Completed a walk from here. It was in a nineties guide called Pub Walks in Berkshire. The lanes are now more like motorways and the walking was terrible.

The pub itself was pretty decent. Mainly a restaurant but with a separate pubby bit. The food was high quality pub fodder. Had to send a photo home for vegetable identification purposes. Beers - Ringwood Razorback - was also in good condition.

Good example of a country pub.

I stumbled upon this one quite by chance on Boxing Day whilst walking out from Wokingham. I had no idea it was here and was delighted to find it open following my disappointment in finding the nearby White Horse shut. Delightful: must try luch hee next time in the area.

I wholeheartedly agree with Phil, in that this place is far more deserving than the current rating. Is split into 2 distinct and separate parts, the restaurant and the pub. This means the pub area remains very "pubby" and not overly "foody". Traditional looking place and a superb snug too, with various knicks-knacks to look at on the walls. Moderate selection of real ales and pleasant, knowledgable staff
Have been here solely to eat and solely to drink and impressed on both counts, as were rest of my party. Just a shame it's location means a drive the only feasible way to get here for most people

A really good pub this. It's in a quiet area and is nicely laid out and obviouslys kept very clean. The beer, wine and food is a good range and standard and reasonably priced (10 will get you a decent main), with helpful and friendly staff to boot. There is plenty of car parking space and a nice open outside garden.
I am rather surprised by the low score shown at present, can only surmise this is a legacy of poor reviews in the dim and distant past... no way should this pub have a rating in the low 5s. Definitely recommended.

First visit since the change of licensee last evening. I must say the place is much improved from its previous incarnation. It is now more "pubby" and a little more like the place of years gone by, even some of the old regulars were back. The new people in charge are friendly, efficient and clearly doing their best. The beer - Brakspear Ordinary and Special - was very good, some of the best Brakspear's in the area. Hobgoblin also available. The food was OK - perhaps we expected more from the description. We will certainly return.

After a walk from Wokingham to here via Crowthorne we were looking forward to lunch and the Crooked Billet was scheduled to provide it. The pub was quiet, three other customers. We had some very nice Ringwood Porter, which I'd not had before and would happily have again. The staff were fine - not effusive but not stand-offish either.

The food was OK - I had the strangely named "locally reared beef burger" - i fully expected to see little burgers running around in the adjacent field. The Steak and Horseradish Pie recommended by a previous reviewer was not available.

The pub seemed to be divided into two halves. The older half had normal furniture and a dartboard, but the newer half had very utilitarian furniture - square tables which made the place look like a school dining room.

It was hard to get too excited about the Crooked Billet. We had some good beer and an acceptable lunch but it just didn't have that je ne sais quoi to lift it above the ordinary. More customers would have probably helped.

Wow! what a change in this pub from the last time I visited. The new landlord has made a tremendous effort to bring it back to its former glory. The new menu is very well balanced and offers something for everyone. When we were there it was very busy which meant we had to wait a bit longer for the food than we would have liked but I feel sure these are just growing pains. All in all a very agreeable experience, much improved.

Went to this pub last weekend and was pleasantly surprised. I haven't been there for some time but it has really improved.
The pub has recently been taken over by a new landlord. Nicely redecorated. Great new menu - I can recommend the Steak and Horseradish pie. Although I didn't have beer, I can recommend the wine menu
I chatted to the landlord and landlady - they've come down from London and are very friendly people. They seem to have lots of plans in place to improve the pub even more over the next few months. The pub was really busy so whatever they are doing seems to be working.
All in all, I found this to be a little jewel of a pub which is in the process of being polished up so I will definitely return...

Super pub in a lovely location. A bit out of town but great for cycling or walking to for a spot of Sunday lunch. Shame the beer's a bit on the expensive side tho.

Ticked all the right boxes for me.
Brakspears Ordinary 2.95 pint. Not cheap, but not overly expensive for the area.
Food looked reasonable.
Will come again when next in the area.

A very nice pub, has been my local for many years, but go there very infrequently these days as the Brakspears is so expensive. The last time I went a week or so ago it was 3.10 for a pint of Special. That is a lot of money. Nice pint though, but a lot.

A lovely pub in a very nice country setting. The beer is very good, but very expensive.
