please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Bay Horse was certainly one of the best pubs in this town. It's right at the top end and was popular with people and dogs on my Saturday evening visit. It also has one of the better ale ranges in town - Noss Beer Works Church Ledge, New Lion Pandit IPA, Mane Event & Totnes Stout. It serves as the brewery tap for the New Lion brewery. There are also a couple of ciders - Ashridge Devon Bloom & Sandford Orchards Vintage. My Devon Bloom (Elderflower) was enjoyable. There are 3 rooms, which are all quite basic. But they an array of different seating. There is accommodation available here too.

I visit regularly with a good atmosphere, large back garden area, typically a choice of 3+ ales, various ciders, folk music regularly, log fire, no played music, this is a proper pub, and very popular with young and old. No TV, snacks mostly.

Recommended if you are visiting totnes, if you want sport - its on at the Bull nearby

A disappointing visit after some very good times here in the past.
The real cider has disappeared: there was only keg 'cider' or a blackberry flovoured confection.
Fortunately I found that real cider is still on at the Albert Inn, down the High St and just over the bridge.

Get some of the IPA down your neck, the best pint that I have had in yonks! Spot on, full of very hoppy flavour. Friendly well lived in sort of a place which is a good sign. If you are after a good pint in Totnes, this or The Albert is the place to go. Thirst suitably quenched!

15th century coaching inn. 4 well kept local ales including Otter and Dartmoor Breweries.

a number of beer festivals during the year. Bar food available. Pleasant garden at the rear.

Nice atmosphere. Good friendly service.

Found through the GBG and worth it ! Shabby from the outside but big in welcome and atmosphere
on the inside. Nice garden out the back too. Can't really remember what we drank but it was a straw-coloured localish bitter which went down a treat. Our puppy loved the landlady's treats !

What a gem of a pub.Discovered the Bay Horse a couple of years ago.Cask Ale range was first class and well kept. The landlady was delightful and made you feel very welcome.I am so glad that i found the Bay Horse.

We walked up from the very bottom of Totnes in the rain to visit the Bay Horse.
We found it ok although not exceptional. It was quiet on the day we visited.
(Well it was a tuesday afternoon during a wet February day!) I imagine it would have a cracking atmoshere during the evening.
My pint of otter bitter was a good one, I wish i had more time to try the other ales on offer.

7/10

Very good cider house. Draft Ashridge, bottled organic Ashridge, Thatchers, and Westons perry. (Also two of the keg versions of Sandford Orchards, if you like otherwise good cider kegged). Very appealing cosy interior, pasties on sale, newspapers, only reason it's not a 10 is the intrusive loud music.

No-frills pub with a rustic feel at the very top of the town. Four handpumps offering beers from Dartmoor, South Hams, Otter and Bays. Not being a fan of any of these I opted for the real cider (Ashworth?) and very nice it was too. There are at least five more ciders on tap, albeit of the carbonated variety.
The pub has three distinct drinking areas - the front bar, a middle room and the back bar. There is a sizeable split-level garden at the back which I can imagine being a suntrap on a hot summer's day.
Despite the disappointing beer selection, this is a very nice pub and I will be back.

4 Real Ales incl 2 from Dartmoor Brewery and 2 from Bays priced @ 3 pint. Comfy Clean & Cosy Pub,Nice welcoming bar staff and a decent beer garden, prob Totnes's best pub for cask ales. 8/10

Certainly worth an 8, went last Friday evening and it was as good as I hoped.
This is a 'proper' pub that just sells a good range of quality beer in great condition.
Nice inside and has the added attraction of a large garden as well.
4 hand pumps and also a barrel of Otter, just what Real Ale lovers want so long may it continue and flourish, we'll certainly return ASAP.

Agree all previous comments re beer; truly superb. A bit lacking in atmosphere though, albeit we were there early evening and it would probably have picked up later.

Can't fault the ale at all. Spot on. Tip-top condition.
Found it very very quiet. Even the bar man didn't speak, which was actually quite amusing.
Mind, it was mid-afternoon on a Monday.

Best pub in Totnes - good beer, smart without being pretentious and a decent beer garden out back

Re visited one year on. Further to my comments below, the pub has been run by a new couple for about a year now. They are very friendly and welcoming and they seem to champion traditional pubs and real ales and ciders etc. They have a lot of local knowledge which they willingly share. If you like real pubs with real people and real drink then go here. Its a locals pub but one where non locals will be made very welcome. The beer quality was excellent with (on my visit) Otter served straight out of a barrel on the bar. Jail ale and others also available and totally suppable.

Excellent friendly locals pub, just above the town. Some good beer and excellent pork pies.

The best kept secret in the west country! The quality of the beer was of benchmark-setting standard. Bright, fully conditioned, perfect. A warm welcome and a fantastic pint. 10/10.

The Bay Horse Inn is another former coaching house situated at the very end of The Narrows up from Totnes High Street. Its a bit of a trek uphill but is well worth it.
As mentioned below the interior is comfortable and functional rather than being traditional. The stone floored main bar area has bench seating in the bar section and comfortable leather seating area to the side. Then behind this is the second, snug type area with wooden tables and chairs.
Then through to a very large outside drinking area which stretches back on two levels for a fair distance from the pub. The first section being crazy paved and the second being a grass area , both with Jumbrellas.
But its not the dcor but the beers that has got this place into the GBG09. Four real ales on offer which at the time of my visit were Dartmoor Summer Ale and Jail Ale, Bays Devon Dumpling, and Otter Amber. Tried the Devon dumpling and the Dartmoor Summer Ale and both were excellent.
Not sure when seeing the comment below if the couple behind the bar are the previous Landlord and Landlady or new incumbents, but whoever they are theyre still running a good ship as far as the beer is concerned and it is well worth its entry in the GBG09.

A pub is the sum of its parts. And what the Bay Horse lacks in terms of an authentic or interesting interior, it makes up with the best beer I drank in Totnes ( jail Ale, Sharps Eden and Otter ) and plenty of atmosphere as it filled up with town folk to become the busiest pub I found in Totnes.
The landlady was friendly but I was sorry to hear that she is selling up as she is running a good little pub.
tarkatherotter - 10 May 2009 20:53
This pub is worth a visit, decent beer, friendly atmosphere. There was a beer festival on when I was here in September 08, and the night before the were lots of black clad Morris types in the garden.

Absolutely superb boozer! The landlord and lady are both very welcoming and they keep their ales in super order. They have just won South Devon Camra Pub of the Year 2008 and it seems well deserved to me, i had a pint of Jail Ale and it was probably the best i've tasted in a year, it was sparkling through the glass and was brilliantly clear, i hope this couple stay for a while to come yet. I went in there on a Tuesday evening at about 10.30 after coming from the Isaac Merrit in paignton, The Bay Horse was packed, always a good sign! Will definitely be back.

Will & Gina are fairly new arrivals to the Bay Horse and are turning it into a gem of a pub.

Great beers, ciders, wines & superb food along with a warm welcome.

There is also a very pleasant garden, 3 rooms for accommodation which again is excellent with great breakfast.

We stayed 2 nights early may & will be returning
