The Red Lion, Handcross

An excellent setting and I must say I have enjoyed the food here. However, as Mossop observes, sadly the service at the bar is at best indifferent.

Rubicon Bar, Surbiton

Though narrow of aspect, an offering not narrow of mind; enlightingening for those who enjoy and those who do not. The allegedly immiscible qualities of modernity and anitiquity here merge.

A cool place well worth a visit.

The Royal Oak, Guildford

I'm not a regular but have been in a few times to kill time, read a book etc. The staff do chat with their mates but never fail to spring to action. I've always found them as friendly as I'd want staff to be. The beer is good, the juke box excellent and location by the graveyard perfect - especially on a dark wet windy day.

The Sloe Bar, Victoria Station

Small. Mostly attentive and friendly staff. Perfectly placed for a swifty before the train. It fulfills it's limited function as a pre or post train watering hole. Clearly not a place for a night out.

The Shakespeare, Victoria

Overall an uninspiring pub but somewhat redeemed by the good nature and assiduity of the (albeit in some cases inexperienced) staff. Not as rough and tumble as it was a few years ago - the bouncers are well on top of their game. Always good for a pre-train scoop of the black stuff.

The Old Bank of England, Fleet Street

Well worth a look if just for the decor. The staff do not fall into the obsequious category, but that's a blessing. Stocks a good range of beers.

Ye Olde Cock Tavern, Fleet Street

Irrepressible, indefatigable, good natured landlady and staff. Sadly the positive vibe is confined to that side of the bar. There is a good variety of guest beers.

The Tipperary, Fleet Street

Narrower than a narrow boat specially constructed to navigate narrow ways, it's an endearing little spot nonetheless. Admittedly not to everyone's liking but that itself is a strength. Small; the tone and feel flux dramatically with the flux of the crowd.

Well run; well staffed. The Polish staff a boon.
