Packed on a recent Saturday night visit. Lots of tv screens which of course attracts a certain type of person. A couple of ales available but most punters were lager swillers. Not somewhere I'd recommend.

On the to do list... Arrived, looked through the window and saw that every empty table was piled high with dirty glasses. Duely off putting so went next door to the Pied Bull instead.

Called in here after a trip to the Pied Bull next door. Both these pubs have been on my mental to-do list for some time. On entering there is a long bar to the right hand side of the pub, and two sets of six hand pumps (ales are duplicated across the two banks).

Initially it looks like an impressive selection, but on closer inspection one pump was off, two were Wainwright, one was Greene King IPA, one Hobgoblin, leaving only one which was a bit different. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy all those ales, but it's nice to have something new. Shingle Shells (3.9%) by Adnams was the other ale on offer, and the one I went for, setting me back £2.60 which I thought was a bit of a bargain for a Chester city centre pub. A decent refreshing pint it was too.

On my early evening visit the pub was not packed, but getting busy. Plenty of seating in front of the bar and to the rear.

All in all a pleasant experience, and if I were to go again I would be hoping to see something a bit different on the ale selection front.

Nicholsons pub which offers their usually selection of real ale. Lovely pub and well kept ales. Also recommend the Pied Bull next door.

Pleasant, clean, traditional style city centre pub situated next door to another great pub The Pied Bull. Nicholson's Pale Ale is their own beer which is made by St Austell Brewery. I think there were about 6 real ales available on my visit. Apparently the building dates from around 1600 & the cellar is haunted. Worth a visit.

The usual Nicholsons presentation which is good. Good beer, good food, good staff. Keep it up.

This is now a Nicholsons pub, although Im not sure how long that has been the case. It looks as though it may have been recently renovated, and the friendly barman said that they were expanding rapidly northwards. Its certainly the first one I have come across outside of London.

The flooring in the main part of the bar is polished wood, with some tiling around the bar. The pub has a few wooden partitions to break up the space a little, and these are painted a khaki green colour. The paintwork is a green/brown shade and there are various black and white photos on the wall. To the rear is a carpeted restaurant area. There was a solitary plasma stuck up in a corner, but this was off on a recent Friday night visit.

Food was probably the standard Nicholsons fayre, but was decent enough, if perhaps a tad on the expensive side. We enjoyed our Salmon en croute and Cod wrapped in Parma Ham. Staff all seemed friendly and helpful, especially the young fair haired barman who remembered from a casual conversation when ordering food, who was having each dish when he bought it to the table.

Beers on tap were Brew Dog Alice Potter, Salopian Darwins Origin, Brains Young Reverend and Oakleaf Brewerys Hole Hearted. There were a further three pump handles on the bar, but these were not in use. Ciders were Strongbow and Kingston Press.

DO NOT expect an 8oz steak if you order one. It will be around the 5oz mark if mine was anything to go by.
DO NOT expect a reaction beyond "Oh dear." should you choose to complain.
Beer okay.
A pleasant barman was the only highlight of this, the last visit.

The Red Lion is currently closed due to a major refurbishment. It will re-open on the 24th February 2011. It will no longer be a value pub, it changes to a quality Nicholsons food and cask led outlet..... thank god for what will be great standards in a fantastic outlet!!

I've been going here for years but the current bar staff seem to be rude and unhelpful. Anyone else find the soft drinks a bit on the watery side??

Cheep ale in the week with lots of eye candy. just a bit warm on a summers day
bigdunc00 - 16 Jun 2005 13:20
Do a good deal on beer & spirits in the week, plus you may well meet some interesting Turks. One of the barmen could take a dislike to you as he did me and bar you because his girlfriend is obviously not satisfied with his masculinity, ah well.
