please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Closed at the moment. The windows are whitewashed. Not sure if it's permanent or if they're having a refurb.

We called in here on a rainy afternoon when we were looking for Sunday lunch and enjoyed the atmosphere, drinks and food so much we stayed all day.

Decent selection of real ales and the food was great - we were a little put off with the wording of the Sunday lunch as it sounded a bit different from the traditional but what came was a typical Sunday lunch, one of the best I've had for a while in fact. The music was pleasant but not too loud and the bar staff were friendly and helpful. Can't recommend it enough.

Having now tried the food here I can recommend the various mezze platters. Good value for money and friendly service!

I agree with Hotfoot. We live just down the road and have visited this pub a couple of times. The place doesn't seem to know what it is- they have a beautiful building with some gorgeous period features which has been decorated in a rather odd pastiche of styles (really nice middle eastern lamps and a few rugs, framed Parisian-style Art Deco posters). There are both pizzas and a very intruiging selection of mezze stuff on the menu. Two real ales (Landlord and Pride) are on offer, though not very well kept, and they have the full gamut of other stuff from lager to cocktails and a big coffee machine. It's usually pretty dead on a weekday evening, but I've heard live music coming from upstairs and there's usually a crowd outside on the weekends enjoying the sun.

Anyway, weirdnesses aside it's a friendly enough place. Like I said, beer isn't great, but I'm looking forward to testng out the menu someday and if I wanted a decent pint I'd go down the road to the Jolly Butcher anyway. The Bird Cage is good for a bog standard lager in the afternoon sun and for watching the locals coming out of Morrissons.

eight pounds for a bottle of kopperberg cider and a Tim Taylor landlord,6/10

I stopped off in here last night while waiting for my Mrs' delayed arrival at the station.

I'm not sure if its run/owned/managed/cheffed by Turkish people, but there seemed to be a few around and a strong theme on some of the menu items. I didn't eat, but the menu looked reasonable and well-priced.

However, they only had one ale on, and 3.40 for a pretty insipid pint of Landlord is frankly disappointing.

When I went, there was some downbeat tunes playing, and the atmosphere in the cavernous space was a bit sad. I think they have live music upstairs, and there is an attempted trendy edge to the place, albeit fourth-generation-faded-photocopy style.

Not dreadful, but I did find the place ever so slightly depressing (and I was in a good frame of mind before and after visiting)

The place has improved a lot since changing hands recently. Nothing worth writing home about, but they do have Landlord ale, so this is where I go when I get the hankering for a pint.
Treevesy - 12 Feb 2010 18:20
Best avoided. Why?

1). The place could do with a wipe down. A bit worrying when your pint sticks to the table.

2). Not much of an atmosphere, not much of a range of ales.

Not the worst place in Stoke Newington, and this place is technically my local but with so many better options in and around the area I just walk past these days.

This pub has changed a lot in recent years, current owners have brought back food which is great, sunday roasts are a highlight (the place used to be dead on a sunday: they used to open the doors for us about 3pm!). Still a good place for a quiet drink most of the week, friendly bar staff if a little slow at times. I went there on a thursday though and they have this old DJ guy who seems to attract hordes of wannabe trendies from church street - probably best avoided if you don't have a silly hat.

There's something about the Birdcage I really like, the staff are friendly (particularly the barmaids) the beer is always good and the atmosphere is pleasant. Always a good spot for an after work pint with friends or the newspaper.

NIce pub and good range of beers and other drinks. Good to see food being served there at last! Was always a shame to have had to leave to get something to eat.

Paying extra for the sauces with the food seems like a wierd thing to do. Friend had a veggy burger, which wasn't brillant. On a personal note not a big fan of the huge chips, way too much potatoe almost like a roast potatoe!

Toasted suasage sandwich was nice and will be having that again.

I do believe the Cage is returning to its glory days. Hurrah! The colour is getting better bit by bit. The drinks are great, the staff are friendly. Bit of a shame if you forget it's quiz night, stumble in and were wanting a chat, but that's the luck of the draw I guess. What's this: a lock on the toilet door, a mirror in the Gents? Hand dryer is still crap though. i'm currently out of town and can't wait to get back for a few xmas drinks or ten.

No food at the moment unfortunately, but the nicest place in N16 for a quiet drink. Unlike the owners and management, their prices haven't changed in over, i think, 2 years and while it can never compete with the rochester on prices, at least you get change out of a tenner for 3 pints and that ain't bad. Great selection of spirits and the cocktails are cheapish, but the menu could do with a refresh. i'm not sure about the new colour scheme though.
theoverhead - 15 Aug 2008 11:50
The manager "surly"? Surly not (geddit!!).
LemonGrass - 22 May 2008 16:53
Nice pub, but as others have commented, it is a bit on the pricey side. The bar staff are friendly, although the manager seems a bit on the surly side, but perhaps it was just an 'off night'. Nice atmosphere with some quiet corners for more intimate conversations. The music quiz on a Tuesday is good fun and Mel the quiz mistress does an excellent job with it. Just wish we'd win it once in a while.
buster_gonads - 18 May 2008 15:23
Agree with the duffman2, though I like it because it's a distance from Church Street.

Shame they've stopped doing food
LemonGrass - 25 Jan 2008 18:10
Nice decor and good service. Staff all lovely and helpful even at busier times. Have to agree at tad pricey for where is it, more tottenham than church street.
duffman2 - 7 Jul 2007 16:24
Modern but warm, great staff, great locals. Tad on the expensive side but all in all a lovley place.
J.morgan - 14 Mar 2007 12:02
Stands out in the barren windswept pub landscape that is Stamford Hill/Stokie high st. Quite nice inside, good sofas, and a decent crew drink there. Staff are up to good standard, as is the food. Drinks expensive though, cos like most pubs that boast polished floorboards and brass instead of stained carpet, its a little bit up its own arse. If your in the area pop in its alright.
billy_bunter - 30 Mar 2006 15:50
classic boozer. I moved to stokie the week before it re-opened after the refurb back in 2001. It used to have the most beautiful girl working there, jess, people used to come for miles...
sollish - 19 Oct 2005 17:39
Not as nice as the Londesborough in terms of location and general polish, but still good in terms of getting a seat and the music's normally good. Bit loud sometimes
anonymous - 2 Sep 2005 13:54
The roasts are so huge
my girlfriend and I could share
one and feed her dog.
Haiku_Dave - 17 Aug 2005 15:24
This is a great local to have - the music is always spot on and the staff friendly and chilled. Would recommend it to anyone who happens to find themselves in the area.
newnew - 28 Jul 2005 10:10
alright pub, and yeah the prices change depending on who serves you....weird, but ok if its low more than its high i suppose....

badger13 - 7 Jun 2005 12:31
This pub could be just the thing Stoke Newington/Stamford Hill needs apart from the moody staff and the very slow service. The drink prices differ depending on who serves you and the staff (who appear to be Hoxton rejects) seem incapable of smiling. Its part of the Londesborough/Talkbot group of pubs but is the worse by far!
anonymous - 20 May 2005 13:46
Good beer, bit pricey but nice large central bar layout makes for pleasant feel. Recommend although haven't been on the weekend.
danrkelly - 4 May 2005 14:39
Really good pub with friendly staff, good music and good food. Can get quite packed (just like the Londesborough)
Tomster - 8 Dec 2004 20:36
This is a pretty decent boozer. Open till midnight fri/sat. Large and airy inside with lots of big wooden tables and comfy leather sofas. Food not bad, meat plates, veggie plates, lamb burgers, fat chips, that sort of thing. My main complaint is that they sometimes play really shite music far too loudly. It's a pub not a club night for gawd's sake. Bar staff can often be slightly too aggressive at chucking out time.
SF - 1 Sep 2004 11:20
Great bar, great staff, crap hand drier, too many men.
Andy - 24 Feb 2004 21:42
Nicely decorated with pictures of old ladies and sofas on the wall.
Quite lifely at the weekends and lot' s of young people. Not my favourite..but worth a visit.
Blune - 27 Jan 2004 17:24
cool pub, open till late fri/sat - friendly staff and a great atmosphere.
peter - 29 Dec 2003 08:38
Favourite pub in Stoke Newington - not pretentious like the others. Wicked food, comfy sofas and excellent music.
steph - 3 Nov 2003 14:40
This pub's alright, proper beer, nice food, I think it's probably "gay friendly" rather than exclusively gay, definitely a mixed crowd. I thought offensive or irrelevant comments were meant to be removed?
Pauly - 20 Sep 2003 12:17
I thought there was something odd about the atmosphere... tsk! Us straight people are so inobservant.

That said, we were tucked away in a corner enjoying a beer and the music really is good.
G - 16 Jun 2003 16:00
it appears to be full of homosexuals and degenerates this birdcage pub.See you all there after work
nigel kelly - 29 Apr 2003 15:21
The Birdcage is a fantastic renovated pub in Stoke Newington. It has an excellent range of spirits, serves very good 'gastro pub' food at slightly under gastro prices and has a DJ who plays an eclectic mix of mellow tunes each night. Since it's reopening under a new name about 2 years ago it has become the most popular pub in an area populated by drinkers.
