This place has closed down to be converted to flats or something. Best thing for it really - it was being run into the ground.

I agree with the comments below. Met a friend here recently and wished I hadn't. The place reeks of cigarette smoke and everyone seems to be shouting at each other all the time.

Full of shouting idiots and a lousy selection of drinks. A real pity considering that from the outside, it looks as if it might be nice.

I agree with cowabunga. Went in there recently with my family, I had to ask the bar maid if it was open as there were no lights on. Small group of nicely dressed 1980s ghosts at the end of the bar though and oh, I do like 80s music, but not cloudy London Pride! Perhaps they were waiting to fire up the Quattro. I decided to sit in the beer garden. It was as if the crew had left the ship. What a shame.

Beautiful looking pub, but an unwelcoming kind of place with nothing on tap to tempt, no food and boorish clientel on the ocassion I went there. Desperately needs investment/new pub company to take it over.

Lovely country feel pub of main Brighton Road. New friendly owners since May. Bar snacks available, big south facing garden. Well worth a visit, wished I lived closer so this could be my local!!

I visited this pub for the first time having lived in South Croydon for two years.

I have to admit I found the pub a nice place, they had the footy on and the place was not that busy so was able to enjoy a quiet pint or two. The bar seemed friendly and the toilets were clean.

What the heck is going on here now????
Popped in and the great lassy they had running it - Nicky - has gone. It was spotlessly clean and so well managed like it was years ago, but now I see it's gone down again . No atmosphere, dirty loo, dirty glasses, and worse to report NO BEER.I was in last friday , hoping to hear Nickys great music choice the rat pack etc. and have a pleasant few beers a chat to the lovely clientele she built up ... but none of it!!!The music was blaring , jumping and sticking, they ran out of 4 different beers, no manager in sight,a lovely lass called Dannielle did her best the other girl hadn't got a clue. Oh well Jack Beards , you ve done it again, ruined a lovely pub so it's back to the Crown n Sceptre.AGAIN !!!

Really nice quiet little town pub. Recommended.

Quiet pub in a South Croydon side street. Has quite a country feel to it.

The pub was virtually deserted last Sunday afternoon - not sure why - I'll return some day and perhaps I'll find out why.

Staff seemed keen and friendly - the pub has just changed hands recently, so perhaps they're still finding their feet

Wow what a difference a day makes.New landlady (very charming)Spotlessly clean, warm + friendly, very relaxing.I believe they are going to do some sort of menu in the near future.Excellent news.Hope she does well,I like her, she will fit in very nicely with our locals, and I am sure with any newcomers. This is now a very, very nice pub.Good luck Nicola.

From the outside, a real cosy, country, locals pub amongst the terraces on a busyish cut through.

I've had mixed feelings about The Woodman, I spent a very enjoyable Christmas Eve there with friends many moons ago and had fond memories of it. I recently moved back to the area and have popped in there on 3 occasions. I agree with previous comments about uncomfortable seats and the music can be loud depending on where you are sitting. Not great for chatting and not really that comfortable to spend the whole night in.

I have never had a problem with the bar staff, they have always been courteous enough, although not that chatty but mates have said that they've found them to be rude on occasions.

Last time I was in, I found it to be terribly smokey, so looking forward to my next visit, which will be post smoking ban.

Fairly well presented and kept bitter although service could be described as being "with a snarl". Personal bug-bear - LOUD music blaring out from a multitude of speakers made conversation difficult. Not the sort of place to go for a quiet chat, at least not on saturday afternoon!

Has been getting better recently. New landlord (and lady) they should pop into the next road and have a chat with the landlord at the Crown & Sceptre as they seem to be getting it right. But heading the right way. i'll be back in a couple of months to see how it's going.

Not the sort of pub one would expect to find tucked in amongst the terrace houses of South Croydon. More like a small cosy country pub (with sport on the TVs of course) with a garden out the back. Mrs C and I have been popping in there on and off for years, and we've never seen food there other than crisps and peanuts. The beer and wine have proved satisfactory, as have the locals. The staff have always been efficient and courteous, although what may have been an Eastern European barmaid was quite reasonable in her presentation. There was no sign of any dog. Not a bad little pub, apart from the seating not being as comfortable as Mrs Codrotten's buttocks require.

Jack Beard wasn't in yesterday when I called, as I was the only customer in at approx 1.15pm. Nice traditional pub, but suffering at lunchtime as they dont do food, unlike the Crown and Sceptre in the next road ( Junction Road ).
Typically surly Eastern European barmaid - with resident fierce dog to match - but otherwise this was an excellent visit. Well worth calling in
