user reviews of the Fox Inn, Great Barrington

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

No hesitation, my rating for the Fox is 10/10. After an excellent stay there, I could not believe that it currently has a BITE rating of only 4.3/10. But having read the negative reviews, most of which seem to have been written by first timer reviewers who have never contributed anything else to BITE, I have drawn my own conclusions. I am sure that you will too ….

I think that it is time for a regular BITE reviewer to put the record straight ….

The Fox is in an idyllic rural location alongside the River Windrush. I cannot fault anything about the accommodation, the staff, the service, the food or the drink. Our room was tastefully furnished, very comfortable and spotlessly clean. The staff were all very friendly and efficient and our meals were freshly prepared, well cooked and nicely presented. Being tied to the Donnington Brewery, the choice or real ale is a little limited, but I opted to drink the Donnington Gold which was tip-top.

On both the (mid week) nights that we stayed at the Fox the car park was full and the bar busy, which is always a good indication of a good pub. We certainly look forward to staying at the Fox again in the future and I have no hesitation in recommending it …

Beautiful pub and great location. My family had a great lunch which was served promptly and well presented. Staff were all very friendly and helpful. We even asked the landlord if we could view the accommodation as we may return for a holiday to the area. The rooms were superb which we were told have been recently refirbished. We booked on the spot and will be returning in August. Would recommend this Pub to anyone who is passing by.

Beautifull Location. Downhill from thereon. Arrived 12.30 for booked Sunday lunch order taken at 12.50 and food came at 13.50, after we complained, many people turned up after us and got served first. Sat outside on benches one of which was broken. Waiting staff excelent. Manger was there one? Food grossly overpriced. Beer for real ale very poor. Have been many times before never again.

Beautiful location, but this is as far as the positives go. The Oddingtons beer (which I generally love) was off and in a very dirty glass, as was my wifes wine. She had to share the wine with the lipstick marks of the previous drinker. The barman was less than interested as we appeared to be interrupting his conversation with friends. The food was very expensive and very tasteless. The skills involved in undercooking eggs and microwaving what appeared to be (and tasted like) week old food were truly boundless. In addition to this I felt like I needed a bath upon exiting the pub. For anybody thinking of visiting this, what should be a lovely old world country pub I would suggest that they simply don't. I should have complained when I was there, as it was truly awful, but you know what us British are like. We would rarther pent our anger and frustration on a forum.

. Real Ale was off, barman wasn't interested! even the cola was flat.....
. Pub was dirty, floor sticky, tables wasn't clean
. Ploughman's was awful, the salad looked as if it came off someones else's plate!
. The fish and chips tasted good until my husband too some of the batter off. ONLY TO FIND THE FISH HAD BLUE MARKS ON IT. IT LOOKED LIKE PAINT OR SPRAY.

AND AGAIN THE BARMAN WAS NOT INTERESTED.

However, the waitress was miffed that I was taking photos of the blue markings of the fish

WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS PUB.

My recommendation is, find another country pub where the landlord IS interested in the patrons coming through their door. There are plenty out there

The first thing to say about this pub is that it is in Little Barrington, not Great Barrington. Only a mile apart, but different villages. Just below the Windrush Valley Cricket Club ground and alongside the River Windrush. Service for food and drink was take it or leave it -- which suggests the licensees have it too easy in a site which, on a sunny day, has a pleasant outside area. It is one of those Cotswold pubs in an idyllic situation which should be much better than it is.

Made a 6.5 mile round trip on foot to get here for a hearty meal and wasn't disappointed. Food and drink served all day. Is a racing pub with the horses on TV and racing pictures around the pub with a good mix of locals and visitors. One barman looked a little short so maybe a jockey. Are some gallops across the road. Is 15th century I think and would love to come back in summer to sip some cider in thier garden. Friendly dog too. Maybe stayed for one drink more than we should of, as took wrong turn on way home and ended up walking A40 in the dark

We went to this pub last week, and thought the atmosphere was fabulous, very friendly and comfortable. Food was proper pub grub, but well-cooked, and not trying to be a fancy restaurant like so many nowadays. We will definitely be going back.

Great PLace, proper old fashioned pub, with good homecooked food, and a lovely "olde Worlde" log fire bar, and beautiful beer garden and river, if weather's nice!!

I'm surprised to read these other comments as my experience couldn't have been more different. This is what i call a typical country pub - the setting is beautiful, the food was home cooked and very tasty and there seemed to be a lot of local produce on the menu. the staff were lovely and very friendly - we chatted to them and the locals for most of the evening. All in all, we had a very pleasant evening.

We orderd two Chicken Peri-Peri meals, sadly they wheren't the usual standard we had enjoyed in the Summer,
food was "just ok", not good value for money, chips needed another 5 mins cooking, the side salad was nonexistant, and we shared one chicken breast between two it was that small, with very little flavor.
The manager was shouting at his kitchen staff,in full ear shot of the customers.
The Fox used to be a great place for a good meal,
not any more,
We left feeling robbed, and wont be going back.

On A sunny day this looks like a nice pub with it's location next to a river, beer OKish.
If you want food, I would suggest that you can find much better value elsewhere. One slice of granary bread, two small rollmops, slice of lemon and a "little bit" of salad for 5.95 is not good in my books.

Ploughman's - slab of cheddar, third of an apple, half a tomato, one pickled onion, one slice of white bread, quartered and a few lettuce leaves. 8.

Well what a rip. Yet it was full. Why? Very poor pub.

Looks nice from the outside but is pretty shabby on the inside, the dining area out the back is poor as well. When we went to get some food the woman who was in charge could not have been more unfriendly or sour faced and the food itself was...well...in a word, Shite.
I have a real beef with pubs like this, pubs with crappy interiors, rubbish food and staff that obviously could not give a toss and then they charge you 10 or more for a meal.
If you are hungry or thirsty go to the Inn for All Seasons just up the road, the food there is outstanding and the landlord is a gent, otherwise known as a proper pub.
