user reviews of the Black Horse, Climping

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

It's pretty easy to spot the dishonest reviews. Check to see if the poster has made any comments on any other pubs on Bite. If not, and they are glowing reviews, then there is a chance that they are employees of the pub, or mates of the Landlord. Google maps does seem to show a sign for the pub exactly where the poster said it was, but it's impossible to read the words fully.

How can you say I'm spouting rubbish? You weren't in the pub when we were there, no one was. And as you weren't there how can you say I'm a unpleasant person when you've never met me? If you are the type of person who frequents this establishment, you're not doing it any favors with you spiteful digs at people who do use B.I.TE. as it is intended. In no way was my review a personal attack, we were served an awful meal and as the landlord had no interest or understanding of customer service, we felt it necessary make other people aware of our experience.
Thank you and good night.

So I make a comment a miraculously three people are all interested in comments made about the pub?
1. I am not the landlord, staff, or have any other involvement
2. I joined to try to point out the rubbish you were spouting.
3. With your attitude I would be grateful if you stuck to drinking around Twickenham etc. You are obviously a pretty unpleasant person.
4. That sign you are talking about does not and has never existed,

I can tell you exactly what day I was in, Thursday 8th September 2011. Why would I write a spiteful comment on a pub I will never be going to again? What do I have to gain? I'm not a local publican, I'm only trying to stop honest people making the same mistake as we did. The food offer sign is at the top of the road at the junction with the main road.

Now, please try and use B.I.T.E. as it is intended to be used (as I have, please see my previous reviews) and not as a promotional tool for your own pub.

What a pathetically desperate, sad individual you are.

I agree with the last poster. 'Rammed all summer?'

No.

Mediocre at best and quiet. Fox joined BITE today, the guvnor?
randolf7 - 14 Feb 2012 21:52
box says a seat can't be got - all summer! what rubbish? often been in there on my own in the middle of the day. as 'ale ' says, food of low quality; change needed.
tradervic - 14 Feb 2012 21:44
If you have an issue with a pub/landlord it is very easy to post fake/hurtful reviews. If you are going to do that, as the previous reviewer so obviously has, at least try to make them believable.
This pub is very close to the beach at Climping...if you were "walking your dog in the summer" you would be very lucky to be able to get a seat in the pub as it is rammed ALL SUMMER. To be the only customer.....I think not. I know this pub very well and it has never done or advertised any food offers such as the one you mentioned...I should know...I live on the same street!!!
Please try to use B.I.T.E as it is intended to be used and not as a tool to vent spleen because you have some personal issues. What a sad individual you are.
FoxintheBox - 14 Feb 2012 21:28
After walking the dog along the beach popped in here this summer for some lunch.

I dont have a vendetta against this pub, only been the once, I'm not even from the area.

Went to the bar and there was no ale on and no other customers, that should have sent my pub-sense tingling. No bother, ordered Guinness and wine and 2 'fresh, home made' burgers. To say the burgers tasted like dog food is an insult to Pedigree Chum. Both plates went back to the kitchen with one bite out of each burger and the undercooked oven chips uneaten. Would have expected the manager to say something, but nothing. When my better half complained we were told the meat was fresh in today and what was our problem. He then shrugged his shoulders and walked off. Worst meal we've ever had. And to add insult to injury, when driving away up the lane saw a sign offering 2 for 1 on all lunches!! Not offered to us, AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

Reading these reviews it is obvious someone has a bet of a vendetta against this pub. That can be the only reason I can think that anyone wouldn't love it!
Visited yesterday and just had to leave a review.
Superb food (the T-bone steak was ridiculously good!) and when my friends mixed grill arrived there was hardly room on the table! The quality of the meat was excellent (I am a retired chef by the way) and all was very well cooked.
The staff were very friendly, drinks were fine (I am a cider drinker and my friend a lager drinker-cant really mess those up- so can't comment on ales) Really friendly crowd-PROPER ROARING FIRES!!! Food is not cheap but quality meant it was very good value for money. Will make the effort to visit again and hopefully get snowed in!! (Do they get snow in that area?) Ignore the spiteful reviews and make up your own mind. P.S What a great location too!!

very easy to spot that the last two posts are by managment/staff etc, just click on the user names,i would recomend looking at the previous posts before going there,a big fat zero for trying to con people out of hard earned cash with lies...

We visited this pub the day after the Royal Wedding, we were slightly concerned after having read some of the comments on here, but then realised that a lot of the comments were over a year old, and were very skewed towards the Oyster Catcher, which always makes me suspicious.
We arrived around 7.30, trade was medium, we were served quickly and efficiently. Prices were reasonable - I can confirm a real ale, lager and cider were around 10.
There were lots of specials on the board all between 11 and 14 for mains, and included Smoked Haddock, Lobster Salad and Crab Salad, as well as a lamb dish and pork belly. The normal menu was also available with 7 or 8 starters and a similar number of mains.
I had the Prawn Cocktal special, which was a large portion of fresh prawns and marie rose sauce, with a salad and bread, my friends had the Chicken Livers, which were excellent, and the Deep fried Brie, which was good too.
Mains wise I orginally ordered the Smoked Haddock, but was then asked if I would like to try the fresh Whiting, which I hadn't had since I was a child, it was coated in a herby crumb, which was delicious, and served with pan fried potatoes - it was amazing. Juicy meaty fish that fell off the fillet, delicious. My friends had the Pork Belly with mustard mash which was superb, and the Goats Cheese tart, with salad and new potatoes. We could not fault a thing
Service was relaxed and informal, yes the meals took longer than the standard 9 minute pub chain usual, but on the other hand they were individually prepared, and cooked to order. Let me think a quality home cooked professionally served meal, or a boil in the bag special - which would I choose ????!!!!!! Not a difficult decision.
The pub was 2/3 full, mainly diners, and we didn't witness a single problem.
We were in the area on holiday, and will absolutely return.
One further thing, Monday to Thursday, they do 2 themed meals, for example Roast of the day on Monday, and Fish and Chips on Thursday, with 2 glasses of wine for 20. Excellent value
Staff were organised, focussed and very friendly btw

Visited this pub on the day of the Royal Wedding - was a bit concerned by some of the reviews on here but as the last one was over a year ago, decided to give it a go.
Was given a very warm welcome by the staff who were very friendly. Drinks unlike what another reviewer said, are not overpriced and comparable to other pubs, roughly a tenner for 3 drinks. Good selection well served.
Food - one word fantastic. If you want boil in the bag stuff a la Wetherspoons, this place isn't for you. Food does take a while to arrive however this is because it's freshly cooked from scratch. Our party started with a Prawn Cocktail, sublime Chicken Livers, and a delicious ham parcels stuffed with cheese. Mains were Pork Belly to die for, a brilliant lobster, incredibly fresh, and substituting the salad for new potatoes was not a problem at all, and the most succulent steak I have tasted outside London. It was roughly 20 per head for the food, so not cheap, but the quality made this not an issue.
Noticed they are also doing 2 meals plus wine for 20 during the week, which if it's as good as ours is a bargain
Great to see, if the other reviews are to be believed that the pub has got it's act together- we really enjoyed it and will be returning

Nine of us went into this pub at lunchtime on a Tuesday in April. We ordered 9 pints of Harvey's, the only real ale on offer, to be told that they had run out. Nine of us left and went to the Oystercatcher, which although not brilliant, had three real ales, served a decent welsh rarebit and put 100 of our money into their till. A lesson for the management of the Black Horse!

Worst pub I've ever stepped into. The food was awful and ridiculously over priced, service was just as bad. Not a surprise, when I looked through the window of the kitchen it looked like there was a group of 10 year olds working in there. The oyster catcher offers a lot more, for a lot less. There was also only 1 type of ale on offer, after I looked on their website and read "a selection of beers". Don't waste your time, or your money.
Jeanette374 - 6 Mar 2010 17:48
The Black Horse may be OK for a meal, but if you're just looking for a beer, look elsewhere. It has the highest prices I've ever seen.

After reading some of the earlier comments I wondered whether to try this pub for a birthday meal, but as it is local to me I gave it a try, and was pleasantly surprised. Very scrumptous food, with perfectly mannered staff. The menu was a little short on choice but cooked to perfection which made up for it.Quiet and pretty setting.

absolutely excellent restaurant, food was exquisite, staff were first rate, could not have asked for a more perfect evening for the 34 of us.I don't know if you accidentally wrote a review about the wrong pub "yummymummy" but clearly as your name shows you have no sense of taste!

An evening meal for 23 people on 1 March celebrating a very special family 80th birthday. The service we received was first class, having given the manager our menu choices a week beforehand the staff were well prepared for our visit. Our food was served good and hot and was cooked very well and although a large party we were all served together and without any undue waiting. The choice of food offered was good and everyone enjoyed their meals. All the staff were very attentive, very friendly and helpful at all times and we were well looked after which undoubtedly contributed to what was a lovely occasion and much enjoyed by all. Thank you.
Beardsley - 2 Mar 2008 15:38
In a word, terrible. We were a party of 30 celebrating a christening. We took the time to collate everyone's orders before arrival so that we wouldn't have to wait (there were 12 children). The food took almost 2.5 hours to arrive! They sat us down and served starters, then made us wait ages for the mains. Our children were hungry and upset, this did not seem to bother them. They didn't apologise, or explain the situation at any time. They just left us to it. When we finally did complain, they suggested that it was our fault for being such a large group. In the end, we cancelled the dessert and left. They were not interested, or bothered at the fact that we were very disappointed. We were told that the manager had just quit, and that the owner was away at his daughter's birthday party in Leeds, and that there was no-one overseeing the pub. I have to say, that it did spoil an otherwise lovely family gathering. The staff were unhelpful, inexperienced and useless. Don't go there.

Lovely pub, excellent food, friendly staff. Food is reasonably priced for its quality - great for special occasions and Sunday lunch. Went with my partner's 85 yr old mum for mother's day and she loved it. Handy for walk along the seafront.

Always come here on our visits to climping, never had reason to be unhappy. Always been a 'food' pub as far as I can remember, remote pubs have to be these days.
petergoesrock - 23 Feb 2006 10:56
Used to be a pub, now a eatery with high prices and low quality + the staff are far too overbearing.
barryq - 21 Oct 2005 14:43
Popular pub with reasonable beer and food. Celeb spotting: saw the Sussex golden couple of Fatboy and Zoe enjoying a Sunday lunch here.
