Yes indeed, the good ship Victory has been holed below the waterline. The grog has gone off (tasks like they threw the old spinning dog's body in the brewing vats) and the crew stand by to repel boarders (by not changing the bed linen).

This place is even more pretentious than I am, but doesn't have the class to back it up. The owner, in his own desperate way, peppers the reviews with laughably optimistic descriptions of the ambience. Best avoided.

A grisley little hovel that still maintains the whiff of stale tobacco despite being several months on from the start of smoke free legislation.

I and my compatriots were shocked to discover the Hop Pole hostelry was trading without a license to sell alcohol - the landlord said he didn't give a 4X but surely his collar must feel the firm hand of the appropriate authorities soon.

This is a cracking hostelry with a goodly selection of real ales, pleasant atmosphere and very good food. Worth seeking out.

On recent visits the ale has been decidedly off - what is happening at the good ship Victory? Has someone taken their hand off the tiller?

The atmosphere and the decor is sterile unfortunately, although on our visit the Rev James was acceptable and the barmaid chatty. Not really enthusiastic about eating here.

Brilliant pub with a fine selection of real ales. Good crisps too - Tyrells all the way from Herefordshire. But girls, watch out for the local character called Bonko - he's only four feet tall with weird staring eyes. Drinks lager then falls over.

The Rhydspence Inn, Whitney on Wye
The Rhydspence deserves its reputation for good food - had an excellent Monkfish Tagine here the other week and the Robinsons Ale is kept in excellent condition.

By rights this should be a good pub. When I have visited it appeared empty except for some bloke who had his six kids with him climbing all over the threadbare furniture. Not 'over the moon' at all.

Kington is a really weird place. I saw a photograph of a crowd of locals on the wall and there only seemed to be three faces between them - and one of those was the dog. Add to that the corrupt town council and Kington appears to be one of those Wild West outposts you want to get out of as quickly as possible.

Nirvana. A wonderful pub with gloriously eccentric fun-loving clientele. A Mecca for real ale fans (can you say that nowadays?)

What key can open any lock - yes, it's a pikey! And the Grapes is an even worse joke than that one. Jimbo got it right - it is clear that this pub is not even interested in providing decent beer which is a criminal waste of a good location.

The Kilvert's Hotel, Hay on Wye
An excellent pub with a great range of real ales and ciders - serves really good fish and chips (although the service can be a bit slow)and the bar staff are friendly.

This pub is really over-rated. Yes it is attractive enough, and the Red Setter with the cold nose always has a friendly welcome. But the food is pedestrian - not even real chips - but you should be able to get a decent pint.

The Tarrington Arms, Tarrington
Whatever happened to Jimbo Smith? Has he moved? Has he choked on one too many bad pints? Whatever, I miss his reviews because he was always spot on. This pub is friendly, cares about its ale and the quality of the food. Worth having a reasonably priced meal in the bar - if you can get in - it is very popular and deservedly so.

Not good. The food offered is sub standard portion control mush. Not worth stopping to have a look.
30 Jun 2007 15:22
Go on then, I will bother to post a review. This pub has absolutely nothing to offer. Crap food, no real ale, no real atmosphere. There, now you know.
30 Jun 2007 15:08
The young bar staff don't really know what they are doing and the pub struggles to keep a decent pint. A great shame because people were expecting more after it re-opened.

The Lichfield Vaults, Hereford
Definitely worth looking it - sometimes the Vaults has a great range of real ales - and other times, strangely, not much to offer - but if it can get the guest beers in it is definitely one of the real pubs to be found in Hereford.

Well known as a hang out for the local racists - not worth looking at

Admittedly the decor is naff but the range of real beers and ciders make this one of the best pubs in Hereford. Shame the little dog is now spinning in its grave. Usually good bands playing.

Know locally as the Grim Dragon (try staying there overnight and you'll think Ryan Air aren't so bad after all). Still frequented by Hereford pensioners who can't remember why they keep coming there.

The Lichfield Vaults, Hereford
Comfortable pub with (usually) a very good choice of ace ale. One of the few good pubs in Hereford city centre.

The Bunch of Carrots, Hampton Bishop
Always good beer on tap and comfortable surroundings - but the food's a bit hit and miss. OK if you like a bog standard carvery - and don't order a turkey sandwich - it comes without butter and tastes like cardboard. The steak pie is usually OK.

The Wellington, Wellington
A great shame. My ancestor the Duke would be very disappointed with his namesake pub in Wellington. Just as the Flavour of Herefordshire accolades were being nailed to the wall at the front of house, the standards in the kitchen fell through the floor. On a recent visit the chef managed to dress lamb as mutton by seriously overcooking it and foisted on us boiled potatoes instead of the roasted variety boasted in the menu. The poor old Wellington has met its Waterloo.
