please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

It's been over 12 years since I was last in Bridport and I'd forgotten how Palmer's dominate the pub scene. The Ropemakers Arms is situated on the town's main street and is probably one of the better Palmer's pubs. Almost the full range of their ales was on - Copper Ale, Dorset Gold, IPA & Tally Ho! The 200 was being pulled through. Their Dorset Orchards First Press was also on. The pub is fairly dark inside and there are tables in a number of different seating areas. There was a good mix of both drinkers and diners.

Lovely town centre pub, usual range of Palmers beers in good condition, had the seasonal Coastal Path.

Well worth a visit.

I have posted before but can confirm nothing has changed here. Still a great community pub offering the entire Palmers range of ales. Bar staff are friendly and families/dogs welcome.

Good as ever. Beers always on top form and the new kitchen means meals are served quicker. Bar staff are excellent - special mention to Pabs, Lucy, James, Lesley & Mark. Oh, and Andrea! What a real pub should be. John & Geraldine have cracked it with the Ropies!

A great pub that never drops its standards. I use it regularly and am never disappointed. Quiz nights, meat draws, live music, pub trips, cheese samplings. The bar staff are excellent and the beer is always on top form. This is one of two pubs in town that are definitely worth a visit.

A great community pub with something for everyone. The staff love dogs and your pooch will be very welcome. Yes, it's expensive but bear in mind that this is a tied pub and the local brewery are total rip-off merchants charging as much as £100 more per barrel than you can pay through the free trade. So don't blame the landlord, blame the greedy Palmer brothers.

Got to have a couple of very well kept pints of Palmers Tally Ho! in here just recently. Bloody expensive at £3.80 a pint, but nice. I almost choked as I sipped my first sip, whilst waiting for my change though, as the person next to me was asked for £4.60 for a pint of Guinness!! How do you justify that price??!!!

Visted at lunchtime with the Mrs. Nice pint of Palmers Copper at 3.7% so good for us drivers. Good menu with a specials board. Huge portions at a reasonable price.
Friendly staff and dog friendly. Live music most evenings. Whats not to like.

Recently revisited. Bar sports 7 handpumps - 1 more than the local Wetherspoons and beer is infinitely better than the soup served there. Palmers ale hasn't always been the best but the head brewer has turned it around. Great pub, food is good too and beer always on top form. Bar staff are friendly and lots of events throughout the week. Cheese club, quiz night, open mic, live music, etc.

Palmers Brewery's brewery tap. They stock all Palmers beers and they are always on top form. Staff are friendly and pub caters for wide gamut of customers. Live music on Friday and Saturday (check website). Cheese Club. Meat Draw. Open Mic. Good food served lunchtime and evenings. Dog friendly too.

This town centre pub is full of sporting/music themed memorabilia, it is an extremely deep pub,Tardis-like in fact, eventually it leads out to a patio garden. It has a "proper pub" feel about the place. It is a Palmers tied and seems to stock every available real ale that the brew, Palmers have come around to seasonal ales rather late in the day.Now that the Nelson is so poor this is a good place to drink Palmers.......if you want to!

Very quiet when we visited of a midweek afternoon but impressive - it has the air of a pub that represents a town (see also the Barrels in Hereford). Beers are from local bigwigs Palmers of course and Dorset skittles are present and correct.

Great pub in centre of town. Palmer's beers always on form and they stock the entire range. Landlord is imaginative and actually knows what a pub should be. Staff very friendly and dogs welcome. Live music on Saturday night. Great food. Bridport needs more pubs like this!

Well kept Palmers beers, good simple food and a pleasant interior with interesting bits and bobs to look at.
A very nice, clean gents with good natural light from above and splendid old fashioned fittings in the seated area. The air hand drier actually works!
Possibly in response to Longitude's post, the bar stools are now comfortably upholstered and much easier on the posterior quarters.

Apart from the slippery wooden bar stools which are much too easy to fall off, this is one of the best local pubs in the Palmers estate. It is quite large, but subtly divided into distinct areas to stop you feeling like you are in a barn (or an old supermarket converted into a 'spoons). Quiz night (Tuesday) is popular, and yet there is still room for people to sit at the bar or play pool without being disturbed by it. Regular live music is also well attended, although sometimes you have to be content with hearing and not seeing!
The full range of Palmers beers is on tap, along with a variety of ciders and I've never had cause for complaint. Food is available and is good "pub grub" with a range of smaller dishes for those who don't want to use up too much valuable beer space. There is piped music, but it is based on John and Geraldine's quirky taste, which suits me down to the ground.

One of the better pubs in Bridport i have to say. Had a great pint of Stella here too. 7/10

Now that Palmers beer is good thanks to new head brewer this is a great pub. John the landlord is perfect for the role. Great bands. Now they sell Tally Ho too! But pricy!
johnny.sausage - 26 Feb 2011 17:54
Have started going here fairly regularly on a Saturday, as good live bands. Always a good atmosphere and always made to feel welcome by staff.

Some good live music here.

Somerfield has been gentrified it is now a Waitrose, you will not find a Somerfield in bridport!
slerpy - 31 Aug 2009 21:25
Near to Somerfield. A fairly ordinary pub, the ale is a tad worse than GBG standard.A pool table.Slightly faded air about the place. If a grockle enters heads tend to turn but all is well if you smile and participate.
