The Woodman, Ware

A quaint country pub visited several times before with a good reputation for real ale straight from the barrel. Revisited a couple of weeks ago to take advantage of the Pie and a Pint night. St. Austell Proper Job and steak and kidney pie went down a treat.
It's pleasing to see that this pub is still in the GBG for 2011.

Sad news. Nigel has departed from this established real ale pub. Wonder who is coming in? Hope they keep the ales as well as Nigel did.

Great pub now that Ruby and Steve are back. Well kept ales, good food and a really welcoming atmosphere.
I will be back.

This place has now closed.

Sadly I understand this pub us closing. Does anyone know whether it is true or not? Great pub and great landlords.

The Black Horse, Hertford

Shame this pub has gone downhill since previous tenants left in July.
Is extremely dirty inside and smells to match, especially the toilets.
Beer now only average so only had the one pint instead of the usual four or five. Had to fight my way through the crowd of smokers outside the front door to leave. Won't be back in a hurry. Pleased to see the other Horse is reopening so will be drinking there me thinks.

Great news. An end of Summer Beer Fest!! 19-21st September, with local musicians providing entertainment during the evenings. Anyone remember Woodmanstock? That used to be a superb event.
Anyway, this pub appears to be going from strength to strength since new tenants arrived from the Black Horse in Hertford. Pub looks cleaner and friendlier (both bars have been redecorated!) and the food is good. They are serving evening meals now but I believe it is only Wednesday to Saturday. Stale rolls at the bar have been replaced by superb pork pies!!!
I shall be back for the Fest!!

Recently enjoyed a pub lunch here. Great ales, served on gravity from the cellar. Garden immense. Lovely "olde worlde" charm about this place. Shame I couldn't get to the mini beer festival this weekend. Looked interesting.
Roll on the summer when the garden will be the ideal place to sit and sup.....

Sportsman, Hertford

Just for the record, this pub is now closed 'for refurbishment'. Understand that it was closed for serving too many under age drinkers on too many occasions. Local news reviews confirm it.
No idea if it is to re-open or not.

The Bridge House, Hertford

This pub nows appears to have closed. At least that is the impression one gets from the 'no lights at night' situation. Jayzee has left and the pub has gone downhill even more. Shame

The Quarry Gate, Headington

Used to enjoy coming here a few years ago, but now? No real ale. No Buvar (run out). Barman cannot pour a pint of Guinness to save his life, and wasn't exactly welcoming either.
TVs everywhere. Not my idea of a real pub at all. Real shame.

Woodstock Arms, Oxford

This pub has changed a lot since my last visit. Can still be improved upon. Food good. Real ales even better. Look forward to returning when new licensees take over in a few months to see what happens.

The Snug Bar, Hertford

This pub is now a no smoking cocktail bar called The Snug. Food reasonable, but as with the drinks, very expensive.
Top tip - don't sit near the patio doors if it is cold, because you will definitely feel the draught as the smokers go in and out.

The Silver Fox, Hertford Heath

Pleasant enough pub. Was recommended to eat here but was sorely disappointed.
Billed as Sea Bass, new potatoes and salad, turned up as
sea bass, half cooked chips and peas saturated in foul tasting margarine, on a plate that was far too small for the length of the fish. even diagonally. Beer was a little incipid as if on its last legs. Won't rush back.

The Old Barge, Hertford

A group of friends attended the recent beer festival. Great selection of ales. Compliments to the new management. Unfortunately, the sleeve of my leather jacket stuck to the tacky grime on the bar. Would suggest a good polish as the order of the day. However, would definitely go back.

The Black Horse, Hertford

Have just been back after nearly a year. This pub entertained a birthday bash I attended. Packed to the rafters and nothing was a problem for the pleasant staff. Good buffet too.
To me, the Black Horse is getting better.

The White Horse, Hertford

A superb real ale pub just west of town centre. Landlord a 'good egg'. Great food. 2006 Good Beer Guide entrant and I am sure it will be in the 2007 edition. Holds fantastic beer festivals twice a year. Cannot be faulted. Well worth a return visit. Don't forget to try Muriel's pickled eggs whilst you are there.

The Bridge House, Hertford

Although this pub has improved in recent months, I still can't get to grips with McMullens beers. Don't think Happy Hours are a good idea. Seen too many bad results of happy hour drinking.
By the way - jayzee (recommendation of 20th June) is the landlord!!

The Old Cross Tavern, Hertford

Great beers - always changing. Good food too. Unfortunately pub is very smokey and has an almost unfriendly atmosphere. Can't get near the bar at times. Change of staff seems to have upset some of the old regulars who are now departing for pastures new. Great shame.

The Black Horse, Hertford

Superb community pub in old part of Hertford. Just gained entry in 2006 Good Beer Guide. Good home made food. Excellent Sunday lunches - plenty of meat on our plates. Would visit again.
