The Font and Firkin, Brighton

A perennially sad thing about coming to Brighton; one always ends up in the Font with vague recollections of when it (and Firkins in general) were good. Laterly just another loathsome chav hangout. The promise of live music is hardly uplifting either - on our last visit we had the one man rent-a-mod band exhorting audience bark-ticipation on the chorus of another turgid Oasis anthem... all of which highlights that British yoof culture has been crap for at least the last ten years.

Bright Star, Luton

Very appealing quaint English village pub, tucked away so thoroughly you might forget that its just a mile or so from the end of Luton Airport runway.
Friendly enough... though they made such a show of goodbyes whenever one of the locals left that the silence when my girlfriend and I departed was almost deafening.
Something must have told them we were from Luton. It was probably my scarf.

The Greyhound, Aldbury

As featured in The Avenger's episode 'Murdersville' (1967). Sit outside in the summer, and see where Mrs Peel was dunked in the village pond by the ne'er do well residents of 'Little Storping on the Swuff'.
Don't worry, Steed arrives just in time and they fight the baddies off, with custard pies, in the Museum of Torture.
The Museum, over the road from the pond, is now the Post Office... although they may still sell custard pies.

The Shakespeare Bar, Luton Airport

Pretty damned awful, but my drinking here is a prelude to our going on a weekend jolly somewhere (usually on Easyjet). Obviously best at an otherwise ungodly hour of the morning...

U Fleku, Prague

The beer makes it a 'must-visit' place - although its a terrible tourist trap... if its quiet and you can keep away from English/East German beer parties, and the tedious oopm-hah band, then you've done very well.

Becketts Irish Pub, Budapest

Endured this place to watch England play and, although I wasn't screeching at the telly like some of my Burberry bedecked baffoon countrymen, I felt embarrassed and guilty... and ripped off.

The Drunken Ship, Rome

I'm with Simon on this one. Appalling overpriced, and well worth a miss.

7 Feb 2005 13:07

The George, Harpenden

Harpenden's premier "lets drink up and leave" nightspot.

The Old Cock Inn, Harpenden

What happened to live football on a Sunday? It used to be quite pleasant. Live jazz in the courtyard in the summer was pretty cool too. Not so much going for it on a average Saturday night, and its a little bit far from the station...

The Old Sugar Loaf, Dunstable

The Sugar Lump is ok, not bad, alright. You tend to go there cause, honestly, there's nowhere better. The nooks and crannies of yore have gone, which has lost the old pub some of its character, but then they made the pub a pain in the arse for anyone over 5ft 3 in height.

22 Oct 2004 16:19

The Victoria, Dunstable

Definitely the best pub to go to, if you happen to be stuck in Dunny. Good beers, and a cosy bar which can get packed... there is a games room round the back but, in almost absolute contrast to the bar, its big and cold and lifeless.

22 Oct 2004 16:05

The Inn on the Green, Harpenden

Drop the kids off at this handily situated creche before heading out for a night in one of the town's grown up pubs.

24 Sep 2004 13:42

Park, Luton

'orrible town pub full of students and noise. Vast, contrived, cold and soulless... but the burger'n'beer deals aren't bad.

24 Sep 2004 13:31

The King William IV, Cockernhoe

Half decent for a summers walk from the Wigmore area of Luton. Looks like a quaint little country pub from the outside, but is often wedged with (well meaning but noisy) locals by the bar. Away from the bar is a huge, largely deserted, area for pool players (there aren't many) and diners. Karaoke on a Sunday is well worth avoiding.

24 Sep 2004 13:28

The Brache, Luton

Is this the Vauxhall Brache or the Brache Beefeater? Either bar is deadly dull - you'd be much better off catching the train at Airport Parkway and getting off at the next stop to visit The Bricklayers Arms (Luton) or the Harpenden Arms.

The Horn, St Albans

Great little venue - the pubs rubbish mind.

16 Sep 2004 13:04

Cock, St Albans

Donovan did his first gig here apparently. Not sure how much its changed since the 60's, the Hogshead over the road always seemed more appealing.

16 Sep 2004 13:03

The Good Mixer, Camden

My brother knows a bloke who sold his Dad's car coat to Graham Coxon in the Mixer years ago. The place is steeped in Britcrock, the question when drinking in here tends to be "why the fu..?" The answer is that its a decent little pub for a pint before making ones way to the latest disappointing Fall gig.

The Bull and Gate, Kentish Town

Bless the summer of '88!
A dingy hole of a pub/venue - you gotta love it.
Not a terrible chippy next door either.

15 Sep 2004 16:52

Billy's Wine Bar, Harpenden

Harpenden's elite? Please.
Still, this bar tends to be packed full of those suffering under the delusion of North Herts chic.
Barely tolerable at best.

15 Sep 2004 16:48

The Green Man, Great Offley

Wasps? OK.
We're from Luton and visit Offley from some balmy midsummer afternoon posh. Ale grand. Food good too, but too expensive for me outside the remit of company expenses.

15 Sep 2004 16:40

The Harpenden Arms, Harpenden

Great pub for ESB and Thai food. Should easily be the best pub in town, the regular clientele are civilised enough, however there remains a wearisome tendency for the pub to be overrun by large groups of anti-social blokes; the likes of whom would not be tolerated in comparable establishments.

15 Sep 2004 16:23

The Euston Flyer, Euston

Not a brilliant pub, but good for a pint of ESB before the train comes. Worth avoiding when football fans travelling North have the same idea - but need to get laddish while they're at it.

15 Sep 2004 15:59

Sow and Pigs, Toddington

Has been in every Good Beer Guide. Its a great place. Intimate, quirky, fantastic beer and a legendary manager - Roger. Fantastically friendly fella... just don't let him get started on the piano.

15 Sep 2004 15:54

The White House, Luton

There's a perpetual twilight inside this huge pub, and a continuous low hum which can make you feel like you're within the bowels of a spaceship rather than a multiplex system. Wedged at the weekend, more relaxed in the week (but traditionally understaffed at all times) and busy with hardened old drinkers and students in the day. Food is functionary Wetherspoons stodge, though I recommend the restaurants on Wellington Street rather than the risible fayre on offer on JD's Curry Nights. That said, the ale has improved significantly of late.

15 Sep 2004 15:44

The Smugglers, Brighton

Good bar billiards table. Decor charming, in a kitsch kind of way, I suppose. Otherwise its a bit of a dive - especially when the pool room/level is full of the ubiquitous Brighton stag party.

15 Sep 2004 15:30

Brookes, Luton

Posters, advertising the late opening of this town centre bar, invite revellers to join the Brannigans 'Mile High Club' - whatever the heck thats meant to mean. Somewhere to avoid on Friday/Saturday nights (as is pretty much all of Luton town centre). However, its really not that bad a place in the daytime - nicely refurbished recently, good (if overpriced) pool room and Pedigree on tap (and ridiculously cold).

15 Sep 2004 15:21

The Fighting Cocks, St Albans

Reputedly the oldest estate pub in the UK. I once fell ridiculously in love with a beautiful girl from St Albans - we'd take romantic strolls in the Abbey grounds, often ending up at the Cocks. Wonderful times... she dumped me after about six weeks.
