please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Pleasant enough pub with a good range of ales. Surprisingly empty for a Friday night, and the barman called Time at 10.30 - just like the bad old days.
scoobybooze2 - 11 May 2022 12:46
Friendly, helpful barman, 7 pumps with 5 ales on, I had Jennings 'Cocker Hoop' [decent pint] & Jennings 'Snecklifter' [good pint].
alehippy - 1 Oct 2018 13:59
Friendly & efficient barman, nice cosy pub, friendly clientel, pub does not have a smoking area. I had Thwaites'' ''Wainwright''; a well kept tasty pint.
alehippy - 16 Sep 2017 16:00
My first visit here yesterday. A labyrinth of corridors with snugs leading off. A nice pint of bitter to slake my thirst. Definitely be coming here again.
manontrain - 14 Feb 2017 15:19
A small bar area with a lounge area that you can see when at the bar. We had our drinks at the bar and it wasn't too bad but was a bit cramped even though there weren't that many other people in the bar, the size and the layout of the room meant the space probably wasn't used as well as it could have been. All the ales on the bar were national brands, including Banks's Bitter, Jennings Snecklifter, Ringwood Forty niner and Boon doggle, Lancaster Bomber by Thwaites. I went for the Banks's bitter at 2.49 it was well kept and a decent pint. Various decorations around the pub dedicated to its history including a list of all the licensees going back to 1780 and also to Shrewsbury itself. The locals seemed friendly enough with a barman who wasn't too engaged. CCTV and a TV that wasn't on just at the side of the bar. Beer glasses hanging on and around the bar was a good touch. Solid pub and well priced so give it a try.
Wezzielad - 8 Jan 2017 22:27
Very interesting pub and worth the visit for the grade II listed status alone.

An adventure just getting in and finding the bar!

Not too impressed with the real ale choice mind. Think there were 3 on and when I asked about the "Snecklifter", the advice was that it was 5.1%.

Not quite the tasting notes I had in mind. Decent enough pint.

Would say it is still a must visit 'institution' to see in Shrewsbury but the poor selection and variable ale quality have me marking it down on this visit.
anonymous - 12 Aug 2014 18:03
A wonderful building worth visiting for the time-warp novelty. It's a shame they are rather restricted on the real ale range but the Cockle Warmer was in fine fettle on a recent visit. A big plate of Sunday roast for £5 was a treat- the staff were fantastic too.
vicpark - 20 Feb 2014 20:14
where has the bass gone? Always a must place visit even with no bass! Absolutely love this place. It is a pub with real character and lots of it definitely the best pub in Shrewsbury without doubt. I would highly recommend this place.. Everyone is so friendly wonderful place to have on your doorstep
Robertlovingbeer - 21 Jan 2014 09:58
Still a classic pub with a great atmosphere, but disappointing that the Marstons management have now removed Draught Bass, which used to be the staple beer in here.
Heatonian - 30 Mar 2013 23:06
What a very quirky place this is! I went in to the main bar room which was small but very comfortable. I counted 7 handpumps on the bar - I opted for the Snecklifter by Jennings Brewery which was delicious and very well kept.

Interesting chat with the locals who were very friendly. One pointing out to me the door frame to the room we was sitting in. I said the joiner must have been pissed when he built that as it was slanted! This in fact added to the overall charm of the place.

As I walked to the toilets, I soon realised that it had three other cosy rooms, all linked by a narrow corridor. I love pubs like this as I see them as hidden gems, that have not been ruined or updated.

Once the young lady behind the bar finished her shift, the landlord came in. I complimented his pub and his ales. I also just happened to mention that he was a dead-ringer for Mr Manchester himself - no other than Anthony H Wilson. The infamous Haciender nightclub owner and also the owner of Factory Records. I'm not sure if he was pleased or perturbed by my comments?

One of my favourite pubs in my short visit to Shrewsbury.

Highly recommended!

A traditional old pub with four rooms, this has remained unchanged for many years I would imagine which makes a pleasant change when so called makeovers have destroyed so much of our pub heritage. The bar counter is located in the centre of the pub, although it is only directly accessible from two of the rooms. The main room at the front of the pub includes the bulk of the bar counter, and a small serving hatch to one side gives access to one of the side rooms.

The front bar is furnished with some type of lino on the floor, dark red wood panelling on the lower part of the walls and pale brown paintwork above. There was an old black fire-place and a plasma that was perhaps a little out of place, but at least it did not have the sound on. Various old black and white photos were dotted around the walls.

At one point someone in one of the rooms off to the side starting strumming a guitar and singing. Whether this was part of some official pub entertainment or simply a punter who fancied a sing along, Im not sure. The food offering was very much of the basic pub snack variety, with Pork Pie and mustard or pickle available for 2, a Sunday Roast for a fiver or create your own sausage & mash for 6.50.

Several beers on tap, although perhaps a little uninspiring choice - Nelson Sauvin New Zealand Single Hop, Jennings Dark Mild, Marstons Pedigree, Banks Bitter, Marstons 5 Hops and Jennings Sneck Lifter. Ciders were Strongbow & Thatchers Gold. Overall, Id say this is a great, unspoilt pub and well worth a visit. On the other hand, it was very male dominated, and most of the clientele was in the 50+ range. Consequently, Mrs B. felt a little out of place, so it may not be to everyones taste.
Blackthorn - 17 Sep 2012 22:55
This is a nice pub in a very pleasant location in Shrewsbury. There are 3 (possibly 4) small rooms that have plenty of character. Sadly the beer range is only from the Marstons range - Jennings Sneck Lifter, Marstons EPA, Pedigree & Single Hop, Banks's Mild & Ringwood Boondoggle. If you don't mind Marstons, I would recommend it.
blue_scrumpy - 25 Jun 2012 20:47
Gorgeous pub, boring bland beer.
daveid - 11 Jun 2012 13:46
agree with the last review on our vist seemed cold no atmosphere need more bits bric a brac around ,service ok real ok, but just the banks/marstons range on sale,
DAKING - 16 May 2012 11:29
Of course I meant to say that it has "lost its heart and soul"
mcroyal - 9 Dec 2011 11:57
This is a lovely old pub with several rooms and oodles of character - well it was last time I visited. Something has changed and it felt very cold and impersonal. It looked like the walls had been stripped of pictures and bric-a-brac as it had an air of emptiness about it. The rooms are still there but it just didn't feel the same to me. I got the feeling that it had changed from a tenanted pub to a managed house and when I spoke to the barman at The Salopian Bar he said that's what had happened. So it now has almost the complete range of Marstons beers on tap (including Bankss; Hobgoblin;Brakspears and Jennings) but has its "heart and soul" My Bankss Bitter was OK but I have definitely had better. Great shame as this was one of the country's classic pubs (the CAMRA plaque is still there).
Please put this back to a tenancy and get some TLC back into the place.
mcroyal - 9 Dec 2011 11:56
Nice old building but let down by the lack of beer range. Just big breweries when I went, and my hobgoblin was only fair quality.
jarofporter - 11 Oct 2011 14:45
Lovely old multi-roomed pub, friendly barman, sadly the beer, Ringwood and a Jennings were pretty poor. The old multi-room layout is beautiful and demands a visit if in the area. But such a shame to see a magnificent old quirky building let down by dire beer. I just hope someone wiser takes this pub over.

Roy22 - 2 Oct 2011 17:26
Great looking pub, but just got halves in here as the generic boring beer you can get anywhere let it down for me.
ToxtethOGrady - 22 Apr 2011 23:46
Called during lunchtime on the last day of Wrexham & Shropshire Railway operation on Friday 28 January. A very historic pub with rooms unchanged for centuries. 6 draught beers were available: Hobgoblin, Snek Lifter, Bank's Bitter, Banks Original, Draught Bass, and XXXX Porter. I sampled the latter two which were excellent. Was made welcome by the friendly locals in the front snug. A class English pub.
outhousemouse - 11 Feb 2011 13:14
Well the beer is excellent I just wish the same could be said about the service ! On my latest visit, in the middle of pouring my drink the barmaid went outside to have a smoke !!! I had to wait until she came back in. She then claimed to have forgotten about me which would have been difficult as there were only two other people in the pub.

This was a shame because I had a nice pint of Bass, and there were another 4 or 5 beers from the Marstons range (including Banks Bitter and Jennings Cumberland Ale). The pump clips can only be seen from the front snug, but there are lists of beers chalked up on the serving hatches at either side. Lunchtime meals were advertised, but Ive never eaten there.

6/10 must improve

Martinsh - 31 Jan 2011 22:45
A mutli-roomed kind of 'House That Jack Built' type of place with very few straight lines and door frames as crooked as a badger's bum. Small bar to the right as you go in and a 'Gents Only (till 1975) bar to the left. I was served a nice pint of Jennings Cocker Hoop by an efficient and diligent barman and the missus kept faith with old policies and decided not to go in to the Gents Only bar (not sure if it was the notice or the fact it seemed populated by sheep herder looking types nursing halves of mild). We went in the back room which had pictures of authors on the wall. If you're in Shrewsbury then it is one of those must visit pubs.
anonymous - 31 Oct 2010 15:20
Well worth a visit for the interior, invoking an earlier age. Had a great night with Mike Harding in here many years ago.
Cotnap - 24 Sep 2010 23:47
Visited here on Bank Holiday Monday afternoon. We were curtly told by the barmaid that the lounge was off limits to customers (she and her partner had commandeered it so they could eat their KFC's in peace). The only real ale on offer was Bass & nothing else. When I asked for a pint of Bass the aforementioned barmaid somewhat reluctantly put down her fried chicken before serving us. She did lick her greasy fingers clean before pulling the pint though. Why waste time washing hands? We won't be returning for a while.
dennisd - 2 Sep 2010 20:03
Excellent interior, CAMRA National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors - Bank's bitter okay and only Strongbow cider on - must visit pub
KeithP - 29 Aug 2010 12:15
Beer continues to be in good form.
dpaajones - 12 Jul 2010 20:26

A Marston's house . Wide but seemingly un-rotating beer list. Very friendly keen and knowledgeable landlord. Beer in good condition on my visit.

Fantastically aged snug bar that was gentlemen only until as recently as 1975.Sadly the fireplaces are unused /condemned - very shortsighted approach from the brewery unwilling to spend the reputed 3000.

A visit to Shrewsbury wouldn't be complete without a visit here

Verdict: Treat the Mrs and take her to see that snug bar and let her buy you a
pint

A lot busier again after being quiet the last couple of visits and a Thursday night too. This is a must visit pub and a favorite in Shrewsbury. Standing in the corridor looking into the smoke room with it's tables scrubbed so much over the years that there's barely any top left. Great to see folk music in this venue again with a show stopping performance from a female singer soloist. What better way to finish the night with an excellent pint of Jennings Snecklifter to boot.
Wirral_RealAlians - 23 Mar 2010 21:04
Lovely little pub with some filling pork pies. Good range of 5 ales but none of them local
Booze_Allen - 11 Jan 2010 17:44
Friendly traditional pub in the centre of Shrewsbury. Good selection of ales. Brakspear on sometimes. Pub games in the various rooms (if you can find your way round!) with the bar at the centre of the establishment. Located on Church Street, which is just off St Mary's Street, between St Mary's and St Alkmund's churches. Only 5 minutes walk (at the most) from the railway station. Well worth a visit - probably the best "no nonsense" pub in the town centre.
dpaajones - 26 Nov 2009 18:57
Splendid old-fashioned pub with a good selection of real ales from the Marston's stable - my pint of Banks's Bitter was excellent. Only found two of the four rooms, but I will certainly be going back again on my next visit to Shrewsbury to check the place out properly.
rpadam - 5 Oct 2009 23:55
Fine traditional unspoilt town centre pub, meriting a place in CAMRA's National Inventory of Unspoilt Interiors. There's 4 rooms in total. The bar counter is in the small public bar at the front of the pub, with serving hatches for customers in the other rooms. Note in particular the small room on the left with settles and bell pushes and a sign telling us that this room was "Gentlemen only until 1975". In the public bar, what was presumably the old pub sign, reminds us that a loggerhead is a kind of turtle. Etched windows at the front of the pub designate "Bar Parlour" and "Smoke Room".

Loggerheads is badged as a Banks pub. Beers on during my visit were Banks Bitter,Bass, Brakspears Oxford Gold, Ringwood Best, plus 2 beers from Jennings - Cocker Hoop and Sneck Lifter.

This pub is well worth seeking out
JohnBonser - 22 Sep 2009 13:13
excellent, traditional town centre local with 4 small bars. The Smoke Room was our favourite with benches all round the walls and shove halfpenny. Good beer too. A real find.
pk_munroe - 9 Aug 2009 22:30
This is one of Shrewsburys must visits , a proper traditional town centre pub unchanged for years as are some of the more eccentric regulars , 6 ales on my visit ,Bankss Bitter ,Bass ,2 from Jennings and 2 from Ringwood , i had Doopledog which was good . If your in Shrewsbury this is well worth a visit .
trenchlad - 3 Aug 2009 18:41
Well worth visiting just for the artifacts, also has shove ha'penny, not something you see very often nowadays.

I enjoyed a couple of pints of Merrie Monk, which used to be Marston's best mild but now is just tarted up Pedigree.

oldandmild - 10 Jun 2009 04:36
This building is fanatstic - lovely painted brick extrior, with a maze of little wooden rooms inside, one of which sports the 'gents only (until 1975)'.

I have eaten here before - a nice chilli that the gaffer said was a bit hot - and i can vouch it was - but not to the point of being inedible.

There is no MILD, so opted for the next best thing which was a Merrie Monk, which went down well.

Always worth a visit, just ask how hot the food is!

Archivist - 27 May 2009 14:55
Nice, traditional pub c/w dartboard and a stash of darts available should you wish to recreate Jocky Wilson vs John Lowe whilst sampling the beers.
Mark_J - 5 Mar 2009 17:15
Great little pub this and well worth a visit for the ale and a snack.
Snecky - 5 Feb 2009 12:31
Small, multi-roomed traditional pub which is slightly confusing when you visit for the first time. Once you have sussed out the geography you realise the bar is central. Choice of real ales is unimaginative. We sat in the small front room & with about 10 people it was absolutely crammed full. Talking to a local he said this pub has remained unchanged for at least 35 years. I'm actually sure it is probably longer than that. Friendly welcome & well worth a visit if you like historic interiors.
happytyskie - 2 Feb 2009 14:36
Old pub with multiple small rooms, all with a diffferent character. Low ceilings, flag floors in parts. In other words a proper Olde Worlde gem. Beer selection is OK with Banks's Bitter & Winter Ale plus Pedigree and Ringwood XXXX Porter on when I called in. Had a pint of the Winter Ale which was very good. I'll certainly call in again.
ROBCamra - 12 Dec 2008 10:43
A proper pub for proper people. Deservedly on CAMRA's National Inventory of Pub Interiors, it can't have changed in decades. Several rooms with ancient wood panelling, rustic old seating and narrow corridors, topped off by a good selection of real ales. In a area of good pubs, this stands out.
Carlurmston - 29 Sep 2008 17:48
Multi roomed boozer with a selection of beers from the Marstons range. Worth a visit.
LickeyEndBooze - 26 Aug 2008 22:26
best pub in shrewsbury with great character and friendly staff and punters.
mps77 - 19 Jun 2008 14:14
A place anyone would be happy to have as there local. I am!
theboltonwonderer - 15 May 2008 16:40
A nice old pub with lots of invidual lounges. Quite small bar area but side hatches allow for easy access. Would go any if staying in area. Beer selection reasonable.
adrian7886 - 15 Jan 2008 13:09
A wonderful REAL pub. I sincerely hope that the character of this place never changes in the name of "modernisation". Please only vacuum round and wipe down the tables - don't mess with anything else.
alexromanov - 28 Sep 2007 23:18
The loggerheads will be opening on Friday (31st August)business will resume as usual.
theloggerheads - 28 Aug 2007 21:21
CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS - Hopefully will be open towards tail end of the year.
anonymous - 1 Jun 2007 13:23
Visited The Loggerheads last week while in Shrewsbury for first time - a real gem of a pub,the Bank's and Pedigree ales first class. The regulars very friendly. A must visit on any trip to the town, can't wait to return.
Howarde - 15 Oct 2006 19:56
There's still time to dash in for a last pint for a while, though. The brewery haven't confirmed the date for the start of the closure, so if you haven't visited either at all or for a while, you will have the chance to do a before and after.
shropspy - 19 Jul 2006 15:13
Will the readers of this please note that, due to structural problems, the pub will be shutting for up to 6 months whilst essential work is undertaken.
BUT, the brewey have promised not to destroy the atmosphere, if at all possible.
Where we Salopians will go during that time, I am not too sure. But, dont worry, we will start drinking there again ASAP.
anonymous - 8 Jun 2006 17:19
excellent beer and choice of beer, shame it is not accessible
cbrookes75 - 16 Feb 2006 19:59
A traditional multi-roomed pub with excellent Banks' beers and proper grub. Had an excellent treacle pudding there once.... A few minutes from the station and near the town centre, a good way to start a crawl. Highly recommended!
fromedrinker - 16 Feb 2006 14:42
People could be put off by first impressions - the room with the bar counter doesn't look anything special - but this pub is a treasure. Excellent ale and honest-to-goodness food at not much more than half the price of most of the opposition. The highlight of my recent visit to Shrewsbury.
joegreen - 16 May 2005 13:51
When I do my 2 day session in Shrewsbury/Ludlow,my 1st port of call-after leaving The Lion Hotel-is the Loggerheads...walk in the door to the left & go into the 1st room on the left & you`ve been transported back to.....God Knows when-but it must have been at least 10 minutes ago & most probably 40 years...(this time travel thingy is a most imprecise science!!).
kierandinan - 27 Feb 2005 02:23
Truly magnificent
mousefan - 26 Feb 2005 20:15
The Loggerheads has recently won Shrewsbury & West Shropshire CAMRA Brnch Pub Of The Year for 2004.
Bevboys - 23 Apr 2004 18:11
still as good as ever, same family behind bar and in kitchen ; same regulars for lunchtime food and drink trade ; give it a try , you won`t be disappointed and congratulate cellar/bar man Mike for having a wife, Clare, the tall one , who is a full member of CAMRA. (branch meetings held in the genleman`s side bar). Aunt Sharon now serves some evenings as well as lunchtime , so be warned.
Martin Price - 22 Feb 2004 05:52
When in Shrewsbury call in at this family run town centre W and D Brewery (Bankss) unspoilt by progress, local. Full Bankss range plus two guest beers . No canned music, pool tables, . Four distinct rooms including small friendly bar(TV for sports) and lounge , with servery to gentleman`s snug, land back room . Friendly banter is the order of the day , as regulars travel miles, and some not so many, to enjoy good beer in good company .A chalk board in the l ounge gives a range of good value, well prepared food from chip butties, cold and / hot sandwiches to full pub meals .Have a table then give your order for a bacon and mushroom sandwich behind the bar , pay for food and beer , then enjoy; and do not miss Aunt Sharon serving at lunch times.
