user reviews of Oak and Saw, Taplow

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The last remaining "proper" pub in Taplow, the Oak and Saw is named after devices in the Earl of Orkney's coat of arms and was converted into a pub in the 1850s from three 18th century cottages. Nicely situated by the church and village green, it was busy on Saturday lunchtime with diners at the tables nearest the front door and drinkers towards the back of the pub settling in for an afternoon of TV rugby. Ales were all from Marlow Brewery - Relativity, Rebellion IPA and Roasted Nuts. I had a pint of the last named of these which was decent enough but I'd have tried something else if I'd been stopping for a second.

Pleasant and unpretentious pub, as much Slough as Cliveden. Brakspears was OK rather than great but I would give it another go. Lovely setting.

Very quiet when we visited on a Thursday lunchtime. Beers were London Pride, Brakspears Bitter and ...Rebellion Red Hat, so naturally we made for the latter. And jolly good it was too.
Staff were friendly and chatty - although of course they had virtually no one else to talk to.
Menu is extensive - a la carte, pub lunches, sandwiches, you name it , you can have it. We went for home made burgers in something called a beer bap bun. This appeared to be ... toasted. The burger I found very dry ( don't think the toasted bun helped). I cannot eat coleslaw so asked for this to be left off, but no salad alternative was offered.
The O&S overall was fine and we would visit again. Just get some moisture onto the burger if you choose it.

Myself and family love this pub, always a friendly welcome and so cosy especially when the weather is bitter as it is at the moment. After good food (the odd glass or two) and a lovely wood burning fire, it is hard to leave....

If your looking for a REALLY nice individual pub with good food (not a chain) then the Oak is for you. Enjoy!

A proper country pub, one of a dying breed (if successive governments get their way). Now the winter months are upon us you can enjoy a pint in front of a real fire. They have a good selection of ales and lagers, also bottled ciders and wines. The food is very good including the traditional Sunday Roast. I thoroughly recommend a visit.

Whether you are looking for a night out with friends, an excellent meal with your family or a cosy night with your partner then this is definitely the pub to choose. The atmosphere is always friendly, and the staff make you feel like a local from the first visit. The food is suberb. Excellent range of beers and reasonably priced. I highly recommend you go a little out of your way and pay this pub a visit.

Looks promising from the outside and from the immediate surroundings but disappointed upon entering. Little bland and modern for my taste. The tables along with mothers and children gave the appearance of an upmarket cafe. Flat screen TV on the wall but not turned on, even on a Saturday afternoon (either have no TV and keep a semblance of an old traditional village inn or if you do have one then use it. Even with no sound). Reading back, making this place sound worse than it was. Barman was very good and it's not that bad. Just promised more before walking through the door. Good to see a St Georges Day menu being proffered though. Give it a go and then decide

Standard village pub. Not the cheapest but I've been to more expensive. Fairly friendly atmosphere most of the time, and the bar staff are always friendly and welcoming. Never eaten there, but the food always looks and smells pretty amazing.

I have used this pub which is a typical village pub with green outside on several occasions and been made most welcome by the Landlord and Staff. Renown in the area for its good food (inspired by TV Chefs). This pub also has a good selection of wines, Lagers, Guinness and Ciders. Several Real Ales can also be found with Brakspears Best Bitter and Fullers London Pride usually in Fine Form. The Inside (see picture) doubles up as a Dining area, there is also a Patio area attached to the rear of the pub with large Tables a Parasols,a real sun Trap. The pub also boasts a Large Car Park and Garden with Picnic Style Tables. Children seem to be made welcome in the Afternoon and Early Evening. Entertainemt is provided by two Fruit Machines, Quiz Machine and Flat Screen TV and Background music. Service can be slow at times as the staff "disapear" out the back when on their own, and sometimes you have to request a clean glasse, but do not let this put you off. I recommend a visit when in the area
