The Chequer Inn, Steyning

I have mixed feelings about this pub....came for a meal 3 weeks ago and were impressed by the speed and quality of service, quality and quantity of food. However, having raved about it to all our friends we came back at the weekend and it was like being in a different place! Disinterested staff (one of whom chose not to serve me at the bar in favour of one of the 'regulars'), MUCH smaller portions of food that took longer to come out (despite being less busy than on our previous visit) and the quality wasn't as good either - the salad garnish on the plate had obviously been left out all day as it was all bone dry! To cap it all, when I left, I popped into the Co-op next door & happened to see our waitress buying a couple of packets of pate (two for 1.50) as they had 'run out at the pub'. Is this the "Pt of the day, served with homemade Cumberland sauce, toast & Salad", for 5.50?? So much for homemade food - and what a mark up!!! Wouldn't come back here for food - such a shame!
