpful. And it was a nice warm atmosphere and the food was great.
4204031 - 20 Oct 2009 21:49
We stayed at The Rambler Inn as a group of 14. Having stayed there a few years ago, we were quite looking forward to our w/end. How times can change when different owners take over! I only wish we had read some of the previous reviews before booking. The place seems to be run by a group of college leavers for themselves. Our rooms weren't serviced over the w/end even though they charge 90 for B&B. The bar was closed promptly at 11pm. However, the staff contuned to drink & party till 3am at the rear of the building!! Even after complaining at the time the party never stopped. No wonder breakfast wasn't served until after 8.30am. I expect the staff were sleeping off hangovers! Don't be mislead by their website as it was built by the previous owners. Such a shame the wrong people get into the hospitality industry.
whyteboy - 10 Aug 2009 12:15
Not even a fantastic summer night could detract from the fact this pub didn't have much going for it. Despite the great setting; the quality of drinks and lack of atmosphere really let this place down.
farqualar - 15 Jul 2009 20:26
I have never seen so many obviously false reviews left by a pub's staff!
if you constantly have to do this to keep your rating up to a mighty 3.6, how sh*t must your pub be?
It might take less effort to improve things...
flashharry1965 - 24 Jun 2009 14:29
I completely agree with the negative reviews about this pub. The staff are extremely rude and arrogant. Added to which you have to spend 10 before you can use a deibt card - please can somebody drag this place into the 20th century? The food is overpriced and nothing special. The indoors lacks any atmosphere whatsoever. It's a shame, because a landlord and staff with the right attitude could turn this place into a real jewel owing to its location.
Calebelijah - 24 Jun 2009 13:07
I completely agree with the reviews posted here. The staff are useless! The barman wouldn't even say hello to me, the only thing he said the whole time I was at the bar was "three quid". He then kicked us out of a room after we'd sat down as it was "only the front two rooms" we could use, even though there were no signs or anything stopping us from going in. He wouldn't even give us a reason why. Needless to say we didn't stay for a meal in the end. AVOID at all costs!
jarofporter - 21 Jun 2009 12:17
One of the worst pubs I have ever been in. will not go in again, while it is under it's current management. Only reason it does well is the location. I'm sure once people go in once, they will never return. Customer service does not exist in this place.
aledrinker1 - 18 Jun 2009 13:07
just got back from a great stay at this lovely hotel
it was recommended by a friend so we just had to stay there!
i was a bit anxious as we were traveling with our 7 week old baby as well as two older children but i really needent have worried at all
the staff couldnt have been more helpful and friendly nothing was 2 much bother for them
the rooms were imaculate and beds extremely comfty!
the food was fabulous and a very wide selection to choose from
we thoroughly enjoyed our stay we will definately be returning and cant reccomend this hotel enough and came back feeling really refreshed!!
williams12345 - 1 Jun 2009 20:21
I've really tried to like this pub over the past few years. Location wise it is spot on, dead handy for a post-walk pint before getting the train home. I can quite happily tolerate the expensive food and drink as well as the hit and miss menu. However the service is the worst I have experienced in a pub for many years; rude, curt, and entirely unwelcoming. And to think they also provide accommodation! I'll be taking my custom to Castleton and Hope in future. Avoid.
slipdigby - 1 Jun 2009 12:13
awful.
they do sell food and drink - but it seems to start and finish there.
there is no excuse for the unpleasant attitude that the management display to paying customers.
ichiban - 1 Jun 2009 11:55
After a walk and a serious soaking we popped in the Rambler for a quick pint. Average beer, rude manager. I will never go in again which is a shame because the place could be a little gold mine. Unfortunately they will always make money off the daytrippers heading over the Pennine Way.
TheGrid - 11 May 2009 17:38
A decent pint and a reasonable lunch. But we were gobsmacked when one of our party was refused an extra roll to go with his soup. "Pay for a bead-basket or lump it".
mikeandjack - 14 Apr 2009 10:08
Best avoided at weekends if you want a quiet pint, as exemplified by over a hundred tables outside. The emphasis is on feeding the thousands of visitors, but a changing choice of four local beers and nice to see real cider and perry up here. The food looked well-portioned. Inevitably a place like this will feel a bit corporate but I thought they were doing it well enough, and there were some locals eating there. Right next to the station. Wouldnt make a special journey to the Edale pubs though.
krislee - 17 Mar 2009 18:36
Went here last weekend, nothing special.

Shame pubs like this can get away with a shoddy service just because they are in a truely beautiful area - alas people will still keep on comming through the doors.

A missed opportuniy.

Is that goat? sheep? nope spencer1963 it`s bulls``t we smell, your comment is like and advert a PR company would write. So all the people that know this site will totaly disreguard your cheap stunt.
Beersupper - 3 Jan 2009 10:02
I'm always suspicious of any review submitted by anyone who has only reviewed one pub, particularly when said review is highly complimentary of a pub that generally scores badly.

So, either Spencer doesn't go to pubs much, or the staff at the Rambler have pulled their socks up to the extent that he, a man who has never reviewed a pub before or since, felt moved to create a BITE account and put us right.

Or he's staff.
pablos13 - 2 Jan 2009 09:40
We would just like to share the enjoyable weekend we have just had at the rambler inn.

Food was a step up from bar food.

Staff were polite and pleasant.

The rooms were comfortable with beds to die for.

Good food was delivered fast and piping hot.

Free range eggs for breakfast. What more could you ask for?

Best of all, good selection of real ales.

The only suggestion we make to the management is to replace the T.V remote control as it didnt work even when the batteries were replaced.

Overall it was a marvellous weekend and we will be returning later in the year with friends.

spencer1963 - 20 Oct 2008 19:59
As keen walkers we walk in Edale a lot. We always eat and drink in the old nags head and have never had problems until now. I dont know if they have new management or chefs but we were disappointed on this visit. After being in the pub for two hours, having a well earned drink we went to the bar to order food .We were advised by a barman food was finished when we asked why the food was finished we were told that they were too busy and stopped serving early.
We then decided to try the other pub at the bottom of the village, The Rambler country house which we had always walked past because it didnt look very welcoming. I have to say that the food and service was very excellent. We went inside and it was very busy. We just managed to get a table as we were standing next to a table of 4 people who were just leaving.
We went to the bar and ordered. The food was very good and arrived within 15 minutes. The staff was very friendly. I must say I will be giving the old nags head a miss in the future and going to the Rambler country house instead.
How appearances can be deceiving

shaw65 - 10 Oct 2008 18:14
Just got back from a weekend at the Ramblers. I have never encountered such BAD customer service! A few examples include:

-they cleaned the floor in the bar with bleach at 10.30 at night, nice smell to go with beer.

-the waitress couldn't fetch a bowl of chips to go with the dinner they had just brought out, we had to queue at the bar to order them whilst meal going cold

-lights switched on and off repeatedly at 11.30 on the dot until everyone had gone

- refused to get us more toast because "the kitchen is closed" this was at 9.55, breakfast ends at 10.

-THEN asked us to leave the breakfast area so they could clear away, the hoover had already been brought out and plugged in

-rude, unhelpful bar staff

-a very rude manageress who spoke to her staff in a manner which they obviously copy with the guests

The only positives I can think of: the beds were comfy and the view is lovely.

I will definitely not be going there again, they do not deserve my money!

suejanedb - 28 Sep 2008 20:37
Terrible place. Visited with friends last night.

Tried to order food from a rude, mute bar man. We tried ordering one dish, to be told it was sold out. Tired another, same problem. We asked if anything else was sold out to be told it wasn't. Next dish we ordered - sold out! So we resorted to 6 chip butties - confirming with the lad that this would constitute chips in a breadbun. When they came, it was just chips - no bread. When we commented, the manageress flew off the handle, told us we were rude and we couldn't have ordered chip butties as they don't sell them. Some lad then marched out of the pub, swore at us (calling us "effing civvies" for some reason) before getting dragged back inside by the dragon of a manageress. Really quite bizarre!

Basically, I'd avoid this place like the plague. Terrible, rude, inefficient service and agressive staff. Horrible.
sheffield_john - 28 Sep 2008 12:48
My wife children and I have just recently stayed at this hotel. We decided to comment on our enjoyable stay but were so shocked at other comments on this website as our stay was quite the opposite. We booked a family room which accommodated 4. As soon as we arrived after a long journey the staff was extremely helpful offering to help us with our bags up two flights of stairs.
After settling in to our room. We went down to the restaurant. Seeing how busy it was we were worried about getting a table for the evening meal but were advised by a lady who I think was the manageress that there was already a table reserved for us as we were residents.
The food was very good and went down great with a pint of real ale. As a real ale drinker myself who drinks at many pubs I was rather happy at the large selection of real ales.
The hotel rooms were fantastic and looking out into the hills of Edale was a pleasure every morning.
As a lady my wife always checks the toilets and found them to be cleanest and best smelling toilets and to finish them off a vase of fresh flowers
My family and I will defiantly return to the rambler country house next summer and would recommend it to anyone

patterson68 - 24 Sep 2008 21:44
Had a very unhappy time at this pub for 2 reasons.

The first was that the manageress refused to consider the possibility that a pint of one of the beers she served was past its best. As all you real ale drinkers will know, it sometimes happens that the beer is not right. The generally accepted convention, on these unhappy occaisions, is that the unhappy drinker politely informs the bar staff of the unfortunate state of affairs with the golden nectar. The bar staff, usually, are only too pleased to put things right by offering to replace the undrinkable with something drinkable: without question. Happiness returns. Not at the Rambler. The manageress told me that there was nothing wrong with the beer (how could she know that without trying it?), that the chef, who drank it all the time, agreed with her and that noone else had complained. Here she ignored a comment from another drinker who thought that the stuff tasted a bit sour. Anyway, Madame Manageress was adamant. Nothing wrong with the beer, and no, it's no going to be replaced. I offered the offending drink to the chef, with my compliments and ordered and paid for something else.
Rambler 1: Customer 0.

The next engagement with the Manageress was over a mis-placed food order. After unhappily waiting 20 minutes for 2 desserts to arrive we queried the delay, only to be told brusquely by her that there was no record on her till system of us having placed the order. Even when I challenged 2 of her barmen on this and they admitted that I had indeed placed the order, she refused to recognise that the error was on her side of the bar, not mine. All she could bring herself to do was key in the order: she declined my suggestion that an apology for the error, for the delay and for her accusation that we lied about placing the order in the first place was dismissed with a curt "Thank you, good bye":
Rambler 2: Customer 0.

We quickly paid and left.

Oh, for the record. The main dish food (2 pie and chips: one venison burger: one ploughmans) had arrived within a couple of minutes of ordering. It must have been lined up in the kitchen even before it was ordered to have arrived that quick. Our expectations not to expect quality food to be produced that quick were confirmed: e.g bisto gravy, soggy pastry and what looked like re-constituted burger meat (could have been anything - almost certainly not venison).

ssmith2624 - 28 Aug 2008 16:36
I usually have a tendency to look hard for any pub's good points and, being aware of this, sometimes find it an absolute joy to find a place so bad that, without any guilt whatsoever, I can really put the boot in. Usually, only a Yates's, Walkabout or plastic Irish pub would provide satisfaction, so to find a pub in a beautiful Derbyshire village, a pub I remember from a stay at the nearby youth hostel with a great deal of pleasure, that is bad enough that I would not feel bad about damaging the owner's livelihood, is exceptionally surprising.
My beefs?
- no tapwater. If a pub caters for a clientele (walkers) who are likely to be a bit dehydrated, it is good manners and good business sense to offer them water, free of charge, as it costs nothing and failure to do so leaves a bad taste in the mouth that will stop them spending on food and beer. Oh, and it's a legal requirement. Trading standards should be interested...
- rudeness. Not acceptable, ever. Neither is a refusal to give the details of the licensee.
- food. This pub is now very definitely food-led (at least in terms of revenue). Again, no excuse for serving microwaved, grey tat and charging prices justifiable only by use of good ingredients and an actual chef.
- service. Got a problem with anything? Accept it. Cope. Deal. The management aren't interested.

Apart from the location, and passable beer, this pub has no redeeming features, as a number of other reviewers have found. Walk or drive on to Hope, or any of the other nearby villages, and let this place rot as it deserves. Zero from me.
pablos13 - 27 Aug 2008 12:11
Quite possibly the worst pub I have ever visited. Great location spoilt by a manageress with no concept of customer service and a vague understanding of licensing law. Pub has unfortunate staff presumably facing a daily hell from upset customers being served terrible, over priced food and suffering petty profit focused customer service. Manageress was happy to accept multiple drinks orders and a meal order for 9 people but wanted to charge for tap water. How pathetic is that? She also refused to tell us her name (a requirement of the licensing act) and even took away a piece of paper with her christian name only on it before lecturing about the Licensing Act. Sadly for the wannabe stealth landlady, High Peak Authority has the personal licence holder as Julieanne Mckenzie. Pub is owned by Dorbiere Ltd. Avoid at all costs!
walkingol - 27 Aug 2008 11:35
We went to this pub after a long hike, having had a wonderful meal there last year.
We arrived at 2 minutes to seven to be told we couldn't order food as the kitchen closed at 7pm (there were 7 of us altogether and we were VERY hungry- they lost a lot of money!).
We decided to at least have a drink and began to order some alcoholic and soft drinks, and asked for a pint of tap water - they refused to serve the tap water, saying it was their policy.
I'm not convinced this is legal - I thought if you have a licence to serve alcohol, you had to provide tapwater on request.
This pub sucks and I would not recommend it, especially to thirsty walkers, who they claim to be so friendly towards.

I knew we were headed for trouble when we placed our drinks order at the bar. I went to Rambler Pub with four of my children (twins aged 11, a toddler aged two and a baby aged 1).
I asked for two coca colas and then asked whether they did a cordial for the little ones.
I was advised they did so asked for two blackcurrant squashes. When the drinks arrived the blackcurrant was mixed with soda water. When I queried this the manageress told me that I should have specified water and as I did not they would not exchange them!
I then ordered the food in the following way:
"we'll have 3 portions of sausage and chips from the children's menu and, I quite fancy that, so I'll have the same".
I paid twenty seven pounds and sat down at the table. I had to get my own highchair as nobody brought one.
When the food arrived they brought 2 childrens meals and one plate with 6 sausages, beans and chips. I asked why there were so many sausages on the plate and was told that I had asked for 3 childrens meals and the same again!
I explained that I didn't mean that I wanted to eat 3 children's meals. I had meant I would like sausage and chips as well. I asked how much I had been charged for the plate of sausage and chips and was told by the very rude manageress that I had been charged 3 x childrens meal. Which meant 15!
When I pointed out that this would make sausage and chips the most expensive thing on the menu I was told that this is what I had asked for and that I couldn't send it back because I had already started eating. (in fact I had cut off a slice of sausage for my baby as she was hungry).
I then asked where the missing children's meal was. I was told I would just have to make up the third children's meal from the food from my plate!
I pointed out that I had paid for three children's meals and "the same" and that they hadn't given what I had paid for.
I was told the kitchen was now shut.
I then asked for a refund and was told 'certainly not'.
I then said I wanted to make a formal complaint and was told by the manageress that I could not.
I told her I was legally entitled to make a complaint and she was obliged to tell me the name of the owner.
She said she would not but that if I wanted to make a complaint she would pass it on.
I was then told that if I didn't stop complaining she would throw me out!
As it was late and the children were hungry I had no choice but to divide the food between the kids and ask for a doggy bag to take home the remainng sausages!
It was a horrible, if amusing, experience. The manageress is the rudest woman I have ever come across.

My family and I are on Holiday in Edale and had the misfortune to try this place for Sunday lunch on our first full day. I have two teenage children and an 18 month old baby. This is simply one of the worst pubs I have ever been in to. We went for Sunday lunch today. The tables where sticky and dirty. The staff delivered the wrong meals and could not understand english to a reasonable level. When the food did turn up it did all turn up at the same time. When I asked where my dinner was, the fish pie with Smash rather than potato, I was told they could only fit one in the microwave at the same time! After having already placed a 52 order I was refused a glass of tap water ! I asked if they had a tap and an empty glass and maybe I could do it. They just refused to serve it after being asked three times. I asked the manager and she refused as well.

If you are looking for a good pub for a nice meal do not go here.

Not a good experience. I went in with friends and ordered 35 of food and 10 drink and then asked for a glass of water. I was refused and the only reason the bar person could give me was that it was against policy. I have given up getting bothered about this so asked for a pint or cordial without the cordial (ie water which i would pay for). This was going to be around 1.50. A bit steep so i declined and sat down to enjoy my meal and beer.
When the food arrived a friend and i both had the wrong meal. I pointed this out to the waitress who appeared not to be able to speak and walked away with no acknowledgement.
A lady who i took to be the manageress appeared who apologised and offered to replace both meals. I declined and said i did not want to see these meals wasted. I asked for a glass of tap water as compensation. She declined and explained that it was against policy and could not explain further. At that point i gave up again. Now on our second drink we had spend around 55.
The meal which i finally ate was a chicken pie. Pie was OK, Chips OK and peas were overcooked and grey.
A disappointingly meal. Beer OK. Very unfriendly. Poor service on a number of counts and as we left another couple commented to me that they were voting with their feet.

We walked up to the nags head and found the staff and atmosphere far better. I will not be visiting the rambler again.

OK - firstly,I'm a genuine reviewer unrelated to the landlord (frankly leaving reviews for your own business will only harm your credibility and make you a bit of a laughing-stock).
I'd read the bad reviews but wanted to see for myself. The signs around the place said family- and walker-friendly. We were tired after a long day walking, but didn't experience any negativity about muddy boots or the fact that we had children with us. My family and I had drinks here (did not order food) and we found it to be a lovely place but a bit expensive (although no more so than, say, a Costa coffee bar). Hot and cold beverages were all very nice. The staff were friendly, and the atmosphere seemed really nice.
faithwolf - 28 Jul 2008 16:18
i have been going to the ramblers inn for years and this year was very disappointing the food was expensive it arrived cold and the chips raw my nieces food was cold and raw and she is aged 7, we tried to complain and wanted hot food, the manageress said we had been complaining all day, but we had arrived an hour earlier and we were asked to leave the premises by the back door, we did not get a refund for the cold meal and we will not be returning ever again the staff were rude and did not care about the customers.

Can the people who keep leaving false reviews about The Ramblers please stop it?.
Most people aren't stupid enough to listen to your adverts for the pub, because the adverts you keep putting on are way over the top.
I have travelled the length and breadth of the British Isles many times and have never come accross such badly managed, and over hiped pub in all my life.
Everything from food to accommodation is over priced.
The meal we had was terrible and as ive said before the only reason the pub can exist at all is because of the location.
The get consistently good reviews your pub has to be up to scratch, if it isn't it will keep getting bad reviews. A lot of work needs to be done at The Ramblers

Stayed with family for long weekend (two young children) in August 07 Food was excellent and value for money as was the rooms. When we arrived the Landlady informed us that staff did not go into our rooms unless requested and if we needed anything just to ask. We put this to the test the next day when our youngest was unwell (too much ice cream) and we needed the sheets changing. The staff came in changed the bedding and were still smiling and talking to the children when they left. All the staff were friendly and always had time for the children facilities were also child friendly, The Landlady always had something for the children to do games/pictures/activities when their father went out walking The children also really enjoyed the hens and the ducks in the Ramblers animal corner. The Landlord even allowed them to choose their own breakfast egg if they were awake when he collected them in the morning. Although there is no disabled access I need hip replacement and use sticks the staff were more that helpful and did not find it difficult. Highly recommended will be staying there again, (the children loved it and are still talking about the chickens). Ps Beds to die for wish I could have taken one home and you must try the Stake and ale Tankard

I had the misfortune to stay at the Rambler Country House. I booked my room in March a twin room no confirmation was sent, they only take Credit Card No.
I arived at 3pm and paid the manager 76-00 for one night I was shown to a double room, I explained this was no good as the room was for myself and my brother she told me they had no twin rooms left as they were all full, she then told me it was not her fault as the person that booked my room in the first place had now left there employment. She then explained they had one more double room that was available,I could have that, but I would have to pay for it,at this point I told her it was there clanger and I could not see any reason why I should pay. After 2 heated meetings she said they would put a camp bed in the double room, only compensation she gave me and my brother a free point in the evening, so as far as I am concerned you pays your money and takes your choice at 76 a night. You will not see me there again.

Has got consistently worse over the last 12 months or so - maybe a change of landlord, but as their name is no longer over the door it's hard to tell. Laughingly titled a "Country House" establishment ( they wish )it is the pits, rubbish beer, over-priced and pathetic food, ignorant bar staff ( one asked me, when ordering my 2nd pint, if i was driving as he couldn't let me buy another pint if so - which "ego planet" is he from, then ?? Driving or not driving ( I wasn't ) is NONE of his business )and too many signs demanding no walking on the carpet in walking boots, leave your rucksack outside etc.

Atrocious, simply atrocious

Great staff, with a hard to find - happy to help attitude. Amazing food, which is well presented and reasonably priced.

A great beer garden during the summer. Plastic pint pots but with the childs play area its to be expected nowadays.

A*

i took my disabled daughter to the blue john mines on saturday5th aug , and called into the rambler on the way home . the pub and grounds were clean ,tidy and spacious. the staff were very helpfull and considerate to our needs, the manager said he was sorry they didnt have a wheel chair ramp as it had been damaged in bad weather he helped me in and out of the pub with my daughter. i found the beer to be good and we both enjoyed our meal, so much so that we are booked into the hotel this coming bank holiday weekend, its nice to find somewhere a family and disabled person are made to feel welcome
sdlslf - 9 Aug 2006 18:24
Definitely NOT a country house hotel. Its a basic, commercial pub enterprise ie no local character at all. Beer range rather bland - just Grays brewery. Try the Nags head up the road - has to be better.
GrahamH - 17 Jul 2006 11:15
..and of course 'Anonymous' is completely impartial and devoid of any personal and professional interest in this place. Just thought I might bring a further clarity for the benefit of all our posters.
in4 - 16 Jul 2006 14:35
I have visited the ramblers many times in my life, and i have had no problems at all. The food has been spot on, as has the beer and especially the staff.

Will keep coming back until i have something to complain about
anonymous - 7 Jul 2006 23:36
Abysmal. Food order was wrong. Food was tasteless. Ordered sponge and custard and had to wait 20 mins for the custard, being offerd mustard instead by the numerous non English speaking staff. To add insult to injury we were thrown out when we were served a pint of flat cider and we had the audacity to complain. "Thats how it comes" was the remark of the Assistant Manager, despite having a perfectly decent pint of the same cider up at the Nags not an hour earlier!! Been going there for 20 yrs, won't be going again.
timjackson - 19 Jun 2006 13:57
I agree - boring and characterless and low on good service. I have had clients stay here from time to time when I run my courses from this area - and they have always complained about the poor service and cold rooms (in the winter).
billylegs - 10 Feb 2006 18:34
In my opinion it was the worst steak and kidney pie Ive ever had. The gravy in the pie looked like it was made from little bits of paper mache.
Mark2005 - 30 Jan 2006 17:27
Just average.
mothola - 20 Dec 2005 13:35
Against my instincts I paid a visit to the Rambler and wished I hadn't bothered.
It is a 'Pub by Numbers' and decorated with what seems to be a hotch potch of leftovers from Beefeater type places. Quite horrid.
The Barperson who served me was ignorant, ill mannered, unwelcoming and quite unprofessional. It was all simply too much bother for him.

Comine this with some very average Grays and Cornish cask and you'll appreciate why the Edale carpark is marginally more welcoming.

A great location for a great pub/gastropub sadly wasted.
in4 - 18 Nov 2005 16:37
After reading the comments about this pub and the similar ones regarding a place not too far away, I think I'll change my plans for doing the Kinder plateau. Its not so long ago when a cracking pint of Sam Smiths was to be had nearby and a good pint of 80 shilling in the Rambler too!

On a positive note it seems as if this site is doing a good job in flagging up the best and worst of pubs and giving customers an informed choice.

Having just spent the weekend at Edale in a pub "up the road"...there are only two in the village, you can't imagine my relief when we moved to The Ramblers after 2 days in miserable accomodation. The pub seemed busy during the day and the food was average. The accomodation at The Ramblers is average for the price BUT the hospitality was terrible. Some of the barmen were very nice and well mannered on all occasions. However, the major dissapointment came when dealing with the peeple who seemed to be running the place. When we reported a seemingly broken shower, we were greeted with "take a bath instead". With a gale blowing outside and a strict "leave the property at 10am" policy, we weren't even allowed to wait in the main hotel building and have a coffee after 10am whilst we waited for our train (which was in 40 mins) as they had to close up to do paperwork!!!! Hospitality extraordinaire. Either the dull weather makes them miserable, or they need to take a trip outside of the area for a while.

I went here a quite recetly and was also very disappointed by the rude staff and poor food. One of the comments below was obviously written by a member of the pub's staff and seems to sum up the general attitude of the place - we don't care that we waste our customers money, we don't care how dreadful our pub is, people will still come here because there's few places in Edale to stay otherwise.
Lou123 - 14 Oct 2005 16:53
brilliant pub to sit outside after a good walk,
great location, great beer except for the plastic pots.
hangarman2k - 8 Aug 2005 15:40
after visiting the rambler inn in edale i must say what a lovely time i had, the food was lovely and the staff were very helpfull and polite, our stay in the hotel is what you would expect with a family run establishment. The rooms were very clean and well looked after, the bars were very clean, all the staff were very nice to us and i must say to all the other customers that we met durring our 4 day stop. i do think that if i had a complaint i may have mentioned this to the managers at the time and not leave with the problem not sorted, maybe i just like to be honest and straight forward and no be a coward and leave with my tail between my legs
anonymous - 29 Jul 2005 19:13
its a shame that so many people like to complain about so much.
hundreds of people from all over the world come to visit and stay at the rambler, and the vast majority are pleased with the welcome from the staff, the rooms, and the food. as the name says it is a country house and not an innercity high class restraunt like some of the complainers are trying to compair it too.
they dont just cater to the needs of ramblers there are the family's with young children, the elderly, day trippers and sometimes pets.
you so called real ale drinkers should realise the plastic glasses outside policy is for the safety of all the customers and and to save you money
how much do you think vets bills are and do you really want to be sued because you break a glass and a child is hurt.
if you have comments or complaints why dont you bring it to the attention of the staff and stop whinging behind there backs
stop being so god dam selfish

The Ramblers is a very over priced Hotel pub,
the food is expensive and absolutely awful. How they charge the amount they do is beyond me. I'd heard it was'nt up to much, but when you are backpacking in Edale you hardly have any choice.
If the Ramblers had any competition it would sink like a lead brick.
history100 - 5 Jun 2005 20:51
Just returned from the Ramblers. We found the staff friendly and helpful and the food very much on a par with pub food. Room was clean and airy with good views of the surrounding countryside. We would consider staying there again if visiting Kinder Scout in the future. On the negative side, having to wait until 9 am for breakfast we found a little restrictive as we like to get out and about early!
Rick and Ann - 27 Oct 2004 19:20
Edale only has 2 pubs - our B&B landlady informed us that they were both owned by the same people. Therefore, it must be the lack of any real competition that makes them so poor. Overpriced, tasteless food and the expensive real ales were simply off - tasting more like a pint of Sarsons than a decent bitter. A real shame as Edale is the start of the Pennine Way and tired walkers deserve far better fare.
Eamonn - 22 Oct 2004 17:07
I stayed here recently and have never experienced such a lack of customer service. When we arrived we were told that everything we need to know about the 'Hotel' was on the back of our bedroom door. The note informed us that the restaurant was open until 9.30pm on Thursday evenings. We went down at 8pm only to be told by an extremely rude Manager that the kitchen was closed and they were only serving bar snacks, and only until 8.30pm. It was obvious how much they valued their guests by not informing them of this as they arrived. After an 8 hour walk in the Pennines the last thing I wanted to eat was a manky burger and chips. My vegetarian boyfriend had to eat cheese and beans on a soggy jacket potato. This was all slammed down in front of us although the Manager had bothered to let us sit in the closed restaurant after he'd found out we were guests. He'd told us to sit outside earlier and then stomped to our table when he realised we were 'guests' and barked at us to come inside, where we sat - still with our plastic glasses. He was also foul in the morning as we payed and quite clearly customers are an inconvenience to the staff here. It's also hugely over-priced - 72 a night for what is effectively a below average B&B - many things in our room weren't working to add insult to injury. The breakfast was rubbish too and accompanied by the kind of non-service we'd already come to expect from this place. Yes, the beer was nice but it's nice at The Old Nag's Head up the road which is a far superior pub with nice friendly staff. If only they had rooms!
Anna - 15 Sep 2004 13:01
Bar snacks over-priced and bland. Arrived far, far too quickly to have been freshly prepared.
For a 'walker friendly' pub, it was disappointing to find that half the pub had boots banned and that we had to decant our beer into plastic glasses to sit outside. Poor bar snacks, no atmosphere, clearly a pub that doesn't need to try too hard. BUT, excellent beer...
Seanie G - 15 Sep 2004 08:51
Doesn't seem like a village pub - considering it's in Edale you'd expect a "proper" boozer.

It's a pity....
