user reviews of the Churchillian, Portsmouth

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Dated and situated at the top of Portsdown Hill which has a spectacular view overlooking Portsmouth and South Downs National Park- needless to say, as is the usual case in Britain- the pub does not take advantage of these possibilities and is set a little way off the road so you have to stare at the roar of cars rushing by. Inside- forget it- tasteless and kitsch brewery joint run by college kids- all plastic menus and much the same as your typical Brit boozer. 3/10

visited few weeks ago late lunch time. food was passable but not worth the high prices. seems like the view is worth an extra 2 a plate here. beer and selection ok. staff not particularly attentive but as suggested its a tourist buzz here.

microwave food, screaming kids(lots of them), like a licenced macdonalds without the charm 1/10

Good beer and service was my experience but very average food and not the cleanest of pubs to eat in. But the views...

good quality basic food. Much better than almost every pub in portsmouth though not restaurant standard. lots of barstaff so service was above par but not amazing. nice pub to take visiting family etc as there were no yobs like most portsmouth pubs have.

We have been to the Churchillian quite a few times, but when we went in August 07,we were very unhappy with the service. There were four of us and bought drinks before we sat down to look at the menu. We chose what to eat, and went to the bar to order oviously waiting while people were served with drinks.

When it was our turn to be served, the barmaid decided to answer the phone behind the bar, instead of taking our order. She went out to the back to take the call, leaving one member of staff to serve. Since when does a phone call take priority over customers who are actually there waiting?

While she was out, more people came to the far end of the bar for drinks.
When she finally returned to the bar, she went straight to those people in front of her at the far end, instead of resuming at the food end where we (and another disgruntled customer) were still waiting. We did write to the Manager, but were ignored by him as well!

I know the view is nice(when you are allowed to sit inside at the window area), but it has to be backed up with decent basic service.

The view has always been the mainstay of this pub. Have visited it on and off for many years. Visited it again after 4 years and the carpets still niff. Often a problem with bikers taking over the bar at times, bit intimidating being whacked in the back with helmets if you get in their way. Food prices VERY high for nothing special. Sitting outside on a sunny day looking at the view compensates.

Pub is on the crest of the hill with great view. Traditional style, friendly efficient staff. Beer good, food good value and quality. Most people were eating when I visited but then it was a sunday lunchtime. Recommended.

Great view of The City of Portsmouth. Staff friendly and attentive. I recently booked out the window view seats for my mother's 80th birthday. Good food all greatly appreciated. Beer good too. Recommended. Thanks to manager and her staff.

One of the best view a pub can have... I can't say I've eaten here but this place has a good beer, or two, or three! (and then a very easy stagger downhill home)

Can only agree with the previous review. Great pub come resturant, nice to visit with a hangover on a Sunday afternoon whilst having lunch. A hidden gem.

This Pub sits with commanding views of Portsmouth, the Isle of Wight and the Solent and at the rear you can see several miles of countryside dotted with towns, villages and the southdowns in the distance! they serve up fantastic grub and have real ale on hand pump. when the weather is beautiful there's no better place to spend a lazy summer afternoon or evening. and it's named after Winston Churchill!
