The Hobgoblin, Loughborough

I had the same thing happen to me- what's the point of a Hobgoblin pub if there's no Hobgoblin to drink?! Apparently, this is quite common.

The focus seems to be on sport in this pub, not real ale!

Santa Fe, Reading

It's not too bad. I agree that the bar does get filled with posers very quickly. Cocktails are nice, but all is overpriced.

As for the food, this is the place to go if you have any food allergy at all. One of my friends has a nut allergy and nowhere else seems to be able to cater for him.

Our waiter in this restaurant went to great lengths to check the ingredients and ensure that there were no unfortunate incidents! Which is more than can be said for several other places along the riverside!

Sweeney and Todd, Reading

I agree with whats already been said: the pies are good, the bar prices are not so good. But having said that, they aren't that much more overpriced than some of the other bars at some other restaurants in Reading.

Certainly, when my family went in, we left thinking that we'd spent a very cheap evening having a great meal, that was reasonably good value.

Definitely worth a visit.

The Lyceum, Strand

I have loved this pub ever since I first went into it. Considering it's location, it's really cheap and very friendly.

Go here instead of the Coal Hole, it's heaps better.

The Knights Templar, Chancery Lane

This is a great pub for taking people not from the area too. The toilets are legendary.

Great interpretation of the Wetherspoons formula. Seriously good for beer, but something for everyone.

It is beginning to show it's age a little round the edges, but the atmosphere makes up for it. Did I mention the loos?! It deserves a 10 for those alone!

The Butcher's Hook and Cleaver, Smithfield

Now this place, is a real pub.

I have very many fond memories of this bar, and the function room is lovely and highly recommended.

Only possible criticisms is wait for service, as previously noted.

The Back of Beyond, Reading

Nice pub, but occasionally long wit for food.

Now has a music licence (yes, I know- in a Wetherspoons!), mostly background jazz.

Chilled out.

The College Arms, Reading

Lack of seating, but a nice pub with welcoming staff. Food could do with improvement, however!

The Coal Hole, Strand

My visit to this bar was eventful. Sadly not in a good way.

The toilets were disgusting. One of the ladies had blocked up on flooding, there was water all over the floor, no toilet roll or soap and the had dryer didn't work.

On attempting to have a quiet word with one of the staff and tell them about the flood, I was cornered by a woman I presume was the landlady and screamed at for "being rude to her staff". Given the fact she was the only rude one, I found that insulting. She then attempted to insinuate I hadn't bought a drink (I suspect this was because I had a rucksack) and was quite offensive.

I'm not the only customer she must have lost that day as a result of such behaviour. For the record, I had bought several drinks for myself and friends, and the beer tasted watery and was over-priced.

There are nicer pubs in London, by a long way. The Coal Hole is an appropriate name. Avoid if at all possible.
