The Dickens Inn, Tower Hill

firm favourite when on a daytrip to London. tourists? yes, but then i guess i am one just for the day! interior looks knacked through dirt and poor care rather than age. but its all about the frontage onto the dock, which is picture perfect. always on bottled beer here so can comment really. not that many pubs in the area so always seems to be packed solid.

Coopers Arms, Hitchin

nice old traditional pub. beers are fine, though nothing out of the ordinary selection wise. been to a few good parties there, the perfect place for Christmas Eve etc..

Ivory, Hitchin

This bar opened Christmas 2005 and it seems perfect for Hitchin - upmarket, but not out of reach, smart but not too classy, just like the town itself really. THE place to be these days, the que reaches right down the road at weekends, Saturday in particular is packed as its open till 2am. Great music and large selection of drinks, would have given it 10/10 but loose a point for not selling Magners! WTF?

The Rose and Crown, Hitchin

tiny pub, busy at weekend due to late opening, not the nicest of crowds - but- i still drink there a few times a month, why? because they seem to have pretty good (and by that i mean fast) bar service, no matter how packed it gets. simple. (and no, i dont know the staff that posted earlier!) The corn exchange oposite could learn from them.

Chicago Rock Cafe, Stevenage

a agree with EM below, it is full of 40ish yr old divorcee's looking for their next victim! Music is standard wedding stuff - abba etc. pretty naff - but then you kinda knew that before you went in. the last resort.

The Green Man, Great Offley

Go for drinks only and the great garden view. But avoid the grub. Used to have a very good reputation, one of best food pubs in the area. Think it must have changed hands as it's absolutly awful now. Only ordered a mixed grill - how hard can that be? - but without exception everything was foul, overcooked, dried out, re-heated rubbish. Girlfriends food was no better. We were on the verge of not paying/complaing but did the British thing and kept quiet. learn from our mistake!

Cromwell's Bar (at the Sun Hotel), Hitchin

A Hitchin favourite for a Fri/Sat night. Not even open during the week - which is a bit odd? Excellent 'Clubby' music from friendly (not pretentious!) DJ's means it's always packed soild - as is the large courtyard garden. only bad points: long bar queue + the draft beer gave me a belly ache - still, there's always bottles :-)

Corn Exchange, Hitchin

mid-week, afterwork 5-8pm nice pub. Food suprisingly ok as well (microwave, but hey - it still tasted good). Needs a clean as place gets hammered (as do 99% of weekend customers). Best avoided on Fri+Sat nights - unless you really MUST pull that mini-skirted 18yr old! Not really sure what the attraction is these days - Hitchin has two clubs now (Penthouse & Zest) - both of which play better music and have less trouble.

The Orange Tree, Hitchin

i think Tones hit the nail on the head - WHY SO EXPENSIVE??
nice quiet pub during the week - just hits the wallet hard.

The Red Hart, Hitchin

used to drink in here all the time - in fact all day sunday sessions were held for many years, so feel i know it pretty well. BUT - me and 10 or so mates have all stopped visiting as its just dirty, filthy rotting place now - it just never gets cleaned. The beers fine, the rock music is good and the food aint that bad - just CLEAN IT! - last visit there were kebab wrappers floating around inside the bar!
