Plough, Sheffield

Excellent Bradfield Brewery ales - Farmers blonde for me . The food was very good. I had the usual Steak pie and the menu indicated a good choice of traditional pub grub. Very reasonable price and good portions as well! We called in early on a Saturday evening - all the tables were booked from 19:00 onwards so well worth phoning ahead. Really worth a visit.

The Crown Inn, Leeds

Nice looking pub. Good local support so never empty. Friendly staff. TT Landlord, CD Golden Pippin + guest beer. Food mid range price and quite edible. Small seating areas front and back - however, beware of smokers! Well worth a visit.

The New Inn, Appletreewick

The attraction of the pub was that it served food all day so we could eat straight after a walk. Amongst the available beers were Old Peculiar and Black Sheep. I try to avoid both of these but in this case I tried a Black Sheep which was much better than expected. The locally made Chinhook was OK but not to my taste. There was hand pulled strong cider (looked relatively clear) and a selection of bottled beers also available. Other reviews refer to the good presentation of the beer.
Food was quite acceptable and our group sampled the Steak + Ale Pie, the Game Pie and the lamb shank. The pies were a bit 'wet' with gravy and portions a little on the small size. Otherwise AOK and reasonably priced compared to many of the Dales pubs.
I'll certainly revisit and maybe sample the weekday walkers menu

Blackwell Ox Inn, Middlesbrough

Bit disappointing. Had high expectations based on recommendations. But turned out to be run-of-the-mill and a bit pricey to match - especially the beer. The pub has the record for being the most I've ever spent on a pint! Was at least 30p per pint more than expected. Good beer, average food would be my summary.

The George, Easingwold

Saturday evening. We'd arrived early so looked in some of the other pubs on the main St. Although OK for drinking, none of them looked like the sort of place to sit down and have a meal. The George is the opposite. Despite it having good beer, its just not the atmosphere to sit down and have a drink. Perfect for a meal though (and of course a drink before, during and after a meal!!!).
So if you're in the area looking for a comfortable pub for a bite to eat - its worth a visit. Prices are top end of range and quality above average but not quite matching the price.
Started serving food at 18:00 and the tables pretty much fully occupied by 19:00.

The Queen Catherine, Osmotherley

Another early evening visit at the end of February 2013. Rugby Six Nations on the TV and it had attracted a good crowd. We had a table in the bar side of the large open plan lounge. My only criticism would be the rush of cold air every time the door was opened. At the restaurant end, it appeared much quieter and a lovely looking open fire to warm up on. Beer was very good - Thwaites Wainwright was my choice. Food best described as typical pub grub and very reasonably priced. About nine pounds for the Steak and Onion pie served with a good ration of chips and vegetables. Recommended for its good beer, ample food and no nonsense service.

The Cadeby Inn, Cadeby

Good venue. Sit outside when weather permits or enjoy inside a traditional country pub - well thats the theory anyway. Reality is a bit plastic inside and very commercialised with weddings and function rooms. After saying that a welcoming atmosphere and good service (even with a wedding in the function room when I visited)
Choice of hand pulled beers. I opted for a blonde which was good
Food was pretty good although top end on price.
Despite the negatives, I will visit again and recommended

The Slaters Arms, Bradley

Saturday evening visit at about 18:30. Too early for eaters but quite a few tables reserved for later. Beer choice was Hobgoblin or Landlord. I went for the Hobgoblin but was limited to a couple of pints with a meal because on driving duties.
Certainly recommend the beer.
So what about the food? I have to report reasonable pricing (sub 10 for a beef and ale pie in October 2012) and certainly good value. Nothing special but good pub grub.
Worth a visit.

The Brown Cow, Ackworth

Located at the top of the Village puts this pub a mile or so away from the other Ackworth pubs. Maybe a poor location so you'll need something special to attract people - the surrounding houses don't look like those frequented by pub goers. In recent years its been open and closed several times suggesting the wrong offering? So, mid week, June 2012 and a quick pint whilst travelling. Six thirty and already some tables occupied by diners. A welcome pint of TT landlord whilst reading the paper and watching the world (and the food) go by. So I can certainly recommend the beer. Didn't try the food but certainly the number of diners would indicate satisfied customers. Good luck to the latest Landlord!!

The Malt Shovel, Hovingham

Sunday, near Castle Howard in Summer. A formula for a busy pub. Luckily, Euro football and the poor English summer came to our rescue. We had a couple of pints in the bar (watching the football) then had no problem getting a table in the dining room. Choice of hand-pulled beers - I tried the Black Sheep which I usually avoid due to inconsistency. This time it was fine.
Food served quickly ( we were the first to order after all) by friendly staff. I had the Steak Pie which I must say was only about average. The freshly made chips and (not over boiled) veg certainly made up for it. Reasonable food + drink, easy to find, ample car park and friendly service make this pub worth supporting.

The Gnu Inn, North Newbald

Saturday evening visit (April 2012). Arrived 17:30 to a cosy pub with a good mix of drinkers and early eaters.
Choice of beer and I tried the bitters from Black Sheep and Bombadier. Black Sheep I find to be very variable and in this case was only average. The Bombadier is a very different taste and was quite acceptable.
A reasonable menu for pub grub - nothing fancy and good portions. Choice of freshly cooked veg and well presented chips. I had the traditional fish + chips and, apart from the watery mushy peas, was most acceptable. Price still sub 10 (Spring 2012) for the standard offerings of pie, gammon or chicken etc.
So, well worth calling in if you are passing by!

The Old Bells, Campsall

Spring 2012 - Excellent village location with car park. Check before you visit as its currently closed down!!!

The Burghwallis, Burghwallis

Only a short drive from the A1, quiet rural setting and ample parking - a winning combination if things are done right. In this case its OK but not really worth a special trip to visit.
We arrived about 19:30 on a Thursday evening. First impression is of tired decor and a locals pub - maybe half a dozen people in the large lounge area. Food was limited to a carvery which was due to close at 20:00. Surprisingly the veg was still relatively undamaged and the meat options did look edible - apart from the skin on the dishes that included a sauce. After saying that the taste was good and the price an excellent 4-95 - approaching half price compared with other pubs in the area.
A beer drinker would be disappointed by the range of ales - John Smiths being the only viable option.
Finally, I'm told its a haven for pensioners early evening. Recommended if you want a quiet pint and cheap carvery!

The Old White Bear, Crosshills

Maybe I visited on a good day but my rating would be simply a real gem of a pub. Excellent beer brewed on the premises. Good food although the specials had all been taken by the time we arrived (which was pretty early - about 18:00).
Surprisingly high number of drinkers in the bar for such an early hour on a Saturday - must be a thirsty lot in Crosshills.
Well worth a visit

The Blue Bell Inn, Wentbridge

We visited early on a Saturday evening (Jan 2012). A busy pub nowadays so a good idea to book if you want to have a meal. Good food and generous portions. Timothy Taylors landlord available so all is recommended.
Top end of price range but well worth a visit.
The pub was pretty full by 18:30 - just about 100% eating - not a drinkers pub

The Dick Hudsons, Bingley

I last visited Dick Hudsons about 30 years ago. As you'd expect its changed a bit! Gone, the plain pub and the Tetleys handpulled beer. Now a busy all day eating palace with tables that really should be booked before turning up. The attraction was all day food as we finished walking about 15:30. Arriving at about 16;30 on a Sunday afternoon just before Xmas, every table was occupied. We enjoyed a pint of the Barnsley sessions beer and were shown to a table after about 20 minutes. Service was friendly and our order taken within 5 minutes. I chose a Cheese / ham / leek pie which arrived after 20 minutes. Not bad, but I always think pub pies are let down by puff pastry which doesn't seem to be able to stand the oven abuse of mass catering - it was burnt.
Reasonable value and not yet broken the 10 barrier for a typical main course - a far cry from the over-rated and over-priced Busfield Arms nearby (Dec 2011).
So, call in and give it a try!

14 Dec 2011 22:02

The Dog and Gun Inn, Oxenhope

We arrived early Saturday evening and the pub was busy with a lot of tables reserved. The landlord (seemed a jolly chap) found us a table in the dining room which was reserved for 20:00 - giving us plenty of time to eat. First tip is to book if you want a meal at peak time. The TT Landlord beer was good - I'd noticed one or two comments about the beer in other reviews but I found it most acceptable. Food quality was good but I thought very expensive for the quality and quantity. I had the Steak and Ale pie - the pie was small and the plate included 7 chips for 11:95!
Finally, if you are opposed to blood sports then don't visit during the autumn months as the pub is used as a base for local shoots.
