Lewinnick Lodge, Newquay

We have just got back from 5 nights in Newquay, and this was the only pub/restaurant we went to twice, because we enjoyed it so much. Just the right balance of delicious food, good presentation/decor/layout, varied daily specials, friendly service and the most amazing views from the Pentire headland. Go about an hour before sunset, have a drink or two on the terrace (indoors if wet...) and watch the sun go down. Then move inside for dinner. Recommend booking for the restaurant at weekends.

The Compton Arms, Islington

Agree with Mr. Monkfish, don't tell everyone. We don't go to this pub as much as we used to as we've moved a bit further away. I admit, every time I go in I expect the regulars to turn and stare/mutter, but it's not like that at all - it's friendly in a low-key way. Total relief from the hell of Upper Street.
And it will forever be linked in my mind with watching Liverpool win the European Cup in May 2005.

The Talbot, Kingsland

It's OK - nice enough pub, shame about the regulars who can be faintly annoying. Hence it didn't become our local although we live close-ish by. I'd go to the Northgate instead if you're near Southgate Road. No cocktails in the Northgate, but better food and wine list.

The Bull, Islington

Have had some good times, some bad times and some quite surreal times in the this pub. Good times included cosy catch-up chats with friends/other half in the days when they had little booths/dividers between the tables at the back. Bad times included some bunch of aggressive randoms hurling lemons around on a Saturday night (you'd think the bar staff would have taken the bowl of lemons off the bar after a while, but hey, I did in the end). Surreal times included spending a couple of hours one afternoon sitting next to a group of, well, students perhaps (?), who were painting eggs.
Better than some pubs on Upper Street, but probably best avoided on a weekend unless you like fighting.

Sosho, Moorgate

If I never set foot in Sosho Match again, it will be too soon. Terrible aircon, way way too noisy (even for an after work drink), takes hours to get served, awful beers, staff rude, generally tedious. I think this is what you get when the clientele are more worried about pulling and what they look like than what they're drinking or communicating with each other - comment below about someone throwing up over herself sums it up really. Perhaps I'm just getting old, but my heart sinks whenever someone organises leaving/birthday/recruitment drinks here.

The Northgate, Islington

My local and we love it. Friendly staff, good atmosphere, outdoor seating in summer (though Southgate Road can be a bit noisy). Don't eat here that often, though the food is usually pretty good. Good wine selection too.
