The Kellaway Arms, Horfield

Always felt this pub lacked something (atmosphere?) in the past but new incarnation is a vast improvement. Really impressive range of well kept beers and food looked good and was going down well when I was in. Accidentally arrived during Happy Hour (5-7) which meant all ales and ciders were 2.50. :-)

Very firendly and helpful staff. Well worth a visit.

The Barley Mow, Bristol

Went in for the first time this afternoon. Very impressed. Friendly, tidy pub with well kept BBF beer and good food (by the look of it). Best pub in the area by a long way. Mr partner liked it too - appreciated the Stowford Press. I agree that it would be nice to have a guest beer on tho.

Berkeley Arms, Tewkesbury

Popped in for a couple of pints at lunchtime a few weeks ago. Nice little two roomed local with basic food and wide range of Wadworths beers. Friendly local on main street.

The Hatchet Inn, Bristol

Friendly service and decent food, cider and beer at fair prices. Beer a bit boring (Butcombe and Courage Best) but tastes fine. A proper pub just off the centre of Bristol.

The Duke Of York, Bristol

Easily the best pub in the area at the moment. Usually has four different ales - the optimum number for a pub this size I reckon. I had a lovely pint of Arkells IPA from the IOM there yesterday evening. Also sells decent cider and all at good prices. Friendly and efficient service in a really good atmosphere. Well worth a visit. Or lots of visits actually. :-)

The Phoenix, Bristol

I've often walked past this pub but went in for the first time yesterday. As people have said, basic boozer with great Bass from the barrel - very friendly. Failed my partner's test by not serving any decent cider - just get some bottles of Weston's Organic - but great apart from that. Hope it picks up some passing trade from the new shopping centre - perfect place for a post shop pint. Or just stay here while your partner goes shopping!

The Apple, Bristol

Great pub. I'm a beer drinker myself, but when in Rome.... Great range of lovely ciders. I'm sure you can get them cheaper down the road at The Orchard, but the prices are by no means extortionate - 2.50 for a pint of Thatchers Dry - lovely job. and worth every penny for the location when it's sunny. Bit cramped downstairs when it's not, but all seems ok after after a few pints of Thatchers. :-)

The Bell Inn, Bristol

Very fair review TWG. I also applaud Glen Dawkins for his sympathetic pub takeovers, keeping the good bits and expanding the beer range. But the prices are a bit much. I happen to know that at least one of the beers being sold for over 3 a pint when I visited is being supplied to the pub for under 1 a pint. I know pubs have overheads, but I can't help but feel that this sort of pricing is counterproductive, especially in the current financial climate. Great pubs, but good value?

The Adam and Eve, Bristol

Lovely, cosy pub with good food (lunch until 4 on Sunday), proper cider and local Bristol beer from Arbor Ales - one of the more interesting local breweries IMO.

The Cat and Wheel, Bristol

The Cat seems to be back on course. Live footie is now a regular feature - no more last minute phone calls - "they're not showing it at the Cat. Where are we going?"

But it's not just a footie pub - live music, good (extended) garden, good mix of clientele, decent beer and proper cider. Were doing home-made pizzas recently but not sure if they still are.

Best proper pub on this bit of Glos Road.

The Barge Inn, Seend Cleeve

Dropped in here on the way back from Dorset a couple of months back. Proper pub with good beer and good simple food at very reasonable prices. Worth a visit.

Rising Sun, Bishopston

A dump with crap beer. Only redeeming feature is that when every other pub on the Gloucester Road is showing the vital Scotland vs Italy rugby game this place will still be showing the footy. And staff are friendly. But it's still an awful pub.

The Prince of Wales, Bishopston

I thought this pub was better when it was a poky little local. New incarnation fell between two stools - was it a trendy wine bar or a proper pub? Seem to be moving back in the direction of proper pub recently. Beer ok, food good, service at the bar can be appallingly slow, as iyers says above.

The Cat and Wheel, Bristol

I think shitbin is a bit harsh. Decent boozer with good beer and cider, i.e. not just fizzy piss. Used to go quite a lot to watch footy but got fed up with their preference for showing rugby / buggering about with what sport they were showing on tele.

The John Cabot, Horfield

Friendly but a bit grotty.

The Tinto Lounge, Horfield

Trendy bar with lots with lots of posers sat in the window. Ok if you like that sort of thing.

Anchor, Bishopston

Young persons pub full of sports screens and dodgy lager. Can watch footy thro portholes in the gents which is handy. Lots of better pubs in the area tho.

19 Jan 2008 22:11

The Annexe Inn, Bristol

Has some good beers, food and screens for watching footy. Management not particularly helpful or friendly tho which is disappointing.

The Duke Of York, Bristol

A great pub.

Friendly, good beer and cider and 'urban' garden.

Under threat - pub to be sold off and redeveloped as flats? A tragedy if it happens.

The Bell Inn, Bristol

Interesting posh pub - they put your crisps in a bowl! But eccentric landlady and staff are friendly and beer is good - Butcombe plus another last time I was there (I think).

The Ship Aground Bar, Bristol

This bar is currently closed and the premises up for sale - June 05.

Which is a shame as it's a pleasant laid-back bar with good views over the arse-end of Bristol from its garden.

The Foresters Arms, Bristol

Friendly pub which usually offers one or two decent beers, e.g. Butcombe Bitter. If you're after a quiet pint in a friendly atmosphere it's probably the best in the area.

It's also home to the largest Celtic supporters club in the SW so, if you go there when there's a Celtic game on, it will be very busy!
