user reviews of Edwards Bar, Hammersmith

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I visited today and was very impressed. Nicholson's have done a great job refurbishing the pub (mostly by adding partitions) yet still retaining the marvellous original interior. My pint of London Pride was good and the Steak and Kidney pie I had was both delicious and good value.
Dave_Home - 18 Feb 2010 14:03
I live just around the corner from this pub and always hated it as Edwards. My wife and I were looking forward to a marked change after the refurbishment. The inerior is now both contemporary and stylish. Music is good (possibly too loud at times) and the selection of ales is to be commended. Unfortunately, on two out of three visits I have been disappointed by a bad pint.
Last night (Sat 9th Jan) we dropped in for a meal (they don't take reservations - I stopped and asked earlier in the day). It was 7.30 and we were abruptly told on entering the upstairs dining room that the wait for food was 30 minutes. We ordered drinks anyway. I had a pint of Doombar served at the table in a jug, which I prefer, but I did not notice the colour. After taking an enthusiastic mouthful and swallowing the lot, I quickly examined the pint which was clearly 1 part beer, 1 part cleaning fluid. I asked for and received and alternative pint. 10 miuntes later we were able to attract the attention of the harassed waitress and tried to order, only to be told the kitchen was no longer taking orders as they were so busy. It REALLY was not that busy. We, like three other couples, decided to leave and go elsewhere. In relation to the dodgy pint - I can't leave the house today :-(
Lots of potential, especially as the crowd in this pub seems to have improved but failing right now.
Hammersmith32 - 10 Jan 2010 12:15
I can now report that The Swan is a marked improvement on its predecessor. Lively, pleasant dcor and attentive staff. Served a pint of Doom in a proper glass mug & it was brought to my table. The pint itself was average but since its early days, Ill allow that. Ill also allow for the unnecessary volume of the music which threatened to drown out any conversation! I expect this to do well.
E1_Norton - 17 Dec 2009 13:44
Be interested to see how the latest incarnation works out. The staff always seemed to be under pressure from some of the louder punters on occasion. And I was not impressed by the "lady" who disappeared with my beer money the last time I was there. Can't trust anyone these days.
E1_Norton - 15 Dec 2009 17:42
Can't rate this because it hasn't re-opened yet as its new, or should that be old, incarnation as the Swan (Nicholsons). However, I walk past it every day and it would appear it is ready to open very, very soon. The traditional interior has been retained and, believe it or not, the builders have actually been installing new wooden panelling and partitions rather than ripping them out. Food would appear to feature but I would imagine that this will mainly take place on the first floor.

I saw the beer being delivered last week and counted 10 handpumps on the bar. Beers I recognised (I walk past every day) through the window were: Bombardier, Doom Bar, Timmy Taylors Landlord and Golden Best - there are others but my eyesight isn't what it was. I expect it to open this week although there's nothing to say when it will open. Once it is I shall post a more comprehensive review but the signs look encouraging so far.

"Bring back the Swan, though how likely is that?"
Edwards is now closed for refurbishment and will be re-opening as......The Swan! I really hope they don't ruin the traditional pub interior in the process.
Dave_Home - 26 Nov 2009 15:24
It's Edwards. I suppose it's adequate enough for a drink during the day or early evening, though it's not particularly nice (unsurprisingly). I've not been in at night but I doubt it'd be much to write home about by the looks of things. Also, the food is poor.
Amy_J - 11 Sep 2009 12:20
Disgusting service, and poor resolution.

Purchased 2x lunch which arrived late (and therefore cold). Bar was not busy.

Returned food to bar, was offered replacement (accepted).

Replacement food was microwaved and returned - unacceptable. Confirmed through cooking staff placing additional cheese OVER tomato sauce already applied, burger (which had a SAMPLE [not a BITE] taken out of it) was sitting there.

Didn't want to ask for a full replacement as one could have well ended up with cooking staff applied 'special ingredients' (a concern in pubs).

Disappointment to the extreme.
gegebenenfalls - 14 Jul 2009 14:03
Not good at all for food.
Went in for lunch. Had to wait half an hour before cold food was bought to our table (we ordered burgers and fries - so expected these to be served hot or at least warm). We sent these back to the kitchen and asked for fresh meals, 5 minutes later the same food was bought back, and had obviously been heated in the microwave.
Absolutely disgusted by this! Will not be going there again, even just for drinks.
maggentaM - 14 Jul 2009 14:02
Bring back the Swan, though how likely is that?
rainlight - 17 Mar 2009 07:05
This place has no signage on the front except for a piece of paper advertising the Edwards karaoke night. The two barmaids that served me seemed nice enough and my Guinness was fine. There is no real ale, only standard and premium lager, but this is the first place other than ONeills that I have spotted Guinness Red.

It hasnt really changed much since I was last in about ten years ago and I think I may leave it another ten before I try again.
Strongers - 5 Mar 2009 14:54
Really nice place since they got rid of that mental manager and her idiot barstaff especially that stuck up Polish lad. There is a new guy in charge who seems to be switched on and friendly and the bar staff actually seem nice (need a couple more ladies though).

Went in last Friday night and was surprised to find they actually have an upstairs lounge bar, couldn't believe it it had always been roped off when I have been in before. Spent all night up there relaxing with my mates.

All in all it is definatly worth a visit if you haven't been in for a few months, could do with a couple of real ales but it does serve the best pint of Guiness in Hammersmith don't know what they prevoius comment was about. Still some improvements to go but a million miles better than it was.

PeterBoyo1980 - 5 Feb 2009 15:35

Good meeting spot. Good music. Good food and drink deals.

Very small bar for the size of the pub which means getting a drink after work can sometimes be impossible. Between 6-8 on a Thursday or Friday you do really need to buy two at a time....

Good toilet factilities, if that is your thing
Aussiebattler - 12 Dec 2008 11:02
I should have known, not seeing any signage outside, that this place was gonna be crap..

Situated on a corner, this place *looks* like a pub and inside it almost *feels* like a pub... looking around at the tell-tale decor you can tell it *was* a pub, but now it's just an empty old shell with a liquor licence.

There were too many TVs, the menu looked bland and cheap chain... someone had even fled leaving a full bottle of Budweiser on the table. Yes, it must be *that* bad that they left behind their "King of Beers"...

Talking of which, there were NO real ales, not one. I had to settle for Guiness and even then I had to tell the barman how to pull the pint!

The dodgy Eastern Europeans that came in shouting and acting *randomly* behind me were a concern, but luckily I don't keep my wallet in my back pocket.

Awful place, really. I'd rather drink Special Brew out on the pavement than be unfortunate enough to drink in here again.
Lever - 26 Nov 2008 20:21
Friday night confirmed what a totally shit pub this is when I saw some poor man handled out of the pub by the bouncer for doing absolutely nothing. His girlfriend returned from the loo and was devastated that he was not in the bar and did not know where had gone on. Patrons are sleazy, has not been same since Dave left. Don't go there unless you are sad.
beercritic - 12 Oct 2008 13:43
I made the mistake of taking a friend here and eating the other day, as our old regular pub in the Hammer had become a chain.
And it was that I found the first pub in 8 years that was able to destroy a Sunday Roast dinner, the first pub ever to do so. My "Half Roast Chicken" was actually 4 pieces of cheap nasty chicken maryland from Iceland cooked in the oven on a single skewer, no spices, no effort - and it tasted old and horrible. My Partner's meal didn't taste much better. Would never eat here again!
matlong30 - 7 Oct 2008 15:06
Nice bar in a fantastic building which was once a pub called the Swan. Drink prices are reasonable and really cheap in the early evening. Only downside is the attitude of some of the bar staff. Smiling, saying 'Please' and 'Thank-you' isn't difficult. Please don't take yourselves so seriously. You're not brain surgeons, you work in a bar.
anonymous - 21 Jul 2008 13:33
My boyfriend and I visited Edwards yesterday for some quick food. I suppose you get what you pay for. This pub is cheap. The food was not as described on the menu, the bar staff had trouble sourcing things like 'salt' for us (pretty standard request!) and my boyfriend was in agony all last night with the worst food poisoning symptoms I have ever seen.
Terrible!
ukulady - 25 Feb 2008 14:35
How many more times is this gonna be the *RANDOM* pub of the Day ???

Random be f**ked ... it seems to be like every other day that it is featured.

Are the new owners of BITE independent ... or do they own this place ???
anonymous - 10 Nov 2007 02:47
Never drank too much there but I know the assistant manager and a few of the bar staff, they are all great people and the assistant manager is totally hot - but she's mine im afraid - however she works really hard to make sure everyone has a great time and gets on with each other, so definately worth a visit.
Bombayray - 5 Sep 2007 15:15
It was good i went to edwards and was outside smoking and who was to walk past?? oh yes the one and only spencer. I do believe he no longer walks around edwards like he runs the place and has resigned to working in asda? I will shake your hand for getting rid of him well done. Edwards is a much nicer place to be.
anonymous - 3 Sep 2007 14:58
Great bar, great atmosphere could be better if the dj played the right music.
But i guess you cant have everything
anonymous - 3 Sep 2007 14:55
Still a great pub but heard that Steve has gone to Australia. Hope pub does not suffer from his absence, although Phil is still around.
anonymous - 2 Sep 2007 06:37
Good place place but all i can say is get rid of that horrid D....J...he plays crap music and is not the most friendly person in the place....if he dont like the song you've requseted it aint getting played
anonymous - 14 Aug 2007 16:15
A great pub and I agree with previous reviews mainly due to Dave.Give him his own pub.Two regulars Steve and Phil also help to make this the pub to be at in Hammersmith. Whatever happened to Cath the Aussie girl who used to make the place swing on friday nights? This is the star that other Edwards bars should be guided by.
anonymous - 13 Aug 2007 07:16
Had a fab time in eds on sat...D.j played some alright music...But its was good cos guess what NO MORE SPENCER woooohoooo
anonymous - 23 Jul 2007 14:44
Too packed because the chiselling doorman let too many in there
ted_savage - 17 Jul 2007 15:04
I use to love edwards friday and saturday night...went there on friday for a quick drink and everything had changed new bar staff, new d.j,new doorman and i think even new management :((( Still a nice place but not the same with everyone being new.
booplove1978 - 16 Jul 2007 09:45
Last time I was in Eds they had a great little barman called James and he was gorgeous! Great food, great cocktails and how brilliant is it when they have that double up for a pound thing going on?! Spence (bouncer, still there???) was brilliant!
anonymous - 10 Jul 2007 15:24
A lively pub especially on a Friday night. Good crowd and atmosphere. dave the assistant manager can take a lot of the credit for this well run pub
beercritic - 23 Jun 2007 08:58
Went here spontaneously one Saturday night recently. A disappointingly pedestrian range of beers but quick service, surprisingly good mix of music and an friendly atmosphere with not too much overcrowding. - we were intending to just pass through but ended up staying the whole night. A bolder range of beer and this pub could be really good!
DrinKing - 21 May 2007 19:17
My old works mates used to love this pub....perhaps cause it was close to the office and they do cheap food. I have been a couple of times and always left disappointed.
sem07 - 20 Mar 2007 12:25
Use to frequent this bar a bit about 2 years ago but then there was a major overhaul of the place.
Fired the bouncers & blonde bar manager, changed the bar staff, Dj everything........

Was the pitts for a while with no atmosphere & lacking customer service at the bar.

Popped in last night and it was great, bar staff are attentive & even have a dance behind the bar if get a chance. Manager seems to be in control of the place along with 5-6 bouncers/doormen although think 1 was female......

Would recommend it for local and not too expensive night out until 0200 now!!
anonymous - 15 Oct 2006 18:22
The below quote is from M&B's website, the owners of the Edwards chain, and is their description of an Edwards. Can someone find any connection between this and the place in Hammersmith? "Seductive design, funky music and unlimited service have made Edwards bars the place to be for a touch of style and glamour on the high street.....A stylish crowd of regulars join handpicked DJs for flirt-central at weekends when the gorgeous cocktails and slinky music help wind up the atmosphere for some serious hedonism......So for gorgeous people and gorgeous times, try Edwards. Better bars by far."
Sparky1 - 9 Oct 2006 17:27
Saturdays can be a bit overbearing with the school disco crowd but have been on friday & saturday & always a good crowd especially since have extended their Licencing.

Drinks are what you would expect for the area, decor is quite funky since new management team taken over.

Very rarely any trouble..... Seems to be more trouble out on the broadway than in the pub itself.
Music is a varied selection since what appaears ro be a new DJ there at weekends.

Not bad if you want to have a laugh with your mates without paying ridculous amounts of money to get in somewhere (ie West end entry prices)

Also have become stricter on the entry code & seem to control more who is going in & out of the place than use to pre the extended licence!

Hannah_Hannah_Hannah - 9 Aug 2006 20:59
'paddyknowsbest' has got it spot on. The only thing he missed out on was that it fills up with semi-clad p***heads for School Disco nights who must have spent their real schooldays learning to be pr**ks. The fact that the Lloyds bar next door is better says everything.Edwards: nil points
fulhambob - 4 Jun 2006 20:13
Average bordering on sh*te. Typical Edwards territory.
The pub's not bad, the service OK, the prices normal for this part of town.
But just too unspectacular to have anything to draw you to it...
algis100 - 25 May 2006 15:24
Why anyone would want to go in here I don't know, there are plenty of far better places to go if you walk a bit. The service was decent enough but the music was far too loud and the atmosphere not the kind you want if you're after a few drinks in a proper pub. You'll probably enjoy it if you're the kind of person who's going to head off to School Disco afterwards.
C.B - 11 May 2006 13:48

The only half decent bar in Hammersmith. Staff are friendly and always having fun. Nice to see them strutting their stuff on top of the bar on a weekend.

Weekends are good but stay away from Saturdays..god awful school disco animals.. and crap DJ who loves himself a little too much
Otherwise its nice place to sit and chill with mates especially when they have the top bar open.
anonymous - 23 Feb 2006 18:10
The place is CRAP!! I booked an area upstairs for 20 people 1 week in advance. I was told absolutley no problem. We arrive and none of the primates working there knows about it and couldn't care less. Our booking had been coveniently forgotten and replaced by another larger one. So we were left standing in the crowded, smoky, dirty part downstairs until we could find an alternative at such late notice. Ruined our night. Avoid this pub!
Demon - 23 Jan 2006 13:56
DUMP - STAY AWAY! and not only that - THEY'RE THIEVES!
Don't give Edwards any money!
Not only the worst pub I've been to in years as regards (a) drink quality - flat beer with tiny choice on draught, (b) prices - a pint and a glass of wine costs just under 9.00, (c) clientele - alco-pop-swigging men in cheap suits groping pissed up secretaries, staggering teens (d) hygiene - the whole place looks as if it needs a good scrub - tables not cleaned between customers (they say that they're too understaffed) - but if they short-change you and you notice, they won't give you the money back, they tell you to write to the head-office!

I was meeting my wife there before we went to a concert and we had one drink. As the barmaid handed me my change, I saw that it was change of a tenner, not a twenty as I had given her (only one note with me). She finally got the manager who told me to come back the next day after he had done the till. I couldn't and wouldn't come back then (I live in North London) and he made a issue out of counting the till, finally concluding that I was lying!

He told me that if he gave me my tenner back, he'd lose his job and gave me the head office address to write to. Naturally, I haven't heard anything and warning others is my only comeback.

As there's no minus rating for the stealing, I'm rating it zero.
paddyknowsbest - 28 Nov 2005 17:15
Been back to this pub first time in 4 months last weekend....it rocks! Was packed, no attitude, friendly doorstaff and even the Bar staff looked to be having fun and dancing behind the bar. Music is alot better playing a bit of cheese to get everyone dancing! Had a fab nite,We will definatly be becoming regulars again!
Nadine - 6 Nov 2005 21:17
Awfull, absolutely bloody awfull. How pubs like this manage to pack them in baffles me.Rude staff, shitty bouncers, crap beer and tuneless, far too loud music. The pits of hell. It is difficult to say whether this place or the Hop Poles up the road is the worst - a tough choice indeed.Avoid.
Mr.Raffles - 23 Aug 2005 14:07
It's an Edward's. Have I said enough.
CheekyShepherd - 29 Mar 2005 00:12
I just had lunch here. I have never seen such a small portion. 6 of us eating and it was like a kids meal. My "big" burger which cost more than twice the 2 meal deal was a sliver cut in half. Dont eat here EVER! However not to look at it, but accoss the road The George does much better food, and more of it. And the Weatherspoons and Lloyds...
pervydan - 25 Feb 2005 15:58
Ahhh..where would we pub goers be without Edwards...???
Bloody in a happier place thats for sure!
Sprint through the downstairs mle of crap muzac, drunk teens, rude staff, dull beer and even duller food and check out the upstairs bar when they are running live acoustic sets.
Otherwise...run away...run away!

AusseiMatt - 25 Feb 2005 12:06
Even in the hive of scum and villainy that is the environs of Hammersmith station this place stands out as a particularly aggravating pustule. Crap beer, incompetent/slow/rude staff, overpriced, full of chavs/smoky/rubbish music. Do yourself a favour and nip 5 minutes down the river to the Blue Anchor instead.
MrLash - 22 Dec 2004 10:24
Hi, just had a wicked time at this pub, upstairs singing and watching other talented performers. The bar staff, doormen and host were all really lovely. Must say thoroughly enjoyed venue and staff. Will definetely be back. Bethxxx
Beth - 28 Oct 2004 23:49
I can handle bad music thats too loud; I can handle grumpy bar staff with attitude; but I cant handle waiting 10 minutes to be served a beer when the place isnt even that packed - Edwards has all of the above. Edwards Management sort your Sh@t out or hire some more bar staff !
Brendan - 7 Oct 2004 13:11
this pub sucks. Last Saturday I went there because I moved in the area. The chick behind the bar ripped me off and gave me change for 10 when I gave her 20. I argued with the barman and the chick who served me and they told me I was wrong. It was my first drink, all I had was 20, I had to go home. Its a trashy venue, painted up like a cheap whore.
Aaron - 15 Sep 2004 16:20
It was a dump when it was The Swan, now it's a loud dump that serves crap microwaved food. Steer clear at all costs
Hammersmith Max - 20 Aug 2004 05:50
Whats happening here? Went for the first time in ages, management have got rid of the blond that was permanently glued to the door, the bouncer's who always held the door open and would greet you with a very polite "Good Evening!" Half the bar staff we didn't recognise but most of all the new female bouncer who always appeared to be dying of depression standing on the stairs every night!(didn't even make it to 6months on the books) Now the place seems half empty and full of non-english speaking sleazy men who feel they are within their macho rights to grope you......Please sort it out!
Lavinia - 3 Jun 2004 22:52
this place has seriously gone down hill.........i used to be a regular but recently since the old door men got fired..its gone down hill.......it doesnt surprise me really door women are always snooty and power driven
lucy - 23 May 2004 18:52
its a wicked place to go friendly atmosphere brilliant people nice bar staff (Jaime)great to go with mates look out for charlies angels - gorgeous
great place to get to know people
Alex - 21 Dec 2003 14:39
a great pub for after work drinks, Friday nite hitting on the birds from the office...
rich - [email protected] - 16 Dec 2003 23:32
James you need to chill M8!!
First of all this place is for over 21's.So not sure whether it was here you saw 16 year olds in school uniform?? Its quite a fun bar for Hammersmith if you give it a chance M8. Just look at all the previous reviews!!!!!
Kieron - 6 Dec 2003 15:32
Edwards, yuk!
Good for: watching 16 year old girls on their way to School Disco around the corner. And if that is reason enough for going then you are a very sad man indeed. Or a teenager.

thenationofjames - 5 Dec 2003 13:59
What a good night out!! We went last friday, there were some fit looking men in that night. The music was rocking too...... Great atmosphere Would definately recommend a visit! ;-)
Samantha - 26 Nov 2003 17:22
Greatly improved especially since the blonde on the door seems to be doing her job now!
Good bar and great atmosphere, give it a try!
Lavinia - 31 Oct 2003 16:18
Makes a nice effort as a bar, not the sort of place to go if you're looking for a pub though - no real ales, had some sort of smooth cream beer instead, blee. Was very packed yesterday, with people heading into The Academy (formerly Hammersmith Apollo), so the crowd will vary by who is playing that night...
Pauly - 23 Oct 2003 16:25
Cool place, nice venue, good atmosphere on a saturday night. Although I think the doormen need to start being a bit more selective with who they allow in at times!! Like they used to be before the big re-vamp!
Suzanna - 6 Oct 2003 13:19
We went here last night, now we actually like the place.WEdnesday night is cool, you get a seat & bar staff are actually polite. We did notice that blond thats normally glued to the door fri/sat nights was actually behind the bar doing her job, instead of her failed attempts at the weekend to stand at the door fluttering her eyelashes. Not sure if its for the DOORMAN'S or MALE CUSTOMERS benefit!!
Lavinia - 18 Sep 2003 18:53
Went here last night after seeing some of the guys comments!! Sorry but have to agree, some fit looking totty in school uniform! Wow..... Impressive!!
Kyle - 24 Aug 2003 16:46
This is one of my locals, I think its a great, people very relaxed and friendly.Cant recall ever seeing a punch up between lads who cant handle their drink! Staff are very friendly but I have to agree with Mark who is the blonde who is permanently glued to the door??? Surely not a bouncer??
dawn - 24 Aug 2003 16:43
I use to this place quite often, until last night when I was told by one of the bouncers and his blonde bimbo assistant who was standing there at the time to protect him that we couldn't go in as it was too busy and we were wearing trainers.................
WHAT A JOKE!!!
Mark - 23 Aug 2003 20:39
Great for a drink with friends, open until late. friendly bar-staff and good music (not so sure about couple of the bouncers with their RAMBO impressions). Some serious HOTTIE's here at times!!!!!
simon - 22 Aug 2003 18:38
Not bad for a pre-clubbing drink, drinks are cheap. where can you get 4 shots for a fiver served by plesant, friendly bar staff. Very busy on a saturday. Well worth a visit!!
anonymous - 18 Aug 2003 12:05
not bad for a quick one early on before an escape on the tube or a hammersmith/chiswick/kew crawl.
millym - 26 Jul 2003 21:12
You should check the new edwards out, a lot more cheerful, new clientele and a much nicer atmosphere. Worth a look
anonymous - 20 Mar 2003 14:28
Cheap and not so cheerful, the usual tube vicinity clientele, spare a fag mate, where did I leave my special brew!
beer - 13 Feb 2003 12:08
Another pre-school disco meeting place. "I'll be the one dressed in school uniform" will not make you stand out.
