user reviews of the White Horse, Steyning

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I think bars like this do have their place, but what a shame to turn the White Horse pub into "White's" bar. Tired-looking teenagers serving over-priced drinks. Sterile atmosphere. Perhaps I'm just getting old, but these types of pub conversions are not a patch on their previous incarnations.

We went in here on Saturday 30th at 3.15pm for a quick drink.I had a lovely pint of Tully's English Ale which was tasty and only 2.8%.My other half had a half of Cider which was good. Our dog was allowed in the bar area. The pub had a good few people inside and outside. We sat outside at one of the tables. The drinks cost 5.35 which is pricey. The pub looked smart, spacious and modern although i am wary of pubs that get the Heritage pastel shades paint job in satin or eggshell finishes. We enjoyed our drinks and if we were in Steyning again would consider going here to try the food.

As a relative newcomer to the delights of real ale I would like to see our local pubs offering at LEAST one guest ale. We have fabulous local breweries on our doorstep in and around Steyning so why is it so difficult to get a locally-brewed pint on the high street??

I would take issue with Alezilla's assumptions about the food at the White Horse, and Whites (the accompanying restaurant). Both offer beautifully presented and delicious dishes using locally sourced ingredients. You need only to pop into the open kitchen to see that there is not a "Brakes Brothers" product to be seen. Perhaps you would benefit from putting your wallet where your mouth is, sir!

The previous reviewer who labels this as a 'class establishment' has obviously been missing episodes of upstairs downstairs. Surprise surprise, Greedy King are here again with their latest incarnation of the 'old barn turned into sophisticated bar' joint... Yes, its actually fairly relaxed and it is certainly clean, but slipping a kleenex under our pints will do little to transform this place into the Champs Elysee or mitigate the shock from the prices that are higher than chanctonbury ring. Choice of beer is ok and its perfectly well kept, and the food has yet to be sampled, but no doubt it is delivered in perfect portions in a huge lorry at 4am along with all the other Greene King orders from Brakes. Think i will keep a tight hand on my wallet rather than put my theory to the test. I was delighted with the manager as he wavered on serving a local hooligan clearly smashed out of his brains and then proceeded to have an altercation with him which spilled out into the car park. Yes, classy, but not enough to get more than a wetherspoons....5/10....

Recently moved to Steyning, and really love this place. It has great food, a great drinks selection and although not the cheapest place worth every penny! We love fishy Friday and the steaks are delicious.

Ha ha thats quite funny. I am not actually an employee of the pub, if I was I would possibly vary my name a bit, dont you think. Come and meet me if you dont believe me! I work in Hendon north London for the NPIA.

I just like the pub, and don't think that some of the reviews it gets on here are fair, I think they are just locals thats maybe dont like that sort of pub. They like there pubs to be old and dark and rather smelly.

Anyone esle think Concho is an employee of the White Horse.

I am not jealous, just telling it how it is!

Liking your comments Paddypint!
PubbCrawlerOne - 30 Sep 2010 16:49
I don't get these last few negative comments. I recon they are just from another jelous pub. (Pathetic) The screen for the kitchen is quite a good idea, lets you see the food being prepared and shows that there is nothing dodgy going on with the stuff that you are about to eat, just like the open kitchen in the actual restaurant meaning that they have nothing to hide and that they are proud of there produce and the cleanliness of there establiashment.

I would rather see what is going on in the kitchen on a TV screen than watch coronation street or a load of overpaid chavs kicking a football around for 90mins. (you can stay at home for that surely)

Dull isnt the word for this pub, its a pub that a lot of others should take a leaf out of. But on one negative point I must admit that the cocktail selection is way overpriced in here. Some of the cocktails are 2 more expensive than a proper cocktail bar in Brighton. I mean it is a pub at the end of the day.

Also in all the years I have frequented this pub I have never experienced rude staff ever in fact they have always gone out of there way to be very helpful.

Food is top notch.

I have never experienced rude staff ever. Anyway this is a class establishment. Cocktails are a tad over priced though, more expensive than Brighton prices.
concho - 16 Aug 2010 22:56
Very very very rude staff.

Extremely expensive and all there food is not locally sourced, it is from the Co-Op on the high street.

Trust me on the food, I know someone who used to work there.
PubbCrawlerOne - 13 Aug 2010 12:17
Ate and drank here - did not like the food, but there was a pizza restaurant associated with the pub which is probably better.
Passing_By - 11 Jul 2010 18:31
A modern gastro pub. Very nice, very relaxing, clean and well kept. Food and drink will match the setting, but then its worth it.
Adrian_S - 29 Jun 2010 13:40
In on word - expensive!

We love this newly refurbed pub/restaurant and always enjoy a delicious lunch there. Have been with a large group (including baby), small groups or just the two of us and have always been extremely happy with our food , surroundings and the food.
Love the open plan kitchen and the lunch time sharing boards.

i visited today for lunch with 2 friends heard lots about but never been and enjoyed everything about the place really friendly warm staff and love the fact that you can see into to kitchen as they have tv showing all the goings on.food was well presented, hot and very tasty will go again in the near future fantastic!!!

I love the White Horse - it's a bar rather than a pub, and definitely more for quaffing wine than swilling beer! A bit pricey but you pay for the whole experience so we tend to have one nice bottle of wine in the white horse then move on to one of the other pubs in Steyning for some cheap grog before heading home! Even the toilets are posh - and very clean which makes a nice change! (Yes, I'm a bit of a girly).

Here here Ronnie456, Great food great service great booze great. I am a regular and it truly is my favourite pub/restaurant ever. Good on ya Mr White.
concho - 16 May 2009 14:59
Came in here recently with 4 friends and had a fantastic meal, the steaks were impeccable (what was in that sauce it was by far the finest I have ever tasted). Many pubs could learn a thing or 2 about food if they came and sampled there fare. Service was first class more of a Michelin stared restaurant than a country pub; wine and beer were also of the highest standard. I can find no fault with this establishment what so ever. The restaurant was at full capacity and they were catering for a private dining occasion upstairs of 37 people and every one of our meals came out as if we were being catered for personally. The location of the white horse is also fantastic sitting in a prime location in lovely West Sussex town of Steyning.

Closing comment: Why bother going anywhere else! With this place here it eats up the competition, I love it well done.

Ronnie456 - 16 May 2009 14:55
Trendy, over-priced and over-rated. The barman and his stains (guess they only have one shirt each then? Maybe they spent the clothing allowance on nice taps??!) could bore from 300 feet, and they all look like they've just come back form being extras in a zombie movie.
Totally devoid of character and charm, but of course, it's each to their own. The place to go if you want to feel 'cool' but traditional pub fans will most likely hate it!!
auqeam - 12 Oct 2008 19:29
Lovely refurb but way too overpriced
kazzaren - 12 Aug 2008 10:33
Too upmarket for my liking. Would not visit on a regular basis and food was over-priced for what it was. Nice taps in lavotories i'll admit.
TheSensiblePubReviewer - 21 Jun 2008 11:11
More modern of the pubs in Steyning. Is a restaurant area, but you can also eat outside if that is full up.
aleman - 21 Jun 2008 11:08
What can I say, this is one of my favourite pubs in the whole of Sussex. Beer excellent, food excellent, surroundings are outstanding, and the staff are very attentive indeed. The owners have got it right and are themselves very pleasent indeed. And they cook a superb Steak. Massive variety of drinks at the bar so they can cater for everyone.

Needless to say I am very pleased as are all my friends and family that I have taken there.
concho - 5 Feb 2008 13:14
Sent here by the AA Pub Guide 2007, but a mistake. Beer indifferent, service terrible, a place "to be seen" but not to enjoy. The recent re-fit has positioned it to appeal to monied Yuppies.
HenPen - 25 Jul 2007 18:30
Full of snobs and bores.
timkholman - 10 Jul 2007 19:23
This pub has its place (maybe the centre of New York?).
However it will prob do very well in Steyning, I think there are people who like this Yuppi type place, clean and very expensive. If you seek a well kept real ale and a chat, Avoid!
yardale - 10 Jul 2007 18:58
Incredible transformation, just what Steyning needed. The restaurant is fantastic - its just great to be able to have somewhere I can take my friends outside Brighton. First class!

Hadn't been to the White Horse for a number of years, returned to find a good selection of lagers and poor selection of ales.

From here it all went a bit downhill, the decor was a bit of shock, the white horse of old was a tobacco stained youth club, the new white horse is a homage to all things bright and shiney which sits rather awkwardly in an old village pub.

The service is pretty unforgivable (had to wait ten minutes to get served whilst the two malnourished barstaff struggled with a coffee and a cocktail).

Whilst I haven't had a chance to sample the offerings on the restaurant menu, the main pub menu is limited to the chef's half-arsed attempt to drag the ploughmans lunch kicking and screaming into the 21st century; a selection of meats, breads, cheese and rocket salad on a chopping board, rustic food at pretentious wine bar prices, but if you're looking for decent pub food look elsewhere.

I live locally and have to admit that last night was the first time I went into the new White Horse. Wasn't too sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised - kind of felt like Sex & The City had come to Steyning! Asked for a Cosmopolitan cocktail which tasted delicious - they also sell Tuaca in there which was a complete surprise to me! Good decor but maybe a bit too much for Steyning?
clare_giggles - 29 Dec 2006 10:32
Really like this pub - very trendy, no smoking which is nice. they do great cocktails!! and they sell Tuaca!!
FiMcB - 29 Dec 2006 10:32
Oh dear. What was a pub, in need of some updating maybe, has now been transmogrified into a garishly bright, minimalist city centre style attempt at a trendy bar. Hardly any comfy seating, doesn't sell any crisps or similar and has the nerve to charge 3 for a watery tasting excessively cold pint of Ruddles!Totally unsuited to the location Well done Greene King - Not! Steyning now only has 3 pubs I'm afraid.
