The Hartley, Bermondsey

Pub needs to learn to pay it's staff.. 8 weeks with no pay is a disgrace.. we will be boycotting this bar until it starts treating it's minimum waged staff properly!!

The Union Inn, Levenshulme

Nice reasonably friendly pub. Beer is well kept and at a nice price during the afternoon.

Hartley's Emporium, Wigan

Homophobic type abuse seems tolerated by management and staff. I witnessed a smartly dressed woman being abused verbally and loudly by a group of drunken middle aged men who were accusing her of being "it's a man" and "bloody tranny"as she tried to have a quiet coffee. Nothing was said by the management and she was forced to leave after enduring it for at least 20 minutes. I won't be calling in again if the management and staff think this kind of behaviour is acceptable from their customers..

The Swan Inn, Liverpool

Called over on Saturday. Still the same old Swan.. good selection of REAL beer and amazing prices. Phoenix Hopsack for 1.90.. (prefer Arizona.. but beggars can't be choosers) Even the bouncers are nice guys. Any complaint??.. all the stairs to the toilets are a little awkward after 5 or 6 pints, but I guess theres not much they can do about that.
9/10

The Roebuck, Leek

What can be expected when it's run by the same ass who runs the Cattle Market and allowed his daughter (with bribery of the brewery I may add) to destroy the White Lion..
Would rather have a coffee from Chris Buttie than a pint in here...

The Salisbury, Manchester

Cracking pub.. A friend was the DJ for years before setting off for the med.. The door staff remembere me after 5 years, which is so very nice as they were under orders to let no more in.. Cheers lads.. it was nice to get out of the rain and into Manchesters most convenient and probably best pub.

The Lass O'Gowrie, Manchester

Always been a great pub.. good selection of well kept beers.. warm and friendly. I also was asked (more like demanded) to remove myself from a bar stool by some red nosed old ass.. who got firstly a lesson in manners (please goes a long way) and then told where to shove it.. hahaha. I'm from Wigan.. I will sit on a stool if theres one vacant. Imagine the arrogance.. asking a lady to get off "my seat" The nice guy behind the bar agreed and told the old fool to leave or he wouldn't be responsible if I decided to wallop the rude old idiot (turned his back so I could if I wanted)
Enough said.. I like The Lass.. have been going in there for over 20 years. Always a breath of fresh air in an otherwise rather bleak city. I make a point of dropping in for a pint, and I always take visitors to the city in for a pie and a pint.

The Gullivers, Manchester

Rather dodgy on a Saturday night.. only went in because it's impossible to get smokes in the centre of Manchester without a search. (offy on Oldham St)
Incredible place.. heaving with people all having a wild time. A quick half as an excuse to use the loo then escape back to the safety of the Salisbury.
Looks like it could be fun if you like that kind of thing, but too crowded and noisy for my tastes these days. Also got the distinct feeling that more than one drink could be dangerous.

The English Lounge, Manchester

Used to love this place when it was the Hogs.. last visit in July.. disappointing.

2 Oct 2009 01:03

The Ducie Bridge, Manchester

Surprisingly friendly and welcoming city pub. Crowded on a Friday night but staff helpful and beer was nice and fresh.

2 Oct 2009 01:01

The Man and Scythe Inn, Bolton

Please don't drink that Thatchers.. a quick talk to "Shakey John" will convince you of the undoubted benefits to your health of avoiding the orange poison.
Always fun, but I preferred it before it was "modernised" a long while back.

2 Oct 2009 00:54

The New Globe, Bolton

How to ruin what used to be a great locals pub. "new globe" same old drug dealing pikey scum that got that hole closed down..
What a real shame. This pub was the only saving grace of living in the (now demolished) flats.

2 Oct 2009 00:52

The Bowling Green, Bolton

Only place I have ever had a knife pulled on me.. strewth!

2 Oct 2009 00:49

The Sharman Arms, Halliwell

Town pub in a run down area. That said it's always been fine with clean glasses and well kept beer.

2 Oct 2009 00:41

Bob's Smithy, Montserrat

Last 3 occasions it was closed well into drinking hours. You would think a Saturday afternoon about 4 on a hot day they would be doing a roaring trade. At least 10 other thirsty people arrived to a locked door as I waited for the bus to come.

2 Oct 2009 00:33

The Sweet Green Tavern, Bolton

I got spiked in here.. watch your glass at all times.

2 Oct 2009 00:30

Spinning Mule, Bolton

Cold.. unfriendly.. cursory service and how the hell do you spoil Fosters?

2 Oct 2009 00:28

The Founders Arms, Bolton

Gods teeth.. take a weapon ;)

2 Oct 2009 00:25

The Dog and Partridge, Bolton

One of my favourites.. Must go again to see if it's as it was.

2 Oct 2009 00:25

The Cattle Market Hotel, Bolton

This used to be my local at one time. Last visit about 3 years ago.. still much the same as it always was. Never recovered from the replacement of the Bolton home fans by an assortment of students and prostitutes.

2 Oct 2009 00:23

The Two Tubs Inn, Bury

I like Warstarter.. it's nice to get a good pint of real German beer in Bury.
I have been going in on and off for 25 years and it was a pleasant surprise to find this decent pub is not only surviving but doing well. Only get to go over one Friday in 6, but it's always a pleasure to see a friendly face after 2 hours on the trams and trains.

2 Oct 2009 00:19

The Bluebell, Bury

Tiny pub. I always liked playing there to the bemused locals who seemed puzzled how a band could even fit an a bar that size :)
Next time I'm in town I will call up.. that is if they open in the afternoon.

2 Oct 2009 00:11

Swan and Railway, Wigan

No... just no.. not nice.. not friendly.. just a no place. Avoid.

2 Oct 2009 00:07

Tudor House Hotel, Wigan

Odd dark pub. I felt very intimidated in here so I didn't hang about to find out why I felt nervous.

2 Oct 2009 00:06

The Tavern, Wigan

Closed as a pub.. now just an evening music venue.

2 Oct 2009 00:04

The Royal Oak, Wigan

Along with The Anvil and Hartleys this is the last of the top 3 Wigan hostelries. A real must on any visitors list. Local live music on various nights and always a friendly welcome. My usual travels are Anvil, Hartleys, then Oak for a good evening.. with an occasional stop across the road if the Oak is late opening for some reason...

2 Oct 2009 00:04

The Raven Hotel, Wigan

I liked the Raven before it was done up.. a proper old town pub. Now it's just another soulless chav haunt with the usual Wigan thugs.

2 Oct 2009 00:00

Moon Under Water, Wigan

Friendly Spoons.. good selection of beers but getting through the obnoxious smokers crowding the doorways can be a pain.
Downstairs has too many bandits with the usual "professionals" with bags of coins.. Food is good though I agree with the other comments that as it's very busy service can be slow. Seems to have a lot of passing trade changing trains who have been frightened out of every other pub on the way up the hill.

1 Oct 2009 23:58

John Bull Chophouse, Wigan

Haven't been in for 10 years.. what went wrong? .. offered illegal substances by a "friend" of the bloke on the bar. This used to be a nice pub with a great atmosphere.. sadly no more.

1 Oct 2009 23:54

The Last Orders, Wigan

Typical of the chain.. watery cut price all day drinking means lots of pikeys and chavs. There are worse places in Wigan.. most of them on the same street. It's one saving grace is it's right next to the post office.. which means Thursday it's giro day in personal issue land.. NO!.. I don't want to buy any batteries.. or razor blades.. or a phone I saw you steal out of that blokes coat pocket 2 minutes ago...

1 Oct 2009 23:51

Hartley's Emporium, Wigan

My local .. new management and a new atmosphere. The run down air has gone with the new food menu (at last) and an overall welcoming and friendly pub. Karaoke at the weekends and excellent beers. Usually a guest though they say they want to increase the selection. Be impressed.. along with the Oak this is a quality pub these days.

1 Oct 2009 23:48

The Griffin Hotel, Wigan

Was wary but it's OK .. friendly staff and from what I remember the beer was nice. It's another of those large empty spaces Wigan pubs which hasn't suffered from being done up too much.. makes the interior rather empty and cold, but it's fun. As you can see the Royal Oak from the front window it's always worth a visit while waiting for the Oak to open at 3.

1 Oct 2009 23:45

Brunels Hotel and Bar, Wigan

More pikeys than last orders.. that's an achievement.

1 Oct 2009 23:43

The Boulevard, Wigan

A pub where the management don't understand the sex discrimination act. AND the toilets are a complete disgrace.

1 Oct 2009 23:42

Anvil, Wigan

Not keen on Allgates.. always tastes like bog cleaner to me.. that said the Anvil is one of the few pubs in Wigan worth the name. No chavs and no idiots.
As one of the few female lone drinkers it's a little intimidating with all the middle aged blokes, but they are generally a friendly bunch and watch their horse racing and leave you to yourself.
Clean and tidy, but a little "bright" for a real ale pub.

1 Oct 2009 23:39

Prince Of Wales, Leek

Friendly family run pub.. nice beer. Hope the range has improved since the long awaited refurb. Always enjoyed a quiet afternoon pint here where it was nice to talk to the hounds and generally be alone.

1 Oct 2009 23:34

Fountain Inn, Leek

Is this one still open?

Paula from the White Lion :)

1 Oct 2009 23:32

The Wilkes Head, Leek

Landlord could do with learning to smile.. but he's from Yorkshire and perhaps it's an act? Beer always good but no atmosphere apart from winding up said misery guts *grins*
Nice big garden at the back.. nice facility.. Overall one of the pubs to visit along with the Bull 8/10

1 Oct 2009 23:30

Robin Hood Hotel, Ashton In Makerfield

Knuckle draggers and drunks looking for a fight.. Avoid.. go up to the Pres instead ;)

1 Oct 2009 23:26

The Bay Horse, Ashton In Makerfield

Directors on draught.. not bad.. also reasonably priced food which looks nice though I haven't ever had any.
Been tarted up fairly recently so I will have to dare a walk to the other side of the gauntlet of the town centre to check it out soon.

Another of those places which fronts a Holiday Inn type place.

1 Oct 2009 23:25

Sir Thomas Gerard, Ashton In Makerfield

Not a bad spoons.. food always acceptable.. beer can be variable. One of the few "safe" places for a quiet drink in a town full of knuckle dragging neanderthals.

1 Oct 2009 23:23

New Penny Farthing, Liverpool

One of my haunts. Regardless of the tatty run down air and the drunks on the floor outside, this pub is an experience everybody should have... maybe just once!!
Last time I was in there was cup final Saturday. The customers are friendly despite losing the match and the bar staff are pleasant. A real rough city pub with an atmosphere of "who cares as long as you are drinking something"... These places are becoming few and far between. Is that a relief.. or a loss to weekend daytime drinkers who like a bit of "character" to a pub and it's clientelle. I guess lots of people would be intimidated by a pub full of drunk scousers.. not me. I love the madness of the place.
