Shuts early (5-6pm) on a Sunday which caught me out. Otherwise awesome.

Shut. Currently being refurbed as something - not sure if it's still going to be a pub.

The Dunalley Street Bar, Cheltenham
I went to this bar expecting to see American astronauts and A-list celebs and saw NOTHING except a dirty tramp and some dusty banknotes. I will sue this website and all that sail in her

The Duke of Hamilton, Hampstead
As featured on The Apprentice. Hopefully the watery spag bol is no longer being served!
10 Apr 2008 12:35
This used to be a decent place. Now it seems to be inhabited by the scum of the earth. Avoid.
7 Apr 2008 12:28
I've removed the awful slanging match that was going on here.
28 Mar 2008 12:38
As a previous poster said, this is a pub that does decent food rather than a restaurant that serves beer. Quiet and out of the way. Nice open fires too!

The Garrett (previously The Old Garrett), Manchester
We tried to go in on Sunday and it was shut.

The Fox Inn, Chaddesley Corbett
Food not great - obviously frozen or from packets. Gordon Ramsey would have a field day in here!
28 Aug 2006 17:12
Watch out if you go on a Sunday - you'd expect a pub to be open at 1pm, instead we got nasty looks from the landlady when she opened up 20 minutes later.

Avoid when football matches are on. They clear out half of the furniture so they can cram more people in and serve beer in plastic glasses.

The Southwark Tavern, London Bridge
Very good, downstairs is a lot nicer than the madness that is the ground floor. Beer great and food middling when we went.

Nice and quiet. Seems to be slightly geared towards serving food; however they didn't mind when we went in for drinks and were very nice when I had to change my erroniously-ordered vodka and coke for a vodka and diet coke. Unfortunately the resulting drink didn't have much vodka in it but I guess that's fair enough!

PS Just in case anyone from N&D reads this, stick a couple of speakers near the street side of the bar as the music is very quiet there.
21 May 2006 00:45
Had a couple of real ales when we went in (also a Saturday), but we had lagers which were excellently kept.
21 May 2006 00:35
Used to be one of the coolest bars in Manchester. Now it's a bit dodgy.
Good points: quite open, lots of seating, decent selection of beers, not bad music while we were there.
Bad points: a little smelly, a high scally quotient (which may relate to the smell), not half as good as it used to be.

Great bar. In the afternoon the music is "there" without being too much. I bet this is a great place to go at night. Plus the barman gave us a free diet coke when we accidentally wobbled the table and spilt ours.

Lloyds No. 1 Cafe Bar, Milton Keynes
Ok but a bit clinical and bland. Good staff and decent food, though.
7 May 2006 22:35
The Cock Hotel, Stony Stratford
Nice enough, decent outside seating area but when we went all of our glasses were dirty. Unfortunately we only noticed this after we'd finished our drinks!
7 May 2006 22:33
Bit of a gastropub. Small drinking area and large eating area. We were put off by the toothless locals propping up the bar.
2 May 2006 12:32
A terrible place, populated by poloshirt-wearing chavs trying to score with the local slappers.
2 May 2006 12:29
The Haunch of Venison, Salisbury
Absolutely tiny. More of a restaurant than a pub, unfortunately.
2 May 2006 12:26
This pub doesn't look like it's being kept very well. The furniture is knackered and when we went we were bothered by flies. Used to be a great pub, I hope it returns to its former glory soon.

The Thirsty Scholar, Manchester
A bit dark and dank. The beer wasn't up to much when we went and the jukebox decided to play tracks that we hadn't selected. Told the bloke behind the bar but no refund. Seems to be unsure what kind of pub it wants to be, but currently isn't the kind of pub I'd like to visit again.

The Brunswick / B Lounge, Manchester
Now seems to be trying to call itself the B Lounge - a place for hip, happening people to go and be hip and happening. Unfortunately this is ruined by the fact that a) it's a pub, and b) the big sign outside still says "The Brunswick"!
I hope they stop this faffery soon and get back to being a decent pub in a good location.

The Briton's Protection Hotel, Castlefield
I think they're planning to rebuild it brick by brick somewhere else (much like Sinclairs etc were).
25 Mar 2006 11:26
We keep closed pubs on the site so people who used to drink and/or work there can have a chat about them. Plus the fact that the pub has closed is pretty useful information.

One of the worst Wetherspoons I've ever been in and that's saying something. Bad service, some meals weren't on when we went, the tables and chairs are really beaten up and to top it off there's a horrible smell near the bar.
4 Mar 2006 12:44
Absolutely cracking views of the Bund from the 87th floor. Great service and not as expensive as you'd expect it to be. You have to get three lifts to reach it but it's definately worth it!

The Faulkners Arms, Altrincham
Last time we went in the barman kept turning the music up until half of the punters left - including us. It's supposed to be a pub, not a nightclub. It was only teatime too!
29 Jan 2006 11:35
Desperately trying to be trendy. However it'd be a decent place to go to get away from the lager-fuelled idiots who frequent the other bars in the area.
29 Jan 2006 11:29
Nice and quiet in the daytime and a noisy mess at night.
23 Jan 2006 13:28
The Parade used to be a quality place for after-hours beers when working on the pier. Apparently it's all change here now - a restaurant downstairs? I remember when it was pool tables and a jukebox. What a shame.

Tip: blue text on a blue background does not make the name of your bar easy to read from across the street.
19 Jun 2005 15:06
Fantastic city centre bar. Very high-class but not pretentious in any way - it is as good as it thinks it is. Proper restaurant on the premises and has a reward scheme (e.g. spend 50 and get a 10 bottle of wine for free). Fairly pricey though.
29 May 2005 22:58
Not half as poncey (or pricey) as you might think. Tries very hard to be cool.
29 May 2005 22:44
Note: You don't HAVE to book a seat in advance, however it's advisable on Saturday night for example.
7 May 2005 10:04
Great beer here. As other comments suggest this pub is very smoky - sit at the back to get away from it. Looks a bit tatty inside but don't let that put you off.
19 Feb 2005 13:35
Decent pub, doesn't have much personality but the beer's ok as is the food.
19 Feb 2005 13:33
Not very nice. Cold, empty and the drink left a lot to be desired.
30 Dec 2004 20:11
Great, nice and cosy in the winter. I should imagine it'd be good in the summer too what with the outside seating near the river/canal.

The Thornbury Castle, Marylebone
Small and very very busy. Looked a bit dodgy when we first walked in but wasn't that bad in the end.
19 Dec 2004 10:53
Not half as bad as these comments may suggest. Busy though.
19 Dec 2004 10:52
Not too bad for a station pub, I've definately seen worse.
19 Dec 2004 10:40
Not a bad pub, the beer was ok and they do a good all-day breakfast. The staff did seem a little rude but perhaps it's because their English isn't that good, as another comment has already mentioned.
19 Dec 2004 10:36
According to the local rag this pub is apparently haunted. I certainly saw a few spirits last time I was there...
22 Nov 2004 13:19
The Yew Tree, Northern Moor
It's open again and no longer a pub.
