This place has a split between public bar and lounge area. 4 ales on when I was in- Black Sheep Best Bitter, St Austell Tribute, Oakham Scarlet Macaw and Rudgate Ruby Mild. Some random keg beers that I had never heard of before as well. An okay place, bit bland really, this place is actually a bit disappointing as it looks like a traditional pub from the outside but the inside is totally different. The food is reasonably priced. This place is alright of you want somewhere in York that isn't as busy as the places where most of the tourists will go.

A rather workmanlike place, the exterior is inviting but the interior does not live up to the promise. A couple of beers available. Nothing wrong with The Gillygate, it just doesn't compare well to its nearby competitiors.

Rather undistinguished with just the Copper Dragon ale on when I last visited. I have eaten here and wasn't very impressed, but it was some time ago. There's nothing greatly wrong with it, but the Gillygate does not leave much of a lasting impression, particularly when considering that there are a great deal more interesting and quality alternatives to be found in any direction you care to walk.

If you are thinking of visiting this place FORGET IT ! No atmosphere (we were the only people in mid Sat afternoon), no TV, no music, and certainly no smiles from the grumpy chap behind the bar. Like fools we ordered food, BIG MISTAKE unless you enjoy rock hard burnt baguette's (which my girlfriend left 50%) or fish & chips where the fish is 95% burnt batter, with very little fish inside, served with cold mushy peas, quite obvious everything on the very limited menu is microwaved. The characterless chap behind the bar was even less amused at seeing the food we had left, but didn't ask why or even offer us a refund. There are some great pubs & restaurants in york, but definately not this place.

Popped in to see what this place was like. Was nice olde style pub with two separate rooms. 2 real ale pulls: Hobgoblin and J Smith. Preferring the good Wychwood ale, I found the Hobgoblin in good shape and the place was very hospitable. The bathroom was clean..but cccoooooollllddddd when we went. I'd stop in again.
