Great food here, and reasonable choice of beer. It's a cut above most Chef & Brewer pubs I've been to, but it still has more of a restaurant than a pub feel. As it's the only pub in the village, this may change during evening or the weekends.

I have IMG1975. It's been tarted up a bit, as Charles Wells is wont to do as of late. The decor is smarter and ambience improved, but the pub has certainly lost some of its haecceity. Good food, good beer (Eagle and Directors), good place for a pint or two, or to take the family out for a meal.
Not one to make a special trip for necessarily, but if you're in the area there ain't much else, and it does the job nicely.
23 Nov 2012 18:45
Beer quality Ok but not great. The largest collection of old men I've ever seen.
21 Nov 2012 18:39
It's OK, nothing terribly special though I'm afraid. Beer was a little warm for my liking.
21 Nov 2012 18:39
Has GK 1799 in here. Tasty pint of a tricky beer. Would certainly come here again.
16 Nov 2012 14:37
Everards pub on the London Road. Real local's pub feel, but friendly and with good beer (Beacon and Tiger when I was in). You may want to ask for the sparklers to be turned off though.
The entertainment can be a bit dodgy but that's part of the charm.
16 Nov 2012 14:24
Good music pub in Southampton. Surprisingly well-kept beer. A happy accident that I popped in here.
16 Nov 2012 14:22
Different sort of place than normal for me. Good vibe, but at 40 I felt too old. Nice beer, kitsch cocktails and great choice of music.
16 Nov 2012 14:21
Good pub, has Budvar Yeast which was tasty. A good choice if in the Jewellry Quarter.
16 Nov 2012 14:19
Not a great place, beer was OK but nothing to write home about. Beautiful interior but could use a tiny bit of sprucing up.
16 Nov 2012 14:17
Typical Wetherspoons, nicer on the inside than the outside!! Managed matchday queue quite well.
15 Oct 2012 16:57
Great place - very few boozers around Central London are anywhere near this good. Poorly kept secret though, can get very crowded.
20 Sep 2012 14:10
Pleasant, beer OK, I would visit again. This area is spoiled for good pubs though so this may not be first on my list.
30 Aug 2012 14:59
The very definition of 'meh'. I do wish I liked this place more than I do.
30 Aug 2012 14:58
I liked this place, beer very good. Definitely cramped but worth a visit.
30 Aug 2012 14:57
Old-fashioned drinking pub. Not too many like this one anymore. Good beer, friendly clientele.
20 Aug 2012 10:53
Nice enough place, Eagle a bit cold but certainly drinkable. Sky Sports here.
20 Aug 2012 10:52
Love this place. A well-kept secret near the Market. When I was last in there were three beers from Cornish brewery Wooden Hand.
16 Aug 2012 16:17
The Park Pub and Kitchen, Bedford
A bit more restaurant-y for my liking, but plenty of clienele enjoying a drink as well. Beer is good, and the decor is tasteful (although we sat outside in the beautiful weather).
7 Aug 2012 12:29
The White Horse, Stony Stratford
Cracking little pub. Dark and old-fashioned but very friendly. Beer's quite good as well.
19 Jul 2012 15:07
Further to my last review, this pub appears go have gone to pub heaven (hell?).
Now reopened as the Inn on the Lake. Not been yet but sounds like it's had a full refurb. There's hope yet...
11 Jun 2012 14:41
The Victoria Inn, Milton Keynes
Nice place as always. Beer a bit cold for my liking, but other than that I can't complain.
11 Jun 2012 14:36
Surprised by this pub. Best beer I've ever had from a Charlie Wells pub (& I live in Bedford!) Two guests on, one from Brodie's.
11 Jun 2012 14:35
The Countryman, Bradwell Common
Not a bad pub but the beer was poor quality I am afraid.
11 Jun 2012 14:33
The prices are staggeringly high and the beer range is limited, true. However the Fox and Hounds serves a fantastic pint of Bombardier - something you don't find very often even in Bedfordshire! - and the food is very good indeed. Excellent place for a special occasion I would imagine, or to have a couple of pints and relax.
31 May 2012 18:38
Good beer and I would say definitely GBG material. Young's Bitter, Tring Joack o'Legs and I think Bombardier. So typical Charlie Wells, but very good quality.
21 May 2012 16:54
Good beer, friendly place. Seems food oriented but full of drinkers when I popped in on a Wednesday afternoon.
21 May 2012 16:13
Cracking boozer this. Attached to a Chinese restaurant and a proper pub through and through. Very good real ale and conversation. Worth a visit if you've never been!
8 May 2012 12:09
This pub is actually in the town of Matlock, but listed as the town of 'Crown Square' (I have pointed this out to admin).
Surprisingly good beer for a JDW, and nice food. A bit grubby though.
26 Mar 2012 13:25
Good beer. A bit insular in the evening - a local pub for local people...
The food was excellent although overpriced (good luck finding somewhere in this part of the Peak District that served reasonably priced food...)
26 Mar 2012 13:23
Maybe I'm biased against the knotweed-like creeping of Greene King as far as the Peak District, but I just didn't warm to this pub at all.
26 Mar 2012 13:21
RedRoosterRocker, you and I are of the same mind.
3.90 a pint now (thanks Mr Osborne) for a 5.0% beer. My Old Growler was warmer than I like my coffee.
26 Mar 2012 13:18
Cracking pub, loads of ales in great condition. Lovely atmosphere, knowledgable bar staff. Big white pub cat.
26 Mar 2012 13:16
Typical Wetherspoon's, good place to meet pre- and post-match. Can't complain.
27 Feb 2012 10:58
Not a bad place by any means, but I'd say that it comes at least fifth in Ampthill, after the Albion, Old Sun, Queen's Head and E&T - no fault of the POW mind, it's just that Ampthill is particularly blessed with fine hostelries. Beer isn't bad (Eagle and Bombardier).
23 Jan 2012 17:32
Very restaurant-y pub, a bit precious (the staff referred to 'chipped potatoes'). Having said this, the food was very good. Also the beer is absolutely spot-on, and not eveyone was dining so may be a pleasant place to go for a drink or two.
9 Jan 2012 10:31
Great beer selection and quality. Seven Itchen Valley beers on when I was there last, plus a mini-festival of interesting and well-kept ales. The atmosphere is fantastic and the pub is right across from St Denys station.
1 Dec 2011 13:49
Absolute blinder of a drinking establishment. Best post-match venue.
1 Dec 2011 13:44
Very good pub. Beer is absolutely spot on. Hard to get to unless you're driving though!
1 Dec 2011 13:42
Nice place. Stopped in for a quick half when I missed the bus, a pleasant surprise!
11 Oct 2011 10:25
I found this place OK, typical Wetherspoons. Good selection of beer but not in the best condition.
11 Oct 2011 10:24
Excellent place. The brewery (Moonstone) is fantastic. 2.00 a pint!
11 Oct 2011 10:22
Nice pub, OK beer. Nothing terribly special but very close to the train station if you want to sneak a pint while waiting for a connection.
11 Oct 2011 10:21
Very modern pub which has an amazing range of real ale. I think I counted 14 on tap, wish I could have tried them all. Perfect temperature and condition.
1 Sep 2011 15:20
The Rutland and Derby, Leicester
Meh. Cold beer, cold atmosphere. Beer available in thirds though, which is nice if you want to work your way through the Everards range.
1 Sep 2011 15:18
I loved this pub. It reminded me of the sort of place one's Grandad would've frequented. A nice change from some of the colder atmosphere's found in the city centre.
1 Sep 2011 15:17
Enjoyed a pint in here before the Leicester v Saints match, supporters of both teams coexisting if not mingling. I'd recommend this pub for pre-match drinking, good atmpsophere & a wide range of real ale.
1 Sep 2011 15:15
Great pub. Only pub in the UK I've found to stock rye whiskey.
Real ale was not the best in the city but still pretty good. Also an astonishing range of bottled beers (espeaclly from the Baltic States and Russia - answers on a postcard please).
1 Sep 2011 15:13
Nice, friendly village pub. Restored my faith in Greene King beers.
Concerning hatter90's review, I would agree this pub is very expensive, at about 30p more per pint that surrounding areas. However I've never been one to quibble about the odd price for a night out (although I'd be out of pocket were this my local)!
1 Sep 2011 15:06
As good as it gets. Love this place, great beer and conversation.
1 Aug 2011 09:05
Not a bad pub, just not a great one. Shame as no others nearby, they could make a real go of this.
28 Jul 2011 12:04
The Quaker Coffee House, Darlington
Goos pub in Darlington, 9 real ales on when I was here. Didn't get a chance to try them all!
26 Jul 2011 12:42
One of the best pints of my life here. Beer is exactly as is should be.
The Wetherspoon/wine bar atmosphere may not have been to my liking, but I'd go anywhere to drink beer this good.
26 Jul 2011 12:40
I have to disagree with previous posters. I had a few beers here which ranged from acceptable to unpalatable. Below average pub serving below average beer for below average clientele.
26 Jul 2011 12:36
The beer I had was exceedingly warm, too warm to enjoy. From the other comments I am guessing this is not normally the case. Thought the atmosphere was OK.
26 Jul 2011 12:34
As usual with Sam Smith pubs, the atmosphere is pleasant & the beer is about half the price of elsewhere in town at 1.54 per pint. The downside is the choice of ale - Sam Smith OBB only. Now, I like this beer, but it isn't one I'd wish to drink all night.
26 Jul 2011 12:31
Basic pub with football and good beer. Northallerton may have more to offer but this is certainly worth going to if you're on your way to or from the railway station.
26 Jul 2011 12:28
The Duke of Wellington, Newcastle
Very friendly pub, beer maybe not the best but nothing to complain about either.
26 Jul 2011 12:26
The Railway Tavern, Darlington
I really took to this pub. Unassuming, friendly, good beer (Including a 6% from Maxim which was perfect). Seemed to have that special something over the sum of its parts, the indefinable quality of a successful and well-loved pub. This will be my first call when next in Darlington.
26 Jul 2011 12:23
Tickle Toby Inn, Northallerton
I like this one! Had lunch and some locally brewed beer (Wall's County Summer Gold). Definitely worth a visit, gets lively but not overly busy on market day.
26 Jul 2011 12:21
Nice place. Most (if not all) of the beers were 4.3% and above, including a couople of >5% on offer. Thought the ale was quite good (I had one from the stageeringly excellent Maxim Brewery).
26 Jul 2011 12:19
The Shakespeare Tavern, Durham
A good pub, enjoyable time to be had here. The beer is a bit cold and the interior could do with a lick of paint. But that's being picky.
26 Jul 2011 12:16
Lovely old pub, great beer served very well. On CAMRA's Heritage Pub list. Can get very busy, but it isn't hard to see why.
26 Jul 2011 12:14
Good real ale pub not too far from the town centre. An enjoyable place. You're spoiled for choice in Darlington but this is a good place to try.
26 Jul 2011 12:11
Number 22 Alehouse and Canteen, Darlington
Very nice pub, excellent beer. A victim of its own success however as it was vastly overcrowded on a Saturday night.
26 Jul 2011 12:09
Excellent place. Absolutely loved it. The gramophone was class. Beer was wonderful!
You probably won't find this place unless you are looking for it!
26 Jul 2011 12:07
One of the best pubs I've ever had the pleasure to visit. Beer is fantastic. Excellent range of proper cider and perry. Good atmosphere, some beers are pricier than others but you can drink for 2.20. It doesn't really get any better than this.
17 Jun 2011 09:37
This is a very special pub. I do not mean this in a good way.
25 May 2011 17:23
Secklow Hundred, Milton Keynes
Least favourite of the city centre Spoons pubs. Limited real ale selection, and half the time it's not in great condition. The clientele often leaves something to be desired. Try the Wetherspoons across the street instead.
25 May 2011 17:21
The best of MK city centre Wetherspoons. I've never had a bad pint in here, although they are usually a trifle cold a la Spoons up and down the country.
25 May 2011 17:20
Very nice, friendly pub with excellent beer. Really lovely time to be had here.
23 May 2011 11:59
Not as bad as a lot of the reviews I have read. It is indeed overprices but you'er in Herts!
Limited and not very inspiring real ale choice but in very good nick, which is all you can ask.
17 May 2011 17:02
A great pub which is a bit on the pricey side but worth it when you taste the ales. If 20p extra on the pint puts you off then maybe you should go for quality instead of quantity!!
17 May 2011 16:57
Always been a nice place, but the beer has in the past been lacking in quality. From my last few visits this is no longer the case. Wells Eage IPA, Courage Directors and occasionally Bombardier in great condition. Hopefully this pub has a great future ahead of it as it is finally living up to its potential.
17 May 2011 16:53
Nice pub. Beer lovely. The food is fairly expensive for what you get, but then again this is MK.
15 Mar 2011 16:10
Meh. Full marks for trying. Disadvantaged by the selection of great pubs in Nottingham.
11 Feb 2011 16:43
The Vat and Fiddle, Nottingham
One of the top 5 pubs I have ever visited. Full range of Castle Rock ales at reasonable prices. Fantastic band playing, the fiddle player was even better than me in my prime!
11 Feb 2011 16:41
Cool pub, great pint of Preservation. Quiet when I went in.
11 Feb 2011 16:40
Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, Nottingham
Mega-touristy. Absolutely crowded when I visited, but then again it was on a match day (County v Man City).
Beer was pretty good (I had the Rock Mild).
11 Feb 2011 16:39
Decent range of well-kept Greene King ales. Quiet when I was in one lunchtime.
30 Dec 2010 17:09
Excellent village pub, the Broadside is some the best I've ever had. You'll always feel welcome here.
30 Dec 2010 17:08
Lloyds No. 1 Cafe Bar, Milton Keynes
Real ale is not bad & very cheap, although there won't be much choice. It may seem kind of grim to some, but overall I'd say this is one of the better MK centre pubs.
7 Dec 2010 12:00
The Moon Under Water, Milton Keynes
Quite a few real ales on offer, unfortunately they tend to be a bit cold. Good location and not a bad place overall.
7 Dec 2010 11:58
At the moment, this pub is going from strength to strength. Its become more comfortable with its natural role as a darn good Charlie Wells pub with one or two guest beers, ensuring the beer is always in good condition. The new landlords have given it the feel of a local which had been missing for a while.
15 Nov 2010 13:57
Great pub, great beer. Cheap snacks on offer to soak up the beer but not clean out your wallet. A real find.
The only negative: it's a victim of its own success! Massively crowded on a Thursday evening. However I still managed to get served quickly, which was fantastic.
29 Oct 2010 09:58
Good choice of beers at a reasonable price. A trifle warm for my liking but that's being picky. If you're down this way & you like real ale then I'd recommend it.
29 Oct 2010 09:54
A bit hard to find this place if you aren't from the area, but a real gem. Beer is indeed on the expensive side but perfectly served.
29 Oct 2010 09:44
I didn't have a problem with this pub. In fact, I thought it was quite pleasant. Very good pint of beer on a Friday evening, crowded but not overcrowded. Clean and comfortable.
25 Sep 2010 10:03
I really rate this pub. Friendly landlord & staff who seem to do loads for charity. Some of the best beer in Bedford! No guest ale on last time I was here but that's a small thing really.
It may be a bit too modern inside for some, but there are plenty of olde-worlde pubs around with so-so beer. Give me a good pint at the White Horse anytime.
26 Aug 2010 16:23
I liked this pub. Friendly staff and clientele, reasonable prices. Local beer was on, maybe not to everyone's taste but I enjoyed it.
4 Jul 2010 15:12
Nice old-fashioned place. Agree with previous reviewer in that the Tetley's was very drinkable indeed.
4 Jul 2010 15:08
Nice relaxing pub, watched some World Cup football in here. Greene King IPA and Abbot in very nice condition indeed. Recommended.
24 Jun 2010 17:15
Best beer pub in Bedford by a mile. Great selection of well-kept real ales at reasonable prices, a rarity in these parts!
13 May 2010 18:58
Three Cups, Bedford
To littledrummerboy, I couldn't disagree more. 8 beers on handpump, beers available in 1/3 pints as well as halves and full pints. The prices are similar, if not slightly less, than before. I do miss the old two-bar Three Cups, but this sort of refub is unfortunately standard these days. It's much better than the supermarket cafe layout of some of the refurnished Charlie Wells pubs around town.
My feeling is that this will remain a real 'pub', different but certainly no worse. There is a knowledge of and commitment to real ales that you don't normally see.
The big test will be to see if the can keep it up, if they have enough custom to justify 8 ales and keep them well-kept, if they do start to have good events like quizzes. Time will tell.
Concerning the GBG, I think entries are usually suspended when a new landlord takes over, so I would indeed be surpised if this one is included next year on this technocailty.
I'll miss Tony's version but I can celebrate this new arrival on the scene.
