The Griffin, Caversham

Visited for Christmas lunch with a party of >30. Exceptionally efficient and friendly service. Good beer too.

The Coach and Horses, Rotherwick

NIce pub- in November on a cold day there was a log fire at lunchtime- cosy! Very friendly. Beer OK. Bar snack fine esp. chips. Musroom omlette was rubbery and mushrooms not freshly cooked so take care selecting meals. Worth another try.

Baron Cadogan, Caversham

Reliable beer (yes, guest beers are IMHO always good). Busy, friendly too. Our preferred local

Nags Head, Reading

Visited 4 November with friends. Absolutely wonderful place. Great beer, swift and friendly service and the only negative thing was the noise- understandable since the place was packed. Best pub for miles.

Fox and Hounds, Caversham

My wife and I visited recently having read a really good write up in local CAMRA mag. Large Sky Sports banner outside seemed (to us offputting), inside pub was clean and a little soul-less. There was no sign of the local Two Bridges ale which is why we'd come. Maybe we'll try again in a while. In the meantime even Whetherspoon has as good ambience and beer.

The Mole, Monk Sherborne

Pub now appears to be closed.

The Rising Sun, Highmoor

This was always a pleasant country pub. We hear it changed hands about 3 months ago and it seems better than ever. We visited at lunchtime midweek. Good Brakspear's bitter and a vast array of bar snacks and tapas. There's a restaurant too which we haven't tried. Service is friendly and the situation- rural, quiet, great garden is near perfect. Only tricky thing might be *finding* the pub. Worth the effort!

The Bull, Stanford Dingley

It appeared open when we passed on Sunday, but the phone number in the BT book 0118 974 4582 just has anonymous answer message. I'll go there mid week and check.

The Bolton Arms, Old Basing

We visited as a group of five on a Wednesday lunchtime. The pub looks a bit upmarket and we expected stuffy service etc. No so. The beer was good (3.30/pint), the sandwiches were moderately priced (for Hants.!) and the service could not have been more friendly. We'll try it again. Maybe we'll get to meet the landlord mentioned in other comments..

The Coach and Horses, Rotherwick

Pub was closed Wednesday lunchtime. Chairs on tables and no sign on the door suggests something more permanent.

The Old House at Home, Newnham

The pub looked very closed at lunchtime on Wednesday. Not so. However a quick look at the menu (sandwich 7.95 or 13.95) and the total lack of ambiance was enough to send us up the road to OId Basing. Can't imagine how they stay open.

The Plough, Little London

Visited at lunchtime midweek. What a wonderful place this is. There are normally two pulled beers and two guest beers on gravity. Today's were in good condition as usual. Food is basic- baguettes which are excellent value. Atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. What more could one want?

The Greyhound, Eton WIck

June 2010. It's still a great little pub. Welcoming and cosy. We have always found the beer well kept.

The Hoddington Arms, Upton Grey

Mid July 2010, the pub appears to be closed up. It is said to be reopening with new management.

The White Hart, Sherfield on Loddon

Visited on a mid-week lunchtime. The Youngs bitter was great yet the pub felt rather sterile. Very chain-pub, not welcoming and little atmosphere.

The Happy Man, Englefield Green

Really excellent real pub. Good selection of beers and reasonably priced food. Friendly too.

The Prince Albert, Frieth

Friendly, unspoilt pub. Good Brakspear's ale. Worth a visit

The Bell Inn, Aldworth

Unspoilt, friendly, excellent beer. Who could ask for more? Food (mostly rolls) is simple and good quality. IMHO the finest pub in the country.

The White Hart, Charter Alley

Excellent choice of ales and even a draught cider. Maggs mild was really good. Other West Berkshire beers there too. Well worth visiting for the beer. Food (on a Sunday) seemed disappointing and expensive- pity.

The Downgate, Hungerford

Visited on a Sunday in October 08. What a super place. The Arkells 2B and 3B both excellent, friendly bar staff and nibbles in the bar - the first time I've seen this in 20 years!

The Cedars, Binsted

Nice pub. Much improved recently. Good beer and friendly service. Good value food too.

The Sun, Whitchurch Hill

Visited on a Sunday just before 2pm and the pub looked very empty and lifeless. The pub was closing at 4pm for a private function (relevant?). After serving our drinks we were told "There's no food". This despite the fact that it was within their posted food time. "how about a sandwich?". We were refused even that. We thought the service was cold and unfriendly. We will not be back. Pity because the Brakspears bitter was good.

The Butler, Reading

What a shame. I took some beer loving relatives visiting from the USA last week. The beer was flat and possibly the worst London Pride I've tasted. The pub seemed rather dead too. I have fond memories of great beer here. Other recent reviews seem OK so maybe a bad night?

The Swan Inn, Inkpen

Friendly pub with good Butts beer.
The food however is expensive and not well served.
My fishcake (10.95) came with soggy saute potatoes (two tiny halves)and I had to wait five minutes for a tiny portion of microwaves veg.
By all means drink here- that's good, but forget the food.
