I've generally found the Blackfriars reasonably congenial. But one Saturday in mid-November I wandered in. No-one behind the bar. An individual seated at a table close by put down his paper, got to his feet and went there. I requested a pint. It was poured, handed over, paid for and change given. And, though I made some attempt to speak to him, he uttered not one sound.

Curmudgeonly in the extreme and, I suspect, the boss.

Really has put me off.

Went there in April 2013. Big old barn of a place. Good beers and pleasant staff, locals also very friendly. Worth a visit.

Reasonable enough ale house with a number of decent ales on. A bit worn around the edges though beer was okay and the old bloke who seemed to run the place was pleasant enough.

Still up for sale, still a good selection of ales for Scottish breweries. On the night: Inveralmond, Strathaven, Orkney, Cairngorm, Cromarty. Even more ciders. Friendly and with a very good band that night.

Great selection of scottish beers, pub a bit rough and ready but friendly enough. Large sign outside pub up for sale/redevelopement as the landlord is retiring. No doubt will become flats etc...

We turned up on a night when the group failed to turn up. I think it was the landlord who stepped up to the plate with his guitar and country&western music, a style of music I can't stand. I'm sure it's much better when the bands DO turn up but we stayed just for the one pint before crossing the road....

A good size, traditional pub located just off the main shopping street. Its a single room, U-shape bar, with the left hand side geared up for bands, open mic nights, etc. with speakers and an open area in front.

The flooring is rough wood, and there is wood panelling to waist height around the walls. Theres a plethora of beer mats on the wall, presumably showcasing beers that have been served up here in the past. The wood panelled bar counter is at the back on the right. Adjacent to this is a fruit machine and a small fireplace with a wood burning stove. A solitary plasma was showing Sky News, but this was not obtrusive.

Music seems to feature quite prominently, with regular Saturday night band slots. These forthcoming acts were all detailed in the front of the menu which was unusual. Thursdays are also regular music nights, and often feature traditional accordions and bagpipes. This was the case on our visit, and the two guys on were very good, although they could do with improving their geographical knowledge if theyre going to converse with the audience (they thought Bristol was near East Anglia!).

There was a short pub grub menu, which was reasonable value with most of the mains being around the 7/8 mark. There was also a small specials board. We both had the haggis, and this was a decent, enjoyable dish, and very generous portions.

Good choice of beers on tap with Thrappledouser, Deeside Pale Ale No. 3, Orkney Raven, Crofters Pale Ale and Caledonians Deuchars IPA and Nectar. These were all listed on a board, along with a coming soon listing. Ciders were Westons 1st Quality and Strongbow.

Nice pub, a 'real' one with real people, and excellent real ales. We did not hang around for the Celidh, but I heard from others that it is very good. We only tried the beers, and no complaints in terms of quality or choice.

An excellent pub. A great selection of drinks, including six real ales, not to mention a large number of single malts! We went in every night, didn't try the food but it looked great! Very friendly staff as well. A lovely change from some of the frankl;y horrible Inverness bars.

Friendly welcoming landlady. The beer was well kept and although we had to wait ages for our food it was good - huge portions.

Oh and by the way the first photo is not of the pub but the second one is, and if you do call in and they have any beers from Rob Hill on, then drink them as thay are fab.

Thankfully this pub has been rescued by Del & Janette and is the best real ale pub in town, probably the best pub anyway with it's traditional layout, great beers, food, music, service and craic.

Spent a week in the area with work, and called in every evening. Good selection of Scottish and English ales, good food, good company, and the licensees were very welcoming. Definitely worth a visit.

good cheap food, no pretension, excellent beer. Best pub in Inverness.

Went for a lunchtime drink and was very quiet but well worth visiting to see how it has maintained its traditional appearance. Didn't eat but food menu looked very good. Will try and go there at the weekend next time I pass through Inverness.

Still the best (the only??) pub in Inverness, now an area where the drinking culture is infected by hotel bars and so called clubs. Lots of wood and decent seatings, a lovely cosy bar and good food. Range of super real ales includes several from Scottish breweries but during my visit also Cain's from Liverpool. Great folk session on this Saturday too.

Went during the day in midweek so was very quite. The beers were excellent, the staff very friendly & the food although basic was good.
doug_g - 12 May 2008 13:54
A bit quiet the night I was there and no live music. Beer was ok and beef stovies with beetroot and oatcakes was an interesting dish!
copnorsteve - 28 Oct 2007 12:56
Still an excellent pub, especially under the management of Dell and Janette. Thought it was a little quiet, during our week there, especially as there were plenty of tourists in Inverness. Dell seems to do just about everything, cooking, serving, and even singing and playing guitar.

This pub was sinking faster than the Titanic but i am glad to say things have improved dramaticly since christmas. On the eve of the Rockness festival they had eight hand pumps on the go, the beer has allways been a little cold but its not bad by any means.
Well worth a visit.
johnrhynie1 - 16 Jun 2007 21:36
this historic pub has gone through a few bad years, but the current management of Del/Janette, or vice versa, is just what is needed. They have a range of excellent, well tended, mainly highland, ales. The food is excellent, mainly genuinely home cooked, within scent of the bar. There are a good range of staples, with a levening of scottish specialities, like smoked salmon, haggis (try the whisky sauce), blackpudding, and imaginative dishes of the day. There is usually music playing, Scottish, and C&W predominate. Live music (and country dancing sometimes) frequent, mainly at weekends in the early season, more frequently in high season. Not to be missed if in Inverness.

jim.binnie - 12 Jun 2007 18:04
Has gone downhill recently after a change in management. Does not keep up to speed with the availabity of real ale's and it is very rare now to see all hand pumps actually supplying ale's. Food is excellent as is the weekend entertainment of live bands. Worth a visit all the same if your in the area.
ICTGringo - 1 Jan 2007 11:29
Well located in the city centre, the Blackfriars comes up trumps every time, supplying a good range of ales, including many from the smaller Scottish brewers. Live music is sometimes available. A comfortable venue for eating and drinking - highly recommended.

I visited Inverness Last year in October and had a great meal with my family in the afternoon. I went back to the pub on the eveneing and enjoyed a great night dancing away with a load of Australian Tourists. The 2 piece band were great and showed us how to do the various Scottish dances correctly. I am planning a return trip to Inverness in the Summer of 05 so I am loking forward to another great time there. If you ever visit Inverness then this Pub is a must see.
skyeboat - 18 Feb 2005 14:44
Returned to the pub after two years - still unchanged and still a great drinking place - loads of real ale - the best in Inverness. Food still great and entertainment in evenings a mixture, the weekly Ceilidh still going strong.

I visited this pub for the first time a few years ago and was gobsmacked! A great range of ales on handpull and an amazing array of continental (mainly Belgian) bottled beers! Heaven!!! Friendly service and great beer. It seemd to be a bit more of a student type pub on my last visit, but the beer was still good and the atmosphere great. The locals are friendly too. Someone bought me a drink within 5 minutes of being in there!! A belter!!!
