user reviews of the George, Finchdean

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Brilliant beer line up (Broadside, Landload, Doom Bar), full marks there Staff were nice too ....
Unfortunately food was awful. I had a roast, the roast potatoes looked as though they were from the week before, burnt and disgusting.
My wife had the lambs liver (requested to be cooked pink) and bacon with crispy pancetta. The liver was overcooked and the pancetta (crispy or otherwise) and bacon were non existent.
When asked at the end 'how was it' we told them. The waitress said sorry but nobody came and gave a real apology or even offered a free coffee as compensation.
Will not eat there again, although I will be tempted to go for the lovely beer selection.
Very disappointing.

Disappointing menu.

The landlord who looked like a dodgy second-hand car salesman seems to have departed. The new regime may actually care about beer quality so I think I may visit more often.

Since my last posting, they seem to have changed the chef!
The food seems to be of a far better quality. The welcome is still as friendly.
It's amazing what a change a good kitchen can do.
Jazz on a Wednesday is still going strong.

Having no axe to grind and no grievance against anyone, I am here to give a nice honest opinion.
I read the previous negative comments before deciding to come but because I was in the area anyway I thought wed give the place a go.
I entered a clean but cosy pub that allowed dogs. That pleased me because it gave the impression of a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere. After my first drink I moved to a conservatory area which was light and airy and had a lovely view of the garden.
I ordered apple mash, pork medallions and garlic and cider sauce - it was amazing!
We didnt stay for dessert but we are planning a trip back very soon with the whole family, well worth the drive out!

Must be two george inns in finchdean now??? having read some previous posts nearly never went to the george inn for fear of what we would be greeted by!!! well to put the record straight, our last visit to the george was 13/11/09 and on all previous occasions have enjoyed great meals and attentive staff, Last night returned and had a meal at the george inn and was greeted by the same friendly staff and great service! food was good quality and large portions, dont really understand some previous posts maybe a bit of bad feeling?? so having read my review if you dont want to go there GOOD all the more room for us.

we celebrated my parents 25th wedding anniversary here in August 2009 we were taken back by the fabulous old time history features within the pub. we were greated with nice friendly smiles and he staff were very helpfull and professional,Our food was un-faultable
Then....
My partner and i got engaged in Nov and with my lasting impression that i received from the George on my last visit i called them and asked if they are available for private functions, The land lord was more than helpfull, he discussed buffet menus and entertainment that they have used within the pub before. It sounded good. The night of our party was not good it was AMAZING we had an open log fire greeting guests, the food was again as lovely as we last remembered, the entertainment was for everyones required taste.
Most of my guests even complimented on the venue, entertainment and food I would highly recommend this pub to everyone i know, it is deffinately worth a trip here.

I am not suprised at some of the previous comments. Despite a friendly welcome and a roaring fire. While I was there, three people complained about the quality of the food on offer. A portion of fish served at a table, two away from where I was sitting, smelt so "off" that if it had been served to me, it would have been sent straight back to the kitchen!

I am the landlord of this pub and am extremely disappointed by some of the recent posts. I actually presumed that the site existed in order for people to review the pub, not to make malicious attacks upon past and existing staff.
The post from 'Joans' is disgusting, the one from 'bobsyouruncle' while more sympathetic to the pub is still seriously out of order by making personal attacks on ex members of staff. Will the owners of this site please remove these posts as soon as possible. I consider these remarks to be libelous.

Hi, this is emily, the previous chef of The George,
i thought this was suppose to be a review website, but obviously not!
As much as i have appreciated the good things that have been said about my cooking, i am also disgusted at the way some people obviously have too much time on their hands, as to slate members of staff.
The George has always, as long as i can remember had a good reputation as a destination pub and always will.
I had to leave this employment due to personal circumstances(of which is no-one elses business),and as for being a drunk? Well, maybe i used to be!
As far as i am aware, from friends of mine that still use The George, the food and the beer are still of excellant quality. So if any outsiders are reading this please do not knock it untill you have tried it.

Well, what can i say, what a foul woman who posted the review just before. I am a regular at the George and having nothing but praise for the new owners, they have totally turned the place around after the previous owner managed to ruin it almost beyond repair. Just to point out a few facts, the bear has gone down in price since the new owners have been in there, i have not had a bad pint from here for nearly a year and with the amount of people coming in these days i would be surprised if the beer sits there for 3 days let alone months, maybe you need to contact the brewery? In regards to the staff, all the waiting staff are the same as always, i don't understand bring back the "jolly staff", they are still there, the only changes are the drunk chef has left and a miserable little thing that worked in the kitchen was sacked. And in my own opinion, the staff did not used to be fun, under the old owners the landlady looked like a bulldog chewing a wasp and was a moron! The prices were higher and the beer was cr*p. So, in a quick summary, all of your "facts" are simply not true, I'm sure anyone with half a brain reading your review will ignore it due to the child like grammar abilities of the poster. (appalling spelling!). I refuse to take someones opinion into account when they can not spell the simplest of words. Thank god for the new owners, better chef and lovely staff, and may i say Anne (the new landlady) is an angel, specially when compared to the previous "thing".

well that didnt take long did it? went for a meal couple of months ago (under new management) and the meal was out of this world the lady chef knew what she was on about and her food was out his world, we went back last friday for a meal and well the welcome was a sour faced women which we were told was the owner and didnt have 2 words to say except that would be 6.00 i nearly died at that price and it was the most vile pint of real ale i have ever tasted tasted like it was in the barrel for months -10 for the pint, then it came to our meal which i was looking forward to as i have always had a good meal there well dont know which was worst the pint the sour faced landlady or the meal, the food which we waited for over an hour was cold and tasted just as vile as the beer the young girl who waited on us didnt know where to put her face and had explained that the lady chef no longer worked there, well thats that wont be going there again shame as food was great staff used to be fun and prices were reasonable and a good tasting beer is what its al labout followed by a great meal which none of these were offerd, sorry folks bad move getting rid of the lady chef and friendly staff (replaced by a burger van chef and sour faced landlady you need to put her back in the offace and bring back the jolly staff)

I was brought up not far from this pub and it always had a decent reputation. Country walks or bike rides with my family would usually conclude at The George and the atmosphere was always good and food honest and tasty.

I had not used the pub in a long time and had heard that it had changed hands yet again in the very recent past. However, my memories of it were fond so I went for a meal.

First impressions were that not much had changed since the last time I had been here (over a decade ago). There are still old pieces of farming equipment displayed on the walls and hanging from the ceilings and there are old paintings of the local countryside and small villages within the locality. To me, this is no bad thing. Its a character pub in a rural setting Border Collie asleep in front of the open log fire, old guy sitting in his chair in the corner doing the crossword. That sort of pub.

That said, the bar was clean and tidy, the atmosphere was pleasant and staff were friendly (although it wasnt that busy).

By far the best thing about our visit was the food. The menu is a selection of classic home cooked pub meals (steaks, pies, mixed grills all the usual suspects are here) but some of them have interesting twists (the sausages come with a black pudding and leak mash for example).

I opted for Garlic Butter Tiger Prawns to start and the Steak and Ale Pie for my main and there are not enough superlatives to explain how impressed I was with it. The starter was excellent but the pie is possibly the finest I can recall having. The home cooked chips are also noteworthy. In fact, the only criticism I have is that there was far too much (it also came with vegetables which I couldnt finish) which meant no chance at sampling a dessert.

Because of the fantastic meal I would not hesitate to recommend a meal in this pub to anyone. Being local(ish) I will certainly be returning to see if the rest of the menu lives up the fantastic first impression.

I popped along here the other night for a nice relaxing pint. Oh well, my mistake. Over three quid for a second-rate pint of Young's Special, and I even had to ask for it to be topped up!

Couple that with the appalling piped music which forced most of the punters outside INTO THE RAIN (well, light drizzle, but rain makes for a better story), and you have a very disappointing pub.
mhanley - 16 Jul 2008 11:09
Had a lovely pint of Youngs Special in here the over day. Pub has a really great setting but is let down by a few small things, such as the cheap feel of the outside furniture, the fact that ice cream desserts are brought in little silver metal bowls (the like of which I haven't seen since Pontins in the mid 80s), the inside is looking a bit tired and behind the bar it's quite tatty, and the debit card machine wasn't working.

after reading the bad write up on this pub i was not to sure if i should take my girlfriend there for her birthday but to my surprise it was very relaxed and the staff were great, food was brilliant, i could not find any reason for the bad comments that had been written, if people had taken time to talk to the staff they would have found that to their surprise they are human and very frindly bar staff had good manners and the landlady was brill.

after having sunday lunch and eating good home cooked food and friendly staff i would recomend this pub to all my family and friends 100%

Regret that I did not look at this site before going. It was more or less empty. We had planned on a meal. Some people turned up with a very large red setter which smelled awful (raining outside). They were allowed to take the dog into the restaurant area. I asked if this was normal and told it was ok. Not wishing to eat next to a very smelly dog we moved on.

THE GEORGE AT FINCHDEAN WAS HORRENDOUS!!!!
It was also my mother's birthday and we had a very similar experience to Mrs Vickers.
Our starters were OK, but the main courses, bar 2 out of the 7, were disgusting - unedible.
When we complained to the landlord, and said we didn't feel we ought to pay for the meals we couldn't eat at all, he threatened to call the police!! He told us we had to pay because there was nothing wrong with our food (he never even came to see our food at the table!).
No one checked or asked if our meal was OK throughtout the whole experience. We suspect this was because they knew it was far from OK. Not only was the food disgusting, but the order was almost completely wrong. Again, no apology.
Because of the disgraceful attitude of the landlord, whose customer service was dreadful, we paid for our meal, just so that we could leave the awful pub.
We asked for a receipt, was given it, and was told we were barred - all because we dared to complain!
We very often go out on a Sunday evening and have NEVER EVER had this experience before.
Do not go there if you want nice food, nice people and good customer service!

I am a regular user of this pub and have always found the food to be excellent and the service first class!

It was my mothers 80th birthday and after hearing good reports about The Georges food decided to take the family there for a special evening meal. We waited a little over an hour for our starters, one of which we had to send back as there was no brie in a deep fried brie dish. No cutlery and no bread. After asking for these things the waitress grunted something under her breath and returned with cutlery and 1 very small slice of bread each-still no brie. After waiting nearly a further hour for our main courses and having our waitress in tears disappearing and not returning we decided to cut our losses and leave. The manager was dreadfully rude refusing to apologise and demanding we pay 60 or else. We left the pub shaken and frankly appalled by the horendous service and dreadful man running it. We will never return and hope you will not either!!
