The Crown Hotel, Lynton

Went in here for the first time this week for lunch. We were greeted by a very smart man behind the bar. The interior is a little shabby and needs some updating, but it is clean. I ordered a pint of Proper Job, and as it was the first to be served that day he pulled off a fair quantity from the pipes before he filled my glass. The beer was excellent. We ordered lunch; a ham baguette and a cheese sandwich, expecting to be given just that, but they came on large plates with very generous helpings of both salad and fries. The baguette was 4.95 and the sandwich 4.50. My baguette contained plenty of very good home cooked ham. I noticed that the barman (who may be the licensee) greeted everyone who entered, the majority, like us, appeared to be visitors to the town. The toilets were spotlessly clean. There is a notice outside stating that Tristan and Naomi welcome you to the Crown. In view of an earlier review on this site referring to Martin & Bev it would appear that there has been a further change of licencees recently. Having been unhappy with previous visits to the well known pub down the hill at Lynmouth we will certainly be returning to the Crown very soon.

The Chichester Arms, Mortehoe

The previous comment from johnthechef should be viewed with suspicion, as he refers to a juke box in the pub. I have been drinking here regularly for the last nine years and there has not been a juke box in the pub during that period. Perhaps he is referring to another pub and has got confused.

Pedn-Olva Hotel, St Ives

Just had a week in St Ives. After a very disappointing lunch, poor beer and overcharging in the Sloop. we had lunch here three times.
I can't fault the beer, service or food, and can't agree with an earlier comment stating that it was very very expensive. A pint of Tribute and a half of lager was 4.95, fairly average I think. And a rump steak with chips and salad was less than 11. Lovely views and very pleasant staff, plus free nespapers to read. We shall return.

The William IV, Truro

Had lunch here with my wife last week, whilst visiting Truro. Quite honestly, the best pub lunch we have had for a long time. Friendly staff, and the beer was well kept. I had a very nice pint of Proper Job, and would have had more if I hadn't had to drive.
Very highly recommended.

The Sloop Inn, St Ives

This pub appears to be trading on a past reputation it no longer deserves.
Five years ago when last there I was overcharged twice.
Last week I had a very poor pint of Speckled Hen, my wife had an even worse half-pint of Carlsberg (for which we were charged the price of a pint), and the food was very average.
I will certainly be visiting St Ives again, but not the Sloop.

The Stag and Hounds, Churchill

Called in here for sandwiches and a drink after leaving Bristol Airport and on the way home to Devon.
The staff were pleasant but my wife's cheddar cheese sandwich was, she said, rubbish, and she left most of it.
I asked for a ham sandwich with no salad. It came with lettuce which was wet and half the sandwich had been put on top of the lettuce, which made it soggy.
The bread in both sandwiches was not fresh.
I will never call in there again.

Bar Electric, Woolacombe

Formerly known as Westbeach, has had some refurbishment and is now under the same ownership as the excellent Electric restaurant next door. More a young persons bar than a traditional pub, does not (yet) sell real ale, but the drinks are reasonably priced. Staff are friendly and there are some comfortable seating areas inside. Outside seating is a real suntrap in the afternoon, and there are views of the sea. The food is said to be extremely good.

The Tides Inn, Woolacombe

This pub, formerly known as the Golden Hind, which closed before Christmas, re-opened recently after an expensive refit. All the furniture is new, the carpet and curtains are gone, the gents toilet has been refurbished and the bar has been shortened by a few feet. Unfortunately, as has been apparent in other pubs that have turned to wooden floors and no curtains, the noise bouncing off the walls and floors can make conversation difficult. The pool table and dartboards have gone, to make room for more seating in the restaurant area, which has been described as looking like a caf. The food menu appears to be reasonably priced with a fair selection, and I have heard positive reports about the quality of the meals. On tap last week were Tribute and Proper Job. Some of the drinks are more expensive than the Red Barn just down the road, and a number of drinkers who were regular customers at the Golden Hind are using the Red Barn and Bar Electric rather than The Tides Inn.
The outside seating area is popular and has great views out to sea.
Its early days yet, and it will be interesting to see how things go in the future, but I think they need to attract back the regular local customers they have lost, or they could find business a bit quiet when there are no holidaymakers to rely on.

The Hunter's Inn, Parracombe

The last two reviews are absolutely correct. This place is a run down dump, with only the surroundings and views to make anyone want to go there. Kitchen staff can't cope and the food is very poor - the beer nothing special either. I suggest it be avoided until the licensee has changed.

The Rock Inn, Georgeham

Since my previous comment in August I have returned to have lunch on three occasions and it improves each time. On my most recent visit there were four real ales on sale - Abbot, Doom Bar, Timothy Taylor and Tribute. The London Pride was off - presumably a change of barrels. On a cold day the pub was comfortably warm without being hot. Free newspapers were available to read. The food was absolutely excellent - all in my party left clean plates. The steak and (Doom Bar) ale pie was packed with large and very tender chunks of beef. The gammon was the thickest I have ever seen - must have been nearly half an inch, and was tender. A vegetarian meal could not be faulted. A few weeks ago we had locally caught rabbit which was also brilliant. The portions are always a good size. On a cold October day the pub was fairly busy with plenty of meals coming out from the kitchen. If they stick to their current standards we will return again and again.

The Ship Aground, Mortehoe

The previous comment from bobbones is offensive in his description of the bar staff at the Chich. If anyone is stupid it is bobbones who has spelt Mortehoe incorrectly, and failed to use capital letters for the names of pubs.

The Rock Inn, Georgeham

This lovely village pub has just had a welcome change of management, and is in the middle of a few changes. The pool table has gone, and the suntrap front garden has been extended to take more tables. Had some very nice Abbott ale and some good food a few days ago.
Early days yet, but I think it will soon move on from pretty good to excellent.
