Cock O' The North, Bel Bar

staff here are really unhelpful and the food is very expensive for what it is (ie McMullens' standard pub menu).
Whilst we were here a guy went to the bar and asked for a wine recommendation and was met with the comment:
"Here's the wine list" followed by "Medium white wine".
Shocking, really.
Wouldn't come here again if you paid me.

Robin Hood, Botany Bay

recently had lunch here. Service was good and food was decent although I have to say 10+ for most dishes considering the chips are not even home made isn't great although not dissimilar to most other food pubs.
Nice inside and quite atmospheric on a cold winters' day or outside on a hot summer one.
Staff are helpful and friendly.
Would have given a 7 but for the price of the food

Jubilee Inn, Pelynt

recently changed hands and the place is all the better for it. Great food and reasonable beer (St Austell Ales). Only pub in the village.

The Cock and Dragon, Cockfosters

Not much local competition but nonetheless a good pub all the same. Deceptively big with a vast number of nooks and crannies in which to disappear. Can be a tad smoky in winter but a real treat in summer with a great beer garden. Staff are friendly and attentive and the bar food is competitively priced with large portions. Never eaten in the restauarnt but it looks pretty good too.
Only downside is moron content can be high on a Saturday night due to lack of suitable alternatives - I have been there on more than one occasion when loud profanity laden conversations have taken place alongside a pleasant dinner.

The Ferry Inn, Horning

I concur. Landlord was really helpful with boat mooring and food ok too. Nice big pub with lots of seats.

O'Neills, Harrow

Can take a while to get served but prices OK and friendly staff. Decent crowd but as ever too many blokes. Late licence a bonus. Very very smoky.

Notleys, Lowestoft

bit random and certainly 'interesting' as a lone Crystal Palace supporter when they played West Ham but hey reasonable service and loads of tv screens. Not sure whether I'd come of an evening though.

Woolpack, Hertford

Great pub. We meant to start a pub crawl here and never got any further. Staff were friendly and srevice was efficient. Also, ridiculously convenient for both the town centre and the excellent local Thai restaurant.

The Corrib Rest, Queens Park

Amen to kmcs. This is the best pub in the area by a mile and the comments about the football are spot on. I have watched loads of games in here because I like the beer and the atmosphere but it can get full of these 'new' Queens Park types, the less said about which the better. Ignore them and enjoy the friendly staff and 'unique' music on offer.

The Lion Inn, Theberton

Not a bad little pub, great selection of beers and plenty of atmosphere. Regular live music as well.

The Eels Foot Inn, Eastbridge

what a great pub. Location cannot be bettered and the beer is great. One word of warning - book for food unless it is a Wednesday in January.

The Angels Reply, Hitchin

I am biased as it's been my dad's local since it opened many years ago but I like this pub a lot. Food is very good value, esp. the peri peri chicken (the landlord is Portugese) and the service is good.
In the unlikley event you are in town to see Hitchin Town FC play, ideal for a pre or post match beer as it's within 5 minutes of the ground.

The Jolly Sailors, Pakefield

Best pub food in Lowestoft (don't laugh) - huge portions and loads of local ingredients. Not a bad pub either - decent selection of ales - but definitely best to eat your food in the bar as you can never get a seat in the 'restaurant'. Alternatively come later as the locals tend to eat early, unlike us city folk.
Very relaxing place to end the day - long may it continue.

The Trowel and Hammer, Lowestoft

Fantastic character boozer - been coming for 20 years or more on family holidays. Bar a bit smoky but friendly staff and good atmosphere. Food looks Ok but there's a great chippy just around the corner...

The Merryhills, Oakwood

Not a great boozer. We couldn't get food at 8pm on a Sunday which I thought was quite poor. Sevice at best OK but very dubious crowd, be wary of where you aprk your car due to pikey kids hanging around outside.

Railway Bell, New Barnet

Have to agree with all the other reviews. Almost comically cheap beer and food but this is reflected in occasionally erratic service and tables sometimes overflowing with empty glasses.
Staff friendly and food served quick which is a plus, as is the beer garden.
Can attract a very random crowd on Fridays and Saturdays.

The Railway Tavern, New Barnet

Generally a good atmosphere and has a handy late licence but can get rammed full for football games. Probably better for a quiet pint when Arsenal or Spurs aren't on telly.

26 Jan 2006 10:54

The Queens Arms, New Barnet

great place for a pre-match pint as they normally have loads of extra staff. Quite roomy too. Haven't tried the food but it looks Ok and sure is cheap.
Staff generally friendly and efficient.

The Builders Arms, New Barnet

Fantastic old school boozer, full of characters, locals, dogs resting, young and old alike. Deceptive when you step into the small front bar but round the side is an excellent side bar with Sky Sports and a back patio that is great on sunny days.
Pubs like this need preserving before they all disappear.
