Friendly pub with a decent selection of the Shep's ales. Only Shep's ales, but that's the brewery's policy

Old fashioned. In the best way possible. The area, off a main road but in the mashes, gives it an on-the-edge-of-wilderness feel and the pub itself, cosy and aged has an old smugglers inn feel about it (perhaps because it once was). The whole effect; walking in from a windy stroll on the marshes and down into a warm welcoming low ceilinged bar with flagstones, a big inglenook fire place and two dozing cats is an experience to be encouraged. It flirts a little with that Ye Olde look from the 1970s, but gets away with it by being honest and having a good atmosphere and friendly service. Good banter at the bar, even on the quiet afternoon we visited. The food is of the same ilk; pie and chips, fish and chips, lasagna etc. pubby food, but pubby food done really well and in large portions too. And by pie, I mean a pie, not a dish with some puff pastry shoved on top of it. Old fashioned perhaps, but in the best way possible.

My one and only gripe would be that it’s a Shepherd Neame pub; they produce fine ales but that’s all the choice you get and if you are a beer tourist after a guest ale from a small local brewery you are out of luck.

A quaint pub, but not cheap!

I have been visiting this pub for a number of years and have always found the food to be of a high standard. I was worried that this may change with the new owners but I have found that it is still very good. We own a caravan at Camber and use this pub at least once on every visit to this area. All of the friends and family we have taken there have been impressed too so it gets my vote. There is a wide variety of food on the menu, the beer is good and the staff friendly and helpful.

Agree with the writer below. We used to be the regulars here. But after the last landlord left and this place has gone downhill in food and service level for the past year. You hardly see the new landlord and the place was run probably by a manager or supervisor with all kids in the kitchen. This was our last visit. Don't think we will come back until things are sorted out.

Went to this pub during our stay in Camber Sands last week. We chose it as it looked very cosy and friendly when we went to find somewhere for dinner. We arrived and ordered a round of drinks and the lady that served us was very nice and helpful. Sadly, that was where our positive review ended. We ordered 7 meals and waited for over an hour for any sign of food. 2 plates were delived by a very harassed looking waitress, and we realised the dishes were cold. We asked for them to be replaced with hot food and she returned 5 minutes later with exactly the same plates having been reheated in the microwave! We called her over again to ask for a further replacement, whereupon she advised us that there had been a row in the kitchen, everyone was shouting at her and she promptly slammed the plates down on the table and burst into tears!
By now it was nearing 90 minutes since we had ordered and my husband asked when we could reasonably expect to see some food. This was conveyed to the kitchen staff who didnt realise my husband could see them and a young man began swearing and using rude hand gestures.
We can only assume that the Landlord was away or unavailable, as the pub seemed to be being run by very young, inexperienced staff.
It is a shame as we regularly travel to Camber to visit friends and relatives, but we certainly wont use or even recommend this pub again
The 3 rating is purely for the building and gardens.

Probably my favourite pub in the Romney area. Great food, excellent beer and friendly staff. All set in a wonderful 15th century pub. Roaring fire is usually on the go in the main bar and for the warmer days there is a very good garden to enjoy too.
I just wished this was my local pub at home!!

Another excellent, tradional Kentish country pub with superbly kept beer, ravishingly good home-cooked food and a real, heartfelt welcome. The atmosphere is made homely by the old stone floors (possibly original), roaring open fire and tolerant pub cat (who made it quite clear whose company he favoured). I tried all 3 of the Sheps beers - Late Red, Spitfire and Master Brew; all were perfect. With the Red Lion in Snargate just up the road, this is a must for any country crawl.

Renewed my acquaintance with this pub a few weeks ago, and glad to say it's as good as ever. Friendly, relaxed, very traditional. I love their Shepherd Neame Master Brew, and it goes remarkably well with the Chilli con carne.

I can't find any fault with this pub - and I am not easy to please.

Staff friedly & helpful, food massive and good quality beer well kept.

Very friendly and picturesque 15th-century pub just off the A259, south-west of Brookland, on Walland Marsh. Nice pint of Late Red.

Very nice pub, in a scenic location between Brookland and Camber. The pub is small and cosy with old beams etc, but if you can't fit in there is a large beer garden. Shepherd Neame beers in good condition. An extensive menu of traditional pub food- our meals were served promptly and the food was very good. Try the steak pie. A pub which manages to be welcoming to everyone.

Dropped in here on Sunday afternoon on our way back from Rye. The place was somewhat packed - largely by a members of a scooter club "on tour" Despite this, the service was brisk, efficient and friendly, with the Spitfire being of an excellent standard.

Can't really comment about the cooked meals (other than the fact that they looked substantial) but the sandwiches we had were very good value.

Will certainly call again next time we are doen that way.

We had dinner here two nights on the trot and thought it was a really nice place to eat & drink. The food was good and the staff were on their toes.

Great pub in a great location - it was always going to be a winner. However I have to disagree with the comments made on the 29/08/06 and 12/11/06 by Anon and Ahrmedofrye respectively.

Firstly regarding Anon's comment about this pub being a touch Chavvy. It isn't, unless you consider a mixed crowd of old and young, families and locals "Chavvy". I suspect that Anon does not truly understand that term. Either that or he takes his drinks at Buckingham Palace! Ahrmedofrye, states that the food is bland and overated. Again this isn't so! The food is well cooked and in massive portions. It's not anything fancy, rather good food well done, very well done.

My fellow drinker, should you ever find yourself down this way, my advice to you would be to stop off for a drink and something to eat as this is a real gem of a pub picturesque surroundings.
PigPen_in_the_Fens - 13 Jun 2007 17:43
The location makes this pub, the ales and lagers are kept well but the food is basic, bland and overrated, all in all 6/10

Somewhat chavvy? Can this be the same pub as the one I know? Perhaps the commenter used the family bar. The old bar (ie, the real bar) is not remotely 'chavvy'.

Nice pub, smokey as anything inside though. Food was good value and the beer was good, albeit the small Shepherd Neame range. Only downside was that the place was somewhat chavvy.

Would agree with the two previous comments. Had a holiday nearby recently and found the pub to be friendly and well run on both occasions. On the evening we had food the meals were large and impressive! Excellent quality and probably one of the best steaks I've had in a long while. Kids enjoyed their meals too - macaroni cheese described as delicious! Sausages described as -'Dad you've got to try one of these!' Stilton/pasta bake was soooooo stiltony. Beer super and the staff are beautifully efficient. A 'must' if in the area.

Definitely one of the best pubs in Kent!

A traditional, friendly, well-run pub with great ales and even better food.

In fact, the food is worth mentioning twice... Not only is it wonderful, there is always so much of it, and for such a low price... The best value food for miles!!!

I just wish you didn't have to drive to get to it! I would happliy make it my local!

This is a super, traditional pub. Very low ceilings, oak beams, a huge open fire. Even more important, friendly staff, beautifully kept Shepherd Neame ales, and good food. Oh and a lovely black cat called Liquorice!

The Woolpack has always been one of Romney Marsh's traditional pubs, but under its present landlord it has become much more welcoming and well-run.

It is one of my three favourite pubs (anywhere).
