Buzbys, St Helens

Cheap beer attracts the dregs of humanity for all day drinking. Just not nice, so if you've got any decency about you leave it to those who need it.

The Bottle and Glass, Rainford

Very good for food, does reasonable beer too.

The Abbey, Dentons Green

Benefited hugely from a refurb a couple of years ago, went from being a dive to being a modern pub with decent beer.

Griffin, Eccleston

Food pub, okayish beer, clean and comfortable, but nothing special.

The Bird In The Hand, St Helens

Not as good as it was before it was theme pubbed, but fills a gap for those happy with generic lagers noted below.

The Black Bull, St Helens

Has been going downhill for years, gets packed on matchdays, other than that you're better off going somewhere else.

The Turks Head, St Helens

Excellent range of beers, but beware the local chavs. Last time I went in I had an excellent pint, but suffered taunts from pissed up chavs who'd been drinking all afternoon. The manageress obviously didn't want to intervene as they were regulars.

Well worth going in, but it's better if you're not on your own, and watch out for the drunken chavs.

Glass House, St Helens

Decent Wetherspoons, better range of beers than most places.

15 Jan 2008 14:50

The Sportsmans Inn, St Helens

Was very run down before it closed, beers were poor and the clients tended towards the mentally ill and dispossesed.

15 Jan 2008 14:49

Bar Java, St Helens

Generic beers, but better than most of the bars nearby.

15 Jan 2008 14:48

The Dalli Bar, St Helens

Trendy bar (well by St Helens standards) for the older generation, nothing special, if you're looking for that pop round the corner to Beechams where they do the best range of real ales in town.

Joker's Bar, St Helens

Avoid, simple as.

15 Jan 2008 14:45

The Brasserie Chalon, St Helens

Basic pub for council office workers in the vicinity.

15 Jan 2008 14:44

Beechams Bar and Brewery, St Helens

Basic layout is more than made up for by the excellent range of real ales. This is where to come if you really value good beer.

The Barley Mow, Tandridge

Decent pub, but another one that actually went backwards with a refurb. Food is nice, but is pricey for the small portions. They've gone too much for the gastropub market and neglected what was great about it in the first place.

Beers are still decent though.

Hopefully it will work its way back to what it was a couple of years ago.

The George, Old Oxted

Reasonably well kept pub with decent Hall and Woodhouse beers available. Refit a couple of years ago set it back a bit, spoiled the homely feel by tring to make it more trendy. Staff can be surly at times, but it's worth a pint on the way to the much better Crown across the street.

The Old Bell, Old Oxted

Nice food pub, but has a bit of a chain feel about it. Most of the time it's reasonable, but if you catch it on an off day then you might never go back. Largely relies on generic beers, but usually has a decent guest ale on, if it's Greene King IPA give it a miss and go straight to the Crown.

The Crown, Old Oxted

Best of the pubs in Old Oxted, good selection of beers and very nice food. Can't go wrong here. Only improvement would be to have slightly more comfortable seating.

15 Jan 2008 13:24

Old Surrey Hounds, Caterham

Well kept pub, even if some of the regulars are a bit rough around the edges. Has character, even if it's not as nice as the Valley nearby. Generally have a couple of real ales on and the usual selection of generic beers.

Worth stopping for a pint if in the area, but not somewhere to go out of your way for.

The Valley, Caterham

Nice pub, normally have one decent real ale on (unfortunately they sometimes have London Pride which takes the gloss off). Usually quite quiet unless they've got a band on. Bus stop is just opposite, and is about 300 metres walk from the train station (too long for lazy gits though).

15 Jan 2008 13:19

The Crown and Sceptre, South Croydon

Nice little pub featuring the Fullers range.

15 Jan 2008 13:13

The Earl of Eldon, South Croydon

Bog standard pub, shame it's a GK pub as it means that any real ale is the repulsive GK IPA and other than that it's generic cooking lagers.

15 Jan 2008 13:10

The Red Deer, South Croydon

Been in once, generic beers aimed at the chav end of the market. Clean enough, just doesn't offer anything unless you're into cooking lager and tracksuits.

15 Jan 2008 13:08

The Purley Arms, South Croydon

A good, down to earth, no frills pub, with well kept beers at good prices. Usually have a guest ale on alongside a reliable pint of Directors and GK IPA (who drinks muck like that?). It is a bit of a locals pub, but it's not intimidating, the worst that will happen is taht they'll serve a regular even though you've been waiting longer.

15 Jan 2008 13:06

The Jolly Farmers, Purley

It's a nice enough pub, with a good selection of beers, including some decent real ales. Pity some of the clients are a bit chavvy, but I suppose there's not much that can be done about that.
