user reviews of the Hangleton Manor, Hangleton

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I've been here a few times in the past couple of months and there's nothing to dislike. Good service, lovely building. The locals of Hangleton are very lucky to have it.

Been here several times this summer at various times and days and with different crowd. Everyone has been more than happy with food, beer, service and staff. My 4 year old has been with me on most occassions and we have been welcomed in the bar for pre-dinner drinks. (She is an extremely well-behaved child whenever we are out). The attitude of the landlord and his policies are refreshing and the high standards set are being maintained. If you want your kids to let of steam take them to Greenleas recreation ground just round the corner. However if you want a civilised Sunday lunch or meal at reasonable price then this is the place for you. Oh yes, love the fire pit table outside too. My favourite food pub this year! x

I would suggest that you apply for a further mortgage to buy drinks and food in this pub. Absolutely far overpriced. A big No - No on this one. Try the Downsman up the road about half a mile.. at least you will not get ripped off and the staff are professionals. Chas (Burgess Hill)

alexis_svenn they don't allow kids in the bar not the pub, its a small bar so unable and rightly so to allow children

Went to this beautiful pub on Sunday afternoon, after a walk in the country with some friends and 4 kids.

The barman asked us to leave or take the kids outside as he did not want children in the pub.

As I am not sure about the use of swear words on this site I can not speak openly about my views on this pub, but I am sure you get the drift.

The restaurant is beautiful, but the food is pony (and trap) and overpriced.

Good selection of ales

Me and my sisters took my gran here today, wow!! I wasn't disappointed, one of my sister arranged it and I didn't know anything about this place until today, very nice!! I would go back tomorrow if I had the chance!! The staff were friendly as other reviews have said, food was amazing, a tad expensive but well worth it!! Proper home cooked food which in most restaurants you don't get these days!! There were children there and they were well behaved, I have a child (who didn't come this time) but I would bring him with no problems, the only thing I would say if you are thinking of bringing them is keep them amused as I don't think it's the sort of place for them to run around screaming in!! Keep them supervised and don't let them get bored!!
There was a log fire going too, food came out quickly and didn't have to wait for too long, when it did my god!! The plate was huge!!! No need for a starter!!
I would rate this place a A+
The one thing I would say if you have children is go early as we went about 12pm and when we left around 1.30pm it was filling up, the car park had no spaces eathier. If your not bothered in it being busy go later but if you like it quilter then go around 12pm and it will be nice, I'm not sure on the evening I'll have to go and find out one day!!

This is a great place to eat and drink. The staff are very frendly and the moto is yes we can, the garden is a great space for couples or families as long asthe children are suppervised by there parents. good idea to do food all day what we have been waiting for.

Just been here for the first time, despite the fairly mixed reviews. We were entertaining my 84 year old mother-in-law and had quite liked the idea of visiting somewhere local. The bar staff (actually all the staff) were extremely friendly and very helpful (starting by letting the MIL sample the real ales to find the one she liked after she had ordered a pale ale on arrival :) ). There is a busy menu and it would cater for quite a few tastes. We found the food excellent and no mean portions. It's not going to win any michelin stars but fits nicely into the gastro pub/wheel barrow to get you home mould. I think the mother in law at least ate her own body weight in food. Would definitely recommend and envisage a return visit.

Havent been for a while - awful dinner. Obviously everything comes ready prepared to the pub and they just heat it up - no real chef required. Menu depressing and they no longer have the blackboard with specials. Cheaper and better to buy from M&S or any supermarket. PS however the merlot is great.

Great building with a lovely garden. I eaten here many times over the past 3 years.

The food selection is good and usually good quality. Service, although always friendly, could do with being more attentive.

People with children have to realise that there are others who don't want to have a drink or meal with screaming kiddies around them. I realise children like to play loudly and it's down to their guardians to make sure they are not a nuisance. I lose count of the times I see children left to run riot while the parents ignore them. That's why there are places geared towards kids with bouncy castles, play areas etc. Hangleton Manor isn't so I'm with the manager on this. Send 'em up chimneys I say ;) or take them to somewhere more appropriate like McDonalds.

Its apparent that Hovie is the manager of this pub! Sorry you dont like the comments left by others but thats what this sight is for.

I used to go in this pub but since the currrent owner took over I don't bother. As Bigburtha mentoned he is arrogant miserable and doesnt really like woking in a pub by the looks of it. Food has also gone down hill and its way over priced. Beer isnt that great either.

My advice would be to take a walk up the road for 5 mins and go to The Downsman, nice food, nice beer, lovely pub and really friendly owners.

"Lets hope the Hangleton Manor changes its manager soon as it could be a really nice pub again"
Ronnie456 - 5 Jun 2009 11:11
bigburtha, I actually have to sympathise with the management at Hangleton Manor, a great pub and much improved in the past 12 months. One of their biggest battles has been totally dispruptive, noisy& vandalising children. Not that it;s their fault, parents need to surpervise and engage with their kids. Not all people enjoy children. Hangleton Manor has battled to improve its garden for all and succeeding as far I can tell, and the food is great. So the morale of the story Bigburtha use your legs and go elsewhere!!!

Lovely setting, fantastic garden, that's about all I can say in its favour. The food is not good, overly processed and everything we ate today tasted like it came from a can or had just been nuked in an industrial microwave. Worst of all, it's a family pub that seems to actively dislike families and small children. The manager is moody and unhelpful, he refused to provide sun umbrellas for outside tables during a rain shower claiming there weren't any, which is untrue as we have seen umbrellas there before. His staff seem actively afraid of him and told us the evening food menu would start serving half an hour late because the manager was having one of his strops! On another occasion he shouted from an open window, face purple and puce with rage, yelling at the kids outside to play more quietly. Clearly he wishes he'd been born in the Victorian era when children were seen not heard. The overriding problem with this place is that it wants to see itself as a posh, fine dining establishment, when in truth it's no more than a very average pub-grub joint. If they embraced the family market with a little more generosity and appreciation it would be a much better place. And five pounds for a plate of kids pasta with nasty tomato sauce from a jar is a rip off.

looks as tho your not happy wherever you go "Concho" (see comments on Grenadier, Hove)

Do you know what? I thought this place was really good for a while. But I am sure a new landlord has taken it over and he is well rude. I Had a pint of premium larger (3.85 a pint) and it was flat when I complained and asked for another he was fairly rude, tried to blame it on the new bar staff then when he pulled me another it was just as flat and tasteless, so when I said that was the same he said "No one else has complained" Don't you just hate it when people say that? I mean as if that matters. Does that mean he thought I was lying and wanted to waste my time.......Give me strength.

Unfortunately because of this I won't go to this pub again (and I have been using it allot lately) as I don't appreciate being treated like I school kid. I am 38 and when paying nearly 4 a pint I do expect it to actually taste nice.

(and he has a moustache........sort of, more like bum fluff)

Mr HoveFamilyMan..where or who says its a family pub??? Great pub and restuarant, larger is good it keeps the larger louts away!! I love to sit in the garden and have a social drink without rowdy kids screeming and riding bikes. I say good on the new management who are making efforts to control these issues making it a much better place for ALL
wyeman - 17 Jan 2009 12:23
A family pub in a family area. Yes, selection of beer is not great (lager is dire), but the real benefit was the garden. Able to pop in for a beer, spot of lunch and let the kids run around. Disappointed to see sign put up last summer curtailing any kind of fun in the garden if you're under 14 (bearing in mind the amount of space available). As already said, a family pub in a family area, so you'd expect children to be playing in the garden.... wouldn't you.

In reply to bn3, It's a GK pub so what do you expect?

Went there recently with my young grandchildren. Nice pub but in the lovely garden it was a pity about all the dogs, older children playing ball games(some on bikes)- when you're having a quiet drink you dont want a ball wizzing past your ears - and dogs and young children do not mix.

After spending almost a million pounds on the refurbishment The Hangleton Manor sadly seems to have been made worse. No longer a traditional country pub with a good range of ale- now it is an unappealing restaurant with a bar. Ale range has been reduced (now only Badger Beers) and prices increased. On the plus side there is plenty of parking.
CAMRA_till_i_die - 9 Jul 2007 17:27
Recently taken over by Hall and Woodhouse, Badger Beers."Done up".Doesn't work for me I'm afraid. Although
the building is old, the inside has been done out in what I call "fake" old. Mixing contemporary Ikea style lamps next to "old" copper kettles.......NO!
But the worst part are the prices!! 3 for a pint of Hopping Hare bitter!!
Out of principle, I won't be back......3 a pint,they're having a laugh.
trevor2121 - 28 Feb 2007 22:43
WOW!- what a wonderfully characteristic refurbishment, with a superb restaurant and easy dining. Superb atmosphere re-worked so traditionally! Traditional ales an added bonus! Much deserved for a 15th century manor.

A nice pub with three bars the front bar is old style and fits in the lovely with the grade one listed building the back bar has a juke box pool table and sky TV and backs on to the large garden and patio both with ample seating the third is used for private functions they normally have a choice of two real ales on offer and it has been in good condition when I have visited its a bit pricey this pub lacks something for I me I always want to move on
uwho - 20 Sep 2006 00:42
Beer is OK. Garden not bad. Nowhere else nearby is any good.
hrse12 - 31 Jul 2006 23:14
Back bar is a bit rough but the front bar has a real "country" pub feel. Its very cosy and has a lovely atmosphere. They've a few real ales on tap and there's no music or fruit machines so its a good place to sit and chat. Own off road parking and a huge garden out the back.
