The Crown Inn, Fivehead

Oh dear, what a difference a year makes. We were the only people in the pub, albeit on a night of an England football match. 4 beers on, Cornish jack (had gone sour) Tribute, Cheddar potholer and Exmoor (Antler - also sour). 4 beers on and no customers = a lot of vinegar. Take 2 pumps at least off and beer quality will rise again. Still potentially a lovely pub.

The Rugglestone Inn, Widecombe in the Moor

Came for lunch on a typical Dartmoor summers day - cold, windy and drizzly but the pub was busy, if a little chilly. (can't they light fires in August?) Excellent pub and one of my faves but not perfect. 3 beers, Exmoor, Butcombe (Somerset) and Tribute (Cornwall). Living in Somerset as i do where all 3 of those are common as muck I was a tad disappointed that none of the 40 or so Devon breweries where represented, hence a miserly 8/10. Food portions are big - beware!

The Canal Inn, Wrantage

Came here not expecting much as the pub had been dying a slow death prior to closure. Was surprised and impressed by what has happened since, 4 ales (Otter bright, Exmoor Ale, Moor Revival and Cottage Whippet) plus good food. Keep it up Canal! Needs passing trade to survive as village is a collection of 4 or 5 houses on A378.

The Bell Inn, Martock

In on Sunday for charity fun day. Wasn't as good as last year didn't have as many stalls set up in the garden. Had Wickwar Bob and Cottage King Arthur which were both average. Didn't try food as there was a dodgy looking roast pork / burger van in the car park.

Bell and Crown Inn, Chard

Probably the best pub in Chard which is a good thing as the rest are fairly average. 3 ales on, Otter, Tribute and Branscombe Vale Draymans which was 2.50 a pint. Not the cosiest of places but welcoming and friendly.

Muddled Man, West Chinnock

I wish more pubs were like this one, friendly service, good beer, good food in large portions. Had the Moor beer which was in good nick. Enjoy.

The Hatch Inn, Hatch

In on a tuesday night and pub was quiet. Sharps Doom and something from Old Mill brewery. Beer was OK, served too cold though. I suppose that's marginally better than too warm - at least it will warm up in the glass! Chips were oven chips and poor so another mark off there. As a school report would say, has potential but could do better.

The Hope and Anchor, Bristol

Was expecting good things but the beer range was fairly unadventurous, Tim Taylors Landlord was 3.50 and there was also 2 from Otter, Bombardier and 6X. The food was good though and this pub has a warm feel to it. If its craft breweries beer you are after, try the pubs at the bottom of Jacobs Wells Road

The Seven Stars, Bristol

visited last night for a quick one and ended up going back later and had far too many, 8 hand pumps with Berrow Topsy Turvey, Yeovil Spring Forward, Stonehenge Sign of Spring, Plain Innspiration, one from Jollyboat, Arbor Hornbeam and Teignworthy reel Ale. This pub has just received Bristol CAMRA's pub of the year award and I can see why. Beers were all great. No food here mind

The White Hart, Sherborne

A Hall & Woodhouse (Badger) pub I have to admit I wasn't expecting much when I went in. However we had a very friendly welcome and our kids were made welcome too. Had a pint of the Hopping Hare which was excellent. We sat up in the restaurant bit due to our kids but the atmosphere around the bar was good with lots of people having Saturday lunch or a drink. Just shows, don't write a pub off from the outside!

The Green Dragon, Combe St Nicholas

Visited last night, its a large two roomed village local with passing trade on a minor route out of Chard. Two beers, Otter ale and Exmoor Ale 3.8 % which were in good order but a bit unimaginative as they were both 3.8%.
See Paris_Hilton's comments on other nearby pubs in Somerset, these beers seem to be in every freehouse in this area. Serves food and chips were good portions. Loads of interesting wood carving dotted around the place.

The Lamb and Lion, Hambridge

Nice friendly local pub with 3 real ales and taunton trad cider. Teignworthy Neep Tide was 2.00 a pint with Scrum Down 2.50 and Glastonbury Love Monkey. The Glastonbury was cloudy and off and my pint was changed without fuss as the barrel was near finished. Food was good and home made, but i was part of a special birthday party group.

18 Feb 2010 12:44

The Foresters Arms, Holywell

Large lane side pub in a cluster of houses known as Holywell. (a mile south of the A30 as it enters Yeovil). A freehouse, beers were from Cottage and Branscombe Vale. They were served with a chill haze, the outside cellar being too cold at this time of year. Otherwise no complaints. No food though which is surprising as these sort of rural pubs surely depend on this trade.

10 Feb 2010 08:48

The Halfway House Inn, Chilthorne Domer

Roadside tavern with chalet lodge accomodation at the rear. Now the only pub in the village it actually sits right on the A37 which bypasses Chilthorne Domer. The only beer on was the commonly available Sharps Doom Bar which always fails to inspire. It was drinkable and in good condition which reflects well on the cellarmanship here. Interior remains unaltered since the last review two years ago.

The Wyndham Arms, Kingsbury Episcopi

Two visits recently on a friday (pub packed) and Tuesday (pub near empty) this week. 4 hand pumps dispensing Butcombe, Doom Bar, Moor Merlins Magic and Yeovil Ruby, which was excellent. Some people eating the food looks above average but I tend not to eat in pubs often.
It is worrying that pubs are so quiet midweek. It is the tail end of January though so this is their "dead" period.
A good village freehouse, shame the village doesn't use it more in the week.

27 Jan 2010 09:34

Fleur de Lys, Yeovil

Modest beer, GK IPA, Abbot and Courage Best, doesn't seem to have escaped an early nineties time warp. This is Yeovil though and by all calculations not a bad place to end up for a pint.

20 Jan 2010 15:29

The Globe Inn, Somerton

Beers on were Butcombe, Dartmoor and Tribute, with not a great deal of quality. Pretty basic boozer in Somerton, was one of the busier pubs in these dark cold depths of January. The menu looks OK if a bit uninspiring, if you like puddings you got a freee one with each main course. Average.

8 Jan 2010 12:19

The Seven Stars, Winsley

Visiting family in village for New Year had a lunch to wipe out the hangover. yes it is done up more modern but there was a cracking log fire, and serveral tables of drinkers, many of them local to the village. Sure there are tables given over to food, but pubs have to survive these days. There were 4 beers on, 6X, Gem, Doom Bar and Festive Totty from Cheddar which was replaced with Yeovil Star Gazer. If all pubs served beer as well as it was here i wouldn't be complaining. Overall excellent food (not cheap) and beer and it was rammed with customers.

5 Jan 2010 13:01

The Bird In Hand, North Curry

Previous reviews are mixed and that just about sums this pub up. Should be a perfect looking village local, but disappoints. Only one beer on between Christmas and new Year which was Otter best and was not in good order, therefore low score held up by the pleasant ambience

30 Dec 2009 11:12

Rose and Crown, South Petherton

The Rose and Crown is a large restaurant type village pub, owned by Palmers brewery and featuring 5 of their beers on the bar as well as usual tap stuff. For a relatively small village this is a large pub, I have been on two occasions recently and found it fairly comfortable but with not a lot of punters. I do understand it gets busy in Summer with visitors to the nearby gardens in East Lambrook and the pub's own beer garden. Food is good however.

23 Dec 2009 13:26

The Carpenters Arms, Chilthorne Domer

Closed and boarded up for good after sporadically reopening for a month. Looks like the arrest of a local murder suspect in the pub and police closure was the final nail in the coffin. Not that the pub is in an area of inner city crime, its rural Somerset for ****s sake.

17 Dec 2009 08:51

The Quicksilver Mail, Yeovil

Well, not much more to add to The_Final_Arbiter's comment. yes the bar maid is very pleasant, Butcombe and Adnams spot on and Also Tribute available. Pete the landlord is not on a par (looks wise) with aforementioned barstaff but is probably one of the best in Yeovil making a Punch pub great, not an easy job in these times. Keep it up!

16 Dec 2009 10:18

The Bell, Yeovil

Well, visited last night and no Real ales to choose from, a most delightful scene of empty plastic pint pots placed upside down on top of the hand pumps. GK IPA extra cold keg was offered, I chose Guiness which, after my experience at the Phelips Montacute at least was drinkable.
Was equally surprised at the TV screen in each dining booth. Staff also particularly inept, 30 mins for a bowll of chips to appear. Pub? no.

9 Dec 2009 14:12

The Phelips Arms, Montacute

Ok ish village pub serving Palmers, allbeit in good condition. Tried a Guinness and wished I hadn't. Since when has it had cidery flavours? As a result lower marks than perhaps it merits, being the only pub open in this village now.

2 Dec 2009 09:53

The King's Arms, Montacute

Looked shut to me last night, no lights on.

2 Dec 2009 09:51

The Wheatsheaf Inn, South Petherton

Closed in Jan of this year and has not reopened yet and not looking likely either

27 Nov 2009 14:24

The Nags Head Tavern, Taunton

Must have visited this pub at a very similar time to gillhalfpint as had the Cotleigh as well. There was also another Cotleigh and one from Cottage on the bar. Landlord is very keen on the Real Ales. This looks like your typical roadside carvery type pub but the beer range would definitely attract the discerning drinker. Didn't try the food, but then this is Beer in the Evening!

26 Nov 2009 14:59

Drax Arms, Spetisbury

reopened last week and is now the Woodpecker

25 Nov 2009 12:16

The Royal Oak, Hardington Moor

Fantastic village pub with locals, visitors and skittlers making a lively atmosphere. Resident dog and cat unobtrusive. Real ales were Yeovil Star Gazer and Otter Bitter, served from the barrel in the cellar to the side of the bar. This is a pub that defies the doom and gloom in the industry and it represents all that is good about it. As a freehouse maybe pubcos should take a look at how to run a successful pub. Known as Sonnys locally after a previous landlord.

18 Nov 2009 09:16

The Devonshire Arms, Long Sutton

Still pretty much as alehouses described, beer now served direct from cellar as hand pumps were redundant, check board over bar for ales on, Moor Merlin's magic and Bath Spa both in good order. Lots of people eating so the food should be OK.

12 Nov 2009 09:52

The Kings Head, Crewkerne

Solid traditional village pub, a free house but has 3 pumps with Palmers beer on and a fourth guest ale which was not on. No food served tuesday night but atmosphere and solid fuel stove push up the rating, plus local folk musicians playing music.

4 Nov 2009 12:32

The Beaver Inn, Appledore

Friday lunchtime visit, Doom Bar, Otter and some Cottage stuff on as ales, Otter was good, Cottage had a haze. We ordered food which was universally approved. Even my kids ate it which was a miracle (6 and 2 years old). Will come back here on next visit.

2 Nov 2009 13:03

The Crown Inn, Fivehead

Excellent pub, Steve and Jackie made every effort to accomodate some steaming runners who descended out of the rain, despite skittles going on at the same time. 3 good real ales, Tribute, Cheddar and Black Prince, but was gutted to find Yeovil Ruby would be delivered after we left! . Multiple orders of chips were superb. Warm fuel burning stove added to the atmosphere on a wild october night.

22 Oct 2009 12:29

The Rusty Axe Inn, Martock

Tuesday night, pub (although you would expect it to be a city centre bistro judging by the interior) busy with diners having a Spanish themed evening. Butcombe and Cheddar on draught served through tight sparklers (why?). Beers were in good nick though. No idea if any locals would use this place, they'd be better off in the Wyndham down the road

14 Oct 2009 12:04

The White Hart Hotel, Martock

Busy village centre hotel with welcoming bar popular with visitors and locals. Three beers, Otter Ale, Sharps Doom and Yeovil Ale's Star Gazer, the last of which my running club helped drain. Food looks good, but have not yet sampled. Beware closing hours as previously mentioned.

9 Oct 2009 13:51

The Duke of York, Shepton Beauchamp

3 or 4 real ales on in this Local pub. Tried Cheddar potholer which was well kept. They also had Otter 4.5% and Teignworthy on. Seemed quite busy on an October mid week evening

9 Oct 2009 13:48

The Half Moon Inn, Stoke St Mary

Local pub in small village, so why were all the beers standard brands?
Youngs and Butcombe were on offer. Chips were good though
