The Shakespeare's Head, Leicester

Whilst it certainly wouldn't win any architectural awards or any for trendy decor, everything that's important is great! Fast, polite service and a lovely pint of Oakwell Dark Mild for just 1.80.

3 Jun 2012 21:05

The Pub, Leicester

I agree entirely with the other reviewers. Great choice of beer and my pint was in excellent condition. Service quick and polite too!

3 Jun 2012 21:00

The Ale Wagon, Leicester

An excellent little pub. Quick, polite service and a good range of beers. The HOB which I chose was superb.

3 Jun 2012 20:45

The Brasshouse, Birmingham

Judging by the earlier reviews, I must have come in on a good day! Quick, polite service and a top condition pint of Banks's Bitter. Recommended!

The Brasshouse, Birmingham

Judging by the earlier reviews, I must have come in on a good day! Quick, polite swrvice and a top condition pint of Banks's Bitter. Recommended!

Old Orleans, Guildford

Bit of a mystery this. Been closed for ages but with all signage and furniture apparently intact. Unsurprising as had been going downhill for some time, culminating in my last visit on a Winter evening when the heating wasn't working and it was absolutely freezing! Will not be missed.

23 Mar 2011 12:35

Hatters Inn, Bognor Regis

Efficient, polite service and an excellent pint of Arundel Stronghold in a clean and welcoming pub.

22 Feb 2011 11:08

The Rai D'Or, Salisbury

Pretty quiet when I visited on a Thursday tea time. Landlord was very friendly and came to chat with me at the table, which some might think forward but as he seemed a nice bloke I didn't mind! Only two real ales to choose from but, as he explained, that means they turn over more quickly and thus stay fresher and the pint of Elderquad that I sampled was, indeed, very good.

19 Feb 2011 20:00

The Digby Tap, Sherborne

A nice little pub with a polite and efficient barman and a good range of well priced beer. Could perhaps do with a lick of paint and a clean but otherwise no complaints.

19 Feb 2011 19:53

The Phoenix, Gillingham

Appears to have closed down. Some external signs removed and a 'To Let' board on display.

19 Feb 2011 19:51

The George, Hayes

Sadly I have to agree with all the negative reviews. A once down to earth, traditional pub has been ruined in a sad, desperate attempt to make it appear trendy, with extortionately priced, pretentious food served in tiny portions and a breathtaking 4.05 price tag for a bottle of Grolsch to match. Despite this, however, not sure that I predict its early demise with as much certainty as some of the other reviewers. On the day I visited there were a goodly number of suitably pretentious customers who seemed more than happy to part with a small proportion of their over inflated bank balances in this depressing place.

19 Feb 2011 17:19

The White Hart, Beaconsfield

Very busy with diners when I visited on Sunday afternoon, but barman was quick and friendly and the pint of Doom Bar was in good condition and, at 2.60, reasonably priced for the area. Only problem was finding a seat!

6 Oct 2010 10:48

The Queens Head, Chesham

Polite, quick service and a lovely pint of ESB. Not cheap at 3.30 a go, but looking at the clientele I doubt that will bother them!

6 Oct 2010 10:40

The Robert William Loosley, High Wycombe

A nice clean, cheap pub. Service was friendly, if a little slow on my visit as only one member of bar staff was present. Overall, though, a pleasant experience!

6 Oct 2010 10:19

The Palmerston Arms, Peterborough

A lovely, unusual little pub. A great choice of excellent beers, politely and efficiently served straight from the barrels. Recommended!

2 Oct 2010 09:35

The Ostrich Inn, Peterborough

Friendly, efficient service (even though the poor bar lady was being bored senseless by a man at the bar!) and a wide choice of real ales, the one of which I tried was lovely!

2 Oct 2010 09:32

College Arms, Peterborough

A nicely presented Wetherspoon's, but suffered from two of their recurring problems when I visited - slow service by a barman who seemed pretty clueless and an impressive looking array of pump clips that weren't actually backed up by their beers being available! Having said that, when I did manage to find one that was on - Milestone Lion's Pride - it was in excellent condition.

2 Oct 2010 09:22

The Cherry Tree, Peterborough

An excellent little pub! Fast, friendly service and a wide choice of real ales, the one of which I sampled being superb. A lick of paint would make it an even more pleasant place to be!

2 Oct 2010 09:16

Charters Bar, Peterborough

A superb selection of real ales - sadly I only had time to sample one - the Oakham Bishop's Farewell, which was excellent. Bar service was efficient and friendly. My only complaint is that, being down in the depths of the boat, the place appears generally gloomy and claustrophobic with little or no natural light.

2 Oct 2010 08:44

The Brewery Tap, Peterborough

Very impressed! Although the pub was busy being a Friday night, the bar staff were efficient and friendly and both real ales I sampled were superb.

2 Oct 2010 08:40

The Roundhouse, Battersea

Warning! Seeing this pub was in the new 2011 Good Beer Guide decided to give it a try yesterday afternoon about 2 pm but found it closed, contrary to the guide which shows it as open all day!

28 Sep 2010 19:28

Le Gothique, Wandsworth

One of the hardest pubs to find in the Good Beer Guide, and once you get there it doesn't really look like one! Polite service and beer not bad either, but nothing special that really justified the long search for the place.

28 Sep 2010 19:21

Thomas Lloyd, Warwick

A very pleasant Wetherspoon's when I visited on a Tuesday lunchtime. The bar staff dealt with the large number of customers both courteously and quickly and the food came quickly and was very nice too. My only gripe was the limited choice of guest ales - only two available - but those that there were were in excellent condition. The toilets must also have improved greatly since the earlier reviewer visited - I happened to notice just how sparkling clean they were!

22 Sep 2010 09:00

The Cape of Good Hope, Warwick

An excellent little pub with a choice of six real ales, the three of which I sampled all being in superb condition. There is also a good choice of food, although it does seem a little expensive. The staff are efficient and friendly and the setting quiet and relaxing by the canal.

22 Sep 2010 08:55

Queen Victoria, Theydon Bois

An excellent pub! Quick, friendly service in a nice looking, clean environment with plenty of seating inside and out. Mind your head if tall, though!

14 Sep 2010 16:58

The William Aylmer, Harlow

Okay so it might not win any architectural awards or be in the most picturesque of locations to say the least, but once inside I found this to be a very pleasant and clean pub. Immediate, friendly service and the food came quickly and was of a good standard. Best set off well before you need the loo, though, it's a long walk!

14 Sep 2010 16:54

The Swan In The Rushes, Loughborough

An excellent range of beers and quick, friendly service, even though it was hindered by a large number of those irritating people who insist on hanging around the bar when not waiting to be served. Pub was very crowded on the Friday evening when I visited but still managed to find a seat on the large outdoor upstairs balcony.

14 Sep 2010 16:47

Amber Rooms, Loughborough

Equally good as the other Wetherspoon's in Loughborough. Quick, friendly service, a quality, cheap pint and a pleasant atmosphere even on a Friday evening when I visited.

14 Sep 2010 16:26

The Moon And Bell, Loughborough

An excellent Wetherspoon's - polite, quick service, a nice little open air seating area at the back and a cheap, superb real ale. Top marks!

14 Sep 2010 15:41

The Hand In Hand, Wimbledon Common

Greeted by a very friendly landlord selling an excellent range of good quality ales. Only gripe is the very high price, but having made similar observations about the clientele to the earlier reviewers I am sure that is not an issue for them!

9 Sep 2010 12:05

The Rocket , Putney

A strange pub! A Wetherspoon's that tries to be upmarket - with inflated food prices to match. Various equally odd restrictions about where you can sit if only having a drink. Quick service and a good choice of beers, but judging by the lack of customers compared to The Railway down the road the locals agree that Wetherspoon's should stick with what they do best - a cheap and cheerful, unpretentious down to earth pub.

9 Sep 2010 12:01

The Green Man, Putney Heath

A pleasant pub with a good selection of beers and a friendly barman when I visited. Also has one of the poshest looking pub gents' loos I have ever come across!

9 Sep 2010 08:24

The Bricklayers Arms, Putney

The best pub I have been to in ages! Friendly, quick service, a wide range of superb real ales (including no less than five from Timothy Taylor) and in pleasant, down to earth surroundings. Highly recommended!

9 Sep 2010 08:20

The Falcon, Clapham Junction

Would agree entirely with the previous reviewer - quick, friendly service and a vast choice of beer. Is a bit pricey, but where isn't round here?

8 Sep 2010 12:47

The Prince of Wales, Birmingham

Prompt, friendly service, a good beer at a reasonable price in a clean, tidy, traditional pub. What else could you ask for?

8 Sep 2010 12:44

The Canalside Cafe, Birmingham

I was luckier with the service here than several of the other reviewers - the young lady who served me was both friendly and efficient, serving me straight away and taking care to collect empty glasses and plates promptly. The beer wasn't bad either. My only minor complaint would be that the toilets were pretty primitive and could do with a good clean and a lick of paint!

8 Sep 2010 12:34

Rising Sun, Brentwood

Not a bad little pub. Friendly, quick service and the pint of Brentwood Mild was satisfactory if nothing special. A few stares from what I assume to be the regulars at the bar, but in a curious rather than an aggressive way.

31 Aug 2010 15:58

The Lord Palmerston, Dartmouth Park

Not my kind of place. Service a little reluctant, prices high (one that stood out that I spotted on the blackboard was a mind blowing 4.65 for a bottle of Crabbie's) and my pint of real ale was nothing special either. I also had to sit and endure a couple of pretentious loud, foul mouthed youngsters spouting their boring opinions on the front terrace. Enjoyed the nearby Dartmouth Arms much more when I visited there a couple of years ago.

31 Aug 2010 15:54

The Duke of Hamilton, Hampstead

This pub was a breath of fresh air after the Old White Bear down the road. Quick, friendly service with a smile, a lovely well kept pint of ESB and a jovial clientele of normal, down to earth people. And it's cheaper too!

31 Aug 2010 15:43

Ye Olde White Bear, Hampstead

Stood at the bar waiting ages to be served whilst the lone barman mixed pretentious cocktails for the even more pretentious clientele posing at the bar. Having finished this he then decided to prioritise washing glasses before condescending to serve me a very average pint of Abbot Ale for a distinctly un-average price of 3.50. Fortunately, however, his mathematical skills matched his customer service ones and I received 2.50 change from my fiver! If you have a big ego and an even larger wallet, come here; if you are an ordinary bloke wanting a quicker, cheaper, better condition pint, go to the Duke of Hamilton instead!

31 Aug 2010 15:15

The British Volunteer, Weybridge

A clean, pleasant pub with several real ales available and efficient, friendly service. My only gripe was the price - 3.40 a pint.

26 Aug 2010 12:07

The Three Compasses, Alfold

A lovely tucked away little pub with very friendly service and great beer. The kids' play area is also well situated to be near enough for those who need to keep an eye on their children, without being so close that it annoys those that don't!

25 Aug 2010 07:54

Hogshead, Wolverhampton

Quick, friendly service and a great choice of real ales in a clean and bright pub. The pint of Shugborough I chose was superb. Only complaint was the Sky Sports football on the TV - not a problem in itself but the fact that it was turned up to ear shattering proportions that made conversation difficult.

15 Aug 2010 09:07

The Posada, Wolverhampton

An unusual, characterful little pub. Six real ales were available when I visited - I chose the Moorhouses Black Cat which was superb! The bar staff were also efficient and friendly. My only complaint was that the place could do with a good clean and a new carpet.

15 Aug 2010 09:02

The Old Thatch Tavern, Stratford Upon Avon

A lovely old pub. Quick, friendly service and a lovely pint of Purity Ale!

15 Aug 2010 08:46

Charlie Hall, Erdington

Quick, friendly service and a lovely real ale in a nice clean pub. A satisfied customer!

15 Aug 2010 08:43

The Golden Bee, Stratford Upon Avon

Quick, friendly service and a lovely pint of Arundel Footslogger, together with a special offer curry for 2.99 - and all in a clean, bright and airy pub. Top marks!

15 Aug 2010 08:39

The Drummond, Guildford

An excellent pub. Loads of choice of drinks (including consistently well kept ales) and fast and friendly service. Also a choice of two outside seating areas. Recommended!

12 Aug 2010 07:31

The Hatch Inn, Colemans Hatch

I would disagree with 'Whirling Dervish' below - this is DEFINITELY the worst pub in Sussex! Gave up trying after waiting fifteen minutes to be served. It took this long for the dithery barman to serve the one customer in front of us, whilst his female colleague also ignored us in favour of her pals seated at a nearby table. When Mr. Slow finally finished fumbling he then proceeded to serve one of the local young inbreds who had blatantly swaggered up long after our arrival. Cue a chorus of 'Blow this for a game of soldiers' and this hopeless establishment lost whatever king's ransom it would have charged us for a pint.

8 Aug 2010 15:57

The Anchor Inn, Hartfield

Would go along with the previous reviewers' comments. Tatty decor and the barmaid seemed more interested in banter with her mates than serving customers. The real ale was also in poor condition and one of the benches on the balcony collapsed when I sat on it (no I'm not forty stone!). The only redeeming feature was the nice view of the village from the front terrace!

8 Aug 2010 15:09

The Dorset Arms, Withyham Hartfield

Would go along with everyone else here. Quick, friendly service and a lovely pint of Hadlow Bitter in the relaxing garden admiring a couple of classic Ferraris in the garage opposite!

8 Aug 2010 14:55

The Royal Oak, Tunbridge Wells

Prompt, friendly service and a lovely pint of Larkins Traditional in the garden. Very enjoyable!

8 Aug 2010 14:52

The Capitol, Forest Hill

My second visit to this unusual Weterspoon's and just as impressed as the first time. The bar staff dealt with the Friday night crowds politely and efficiently and the beer was good too.

31 Jul 2010 08:57

Windmill, Sydenham

Quick, friendly service and a very nice pint of Old Speckled Hen too. Even the amateur musicians were good! Overall very civilised on my Friday night visit.

31 Jul 2010 08:54

The Town of Ramsgate, Wapping

Quick, friendly service and a choice of four real ales, albeit nothing out of the ordinary. Nice view over the river although only space for a very small area outside which means it soon fills up.

31 Jul 2010 08:50

The Surrey Docks, Surrey Quays

Quick, friendly service and a lovely pint of Ind Coope Burton Ale - didn't even know they still brewed the stuff!

31 Jul 2010 08:46

The Brockley Barge, Brockley

Quick, friendly service (even though I visited on a Friday evening). Five guest beers to choose from. I had the Westerham Target, which was lovely!

31 Jul 2010 08:44

The Briar Rose, Birmingham

Quick, polite service despite being a busy Friday afternoon/evening. Sadler's JPA was like vinegar but courteously exchanged for an alternative.

24 Jul 2010 09:06

The Boatman, Guildford

This pub has probably the nicest outlook of any in Guildford, but possibly some of the most pretentious customers too!

As a previous reviewer commented only two real ales to choose from, but the excellent quality of the Otter Bitter more than made up for that.

21 Jul 2010 14:01

The French Horn, Alton

An excellent pub - friendly, quick service, great beer and a lovely garden.

19 Jul 2010 19:25

The Ship, Alresford

An excellent pub with friendly staff and great beer.

19 Jul 2010 19:23

The Castle of Comfort, Medstead

A superb pub. Excellent, friendly service and friendly locals when I visited. Pint of Courage Director's was best had ever tasted!

19 Jul 2010 18:47

Stables Pub, Weetwood

Top marks from me too! Well priced excellent food, great beer and nice location. Only complaint is beer a bit on the expensive side.

12 Jul 2010 12:18

Dragon Inn, Birmingham

No complaints - quick, polite service, a cheap and good quality ale and I could sit outside in the sun!

12 Jul 2010 12:16

The Old Fox, Birmingham

Service and beer good and was able to sit outside on the warm evening I visited.

12 Jul 2010 12:06

The Old Fox, Birmingham

Service and beer good and was able to sit outside on the warm evening I visited.

The Old Fox, Birmingham

Service and beer good and was able to sit outside on the warm evening I visited.

12 Jul 2010 12:06

The Plough and Harrow, Stourbridge

Agree with the previous reviewers. Although busy on the warm afternoon that I visited the service was quick and friendly and the beer in good condition.

12 Jul 2010 12:01

The Edward Rutland, Stourbridge

I would definitely agree with the previous reviewer. I was served quickly and politely and although my pint was off it was courteously changed for a very acceptable alternative. the pub was also clean and tidy throughout.

12 Jul 2010 11:23

Yates's, Guildford

Now a Tesco Express after a couple of years empty.

20 Jun 2010 14:28

The Keystone, Guildford

A nice pub with friendly, efficient staff and good quality real ales. An excellent relaxing alternative when Wetherspoon's is packed and ear splitting on a Monday, Friday or Saturday evening. Be warned though that seems to be closed on Sunday evenings whenever I have attempted to go there then.

20 Jun 2010 14:26

Rodboro Buildings, Guildford

As a regular at this pub I can honestly say that it has improved greatly over the past couple of years, both in terms of the staff (who are always friendly and efficient even when under pressure) and the quality and selection of the real ales which are now consistently good. Best avoided on Friday and Saturday evenings after about 8pm, though - and strangely at a similar time on a Monday when Guildford's student population has a night out - when anyone over 25 feels ancient and the music is deafening!

20 Jun 2010 14:20

The Midnight Bell, Leeds

A superb pub - excellent service, great beer, plenty of outside seating and very clean throughout - top marks!
