We visited last Tuesday evening. Lovely pint of Dark Star APA and food simple and very good. Good banter with the bar staff... A most enjoyable evening.

Scruffy, but isn't all of Britain. There was a good choice of beers here when I visited, and the live music was good. Not bad, but nothing more than that. It was fine.

a decent enough pub to begin my crawl in chose not to use it for food as i had a few to get round, decent pint, friendly staff/clientel

enjoyable evening staff friendly but a young crowd food of a good standard will return.

Rude staff and very very expensive.

Large food portions but a bit scruffy inside to be fair.

Checquers is the best 'real' pub in Steyning. A half decent bottle of wine, at a good price. I prefer the saloon bar - probably unfairly, but I always think it's going to 'kick off' in the public bar! The food is of a high standard for pub grub - their sussex smokie is to die for! And friends have stayed int eh rooms twice - with no complaints, in fact, only compliments for the hearty breakfast!
The snug out the back is a great place to hideout iwht mates, but the courtyard isn't the most welcoming - serving mostly for smokers now....

I have mixed feelings about this pub....came for a meal 3 weeks ago and were impressed by the speed and quality of service, quality and quantity of food. However, having raved about it to all our friends we came back at the weekend and it was like being in a different place! Disinterested staff (one of whom chose not to serve me at the bar in favour of one of the 'regulars'), MUCH smaller portions of food that took longer to come out (despite being less busy than on our previous visit) and the quality wasn't as good either - the salad garnish on the plate had obviously been left out all day as it was all bone dry! To cap it all, when I left, I popped into the Co-op next door & happened to see our waitress buying a couple of packets of pate (two for 1.50) as they had 'run out at the pub'. Is this the "Pt of the day, served with homemade Cumberland sauce, toast & Salad", for 5.50?? So much for homemade food - and what a mark up!!! Wouldn't come back here for food - such a shame!

To "gphillman"

I live locally to this pub and am appalled by your comments.
I drink & eat in this pub regularly and know the customers and staff well. The ales in this pub are superb and very well kept, to the point that, it is a favourite with the local branch of Camra, the ale experts. Also, i happen to know that the food is all homemade with locally supplied produce, some is deep-fried, but only what should be, as with every other quality pub. Hundreds of people in the last three years have left comments like "fantastic, the best i have ever had, and that is just about certain dishes on the menu. This pub is what most other pubs should be, quality. You have clearly demonstrated that you really dont know what you are talking about and should keep your opinions to yourself. Well done the Chequer Inn, Steyning, keep up the good work.

A group of us stayed overnight and rooms were clean and well turned out. The beer was nothing special and we tried the Dark Star and Timothy Taylors Landlord , both were in poor to below average condition . The food in the Pub was all deep fried and format stuff supplied by Brakes Bros I suspect - not enjoyable , although the Armageddan breakfast is something to behold , you wont need to eat for the rest of the day , at least

Having stayed overnight here on four occasions I can thoroughly recommend
The staff are all v.friendly the beer superb and the breakfast out of this world !
I have always found the locals very friendly and wish it was my local [even though I live in New Zealand!]

You'll notice the place seems a little dark inside but there are views out onto the High Street where you can maybe catch a glimpse of what the locals are upto. A fair few real ales on and good sized meals.

Did I really visit the same pub as "kazzaren"? A pub lives or dies by how it serves its locals. It was also very welcoming to us three strangers. The staff certainly weren't rude and I can't say I noticed any odd smells. Sounds like someone has a grudge. The Dark Star Best Bitter was excellent too. It was also a nice cool refuge on one of the few hot days of the summer.

Rubbish pub. Very locals orientated. Smells of urine and rude bar staff. Don't even get me started on the food. No garden and dark as a cave in the summer. Avoid at all costs.

Good old locals pub, but fairly welcoming to others. Good for beer.

Hmmm, not the best pub in Steyning as some redecoration wouldn't go amiss!!! A bit dark & dingy personally ...

Previous comments dont do this pub justice.

A clearly unobservant comment followed by nothing of consequence from a drunken under-age idiot.

The new owners are spending a fortune doing the place up since Feb this year, turning it into what it should be, the best pub in town!

Pub Managers Ritchie and Chalky run a good bar with good ales and beers.
All idiots and have been barred and now drink in the Star down the road. No under-age problems at all.

2 Plasma screens in the public bar for sport, along with a rare 3/4 size Snooker table out the back and home cooked food in the saloon bar with a real log fire.

They do B & B and also do a really good breakfast menu every morning, easily the best breakfast in town!

Brilliant! 9/10.
