user reviews of the Greyhound, Chalfont St Peter

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This pub appears to have settled down to being a good pub/restaurant with a welcoming friendly atmosphere. The bar is generally quite busy but if you search around there is generally somewhere to sit. 2 real ales on both a decent drink, the food is good and sensibly priced. A major improvement on what it was a few years ago.

This pub has changed hands last year and has been totally revamped. There is now a different feel, it is much more food driven and with a new balance between food and drink. There is a new restaurant area with waiter service, though it is informal and still very much the central pub in the village. Usually 2 or 3 real ales and a good affordable wine list, good outside seating. It also has really nice beamed bedrooms. An old coaching inn worth a visit.

Despite my last review I did go back to The Greyhound, now two real ales, Speckled Hen and Pride, both in good condition but served too cold. We ate in the restaurant and had a good meal in a good atmosphere and had a good evening.
Randyray - 29 Nov 2009 17:32
It is some time since I had been in the Greyhound, so was interested to see if it had changed. The service was OK, the beer (only one real ale Speckled Hen) was OK and the pub was comfortable and welcoming. The food was over priced for what it was but the quality was OK.
So, I guess it was an OK pub, but that is not good enough to make me use it regularly.
Randyray - 17 Sep 2009 17:50
I agree with most people on here, bad place to drink even worse place to eat. Walked out on my last visit after waiting nearly half an hour to get served and it wasn't even that busy!! Not an enjoyable experience at all.
ahoythere - 23 Apr 2008 23:24
I am really upset and unhappy how people are letting this venue down. Firstly this is a great place and setting. OK there maybe a element of bad staff but we have them all.

So come on put your axes down and try again.

TO ALL YOU LOSERS WHO SEE FIT TO WRITE CRAP ABOUT EX EMPLOYEES AND THEIR PERSONAL BUSINESS. DO NONE OF YOU HAVE ANYTHING BETTER TO DO WITH YOUR SAD LITTLE LIVES THAN SLAG OFF HARD WORKING GENUINE PEOPLE.
IT MAKES ME SAD AND ANGRY TO THINK THAT THERE IS THIS LEVEL OF DISRESPECT AND IGNORANCE IN THIS DAY AND AGE.
THIS SITE IS FOR PEOPLE TO REVIEW PUBS, NOT TO USE AS A PERSONAL SLIGHT AGAINST PEOPLE.
MABY IF ANY OF YOU HAD HALF A HEART OR BRAIN CELL BETWEEN YOU YOU WOULD REALISE THE EXTENT OF YOUR VERBAL RAMBLINGS AND KEEP YOUR ATTACKS AGAINST INDIVIDUALS TO YOURSELVES.
IF YOU DONT LIKE THE PUB FAIR ENOUGH, DONT GO THERE, AND GROW UP AND STOP USING THESE TYPES OF SITES TO SLAG OFF AND ABUSE INDIVIDUALS YOU SAD SAD PEOPLE.
MIGHT I ADD AND I DONT MIND ADMITTING THAT I AM A PERSONAL FRIEND TO THE FAMILY AND THEY ARE ALL HARD WORKING, DOWN TO EARTH AND TRYING TO SUCCEED IN A DIFFICULT MARKET...PERHAPS YOU SHOULD ALL PUT YOUR HEADS DOWN AND LEAVE THEM ALONE.
I SHANT BE CHECKING THIS SITE FOR ANY 'FOLLOW UPS' FROM ANY OF YOU SO NO NEED TO REPLY
THANKYOU

Imposing building by roundabout. More of a chain restaurant than a pub, although I have to say I didnt eat there. Only real beer on was Deuchars, although the there was a pump clip for Courage Best turned around the other way. Most customers (Saturday lunchtime) seemed to be fresh out of school, and the whole feel of the place, having been tarted up 6 or 7 years ago is that it is becoming just a tad dog-eared.

Wouldnt rush back.

I agree crap food nasty food, service is one of the worst I have ever seen.

Come on Chalfont what's happened to the fun loving place this used to be, with great food, service with a smile, and a owner who cares.

anonymous - 6 Oct 2007 07:45
after years away from chalfont i went to the greyhound which was a great pub when run by john and the late paul on entering i was greeted by 5 bouncers nice geezers but whats that all about i never remember a fight in the place in all my time there before on entering i was shocked to find they had totally wrecked the character of the pub the decor is complete shite there are bloody cameras everywhere im sure they are watching while you are taking a piss the staff were the most miserable people you could assemble in one room all the local characters have left to be replaced by a bunch of boring city snobs the food was so overpriced i nearly fell off my chair the food was no better than macdonalds in fact a lot worse if thats possable the beer was flat and even when i spat in the glass i still failed to get a head the landlady needs a personality makeover........try smiling dear....the best thing i can say about this pub is its on a main road so you can make a quick getaway. on summing up if you want to ruin a pub get in contact with the present owners.......its now a bloody dump i wont ever be back ..bring back john i say
anonymous - 24 Sep 2007 07:43

Went here the other day, fantastic decor but what a waste
staff do look a sick and fed up, and the food I was told was great, no it was not and far from that we ended up in the kabab shop to eat.........but still it was a laugh

anonymous - 29 Jul 2007 18:36
The best gay venue in chalfont

anonymous - 22 Jun 2007 12:56
Not the worst pub in the world but definately not the best. Miserable place to drink, overpriced, staff are miserable and there is no atmosphere. I will definately be drinking in the other pubs in the village instead of here.
lapdkelly - 2 Jun 2007 14:06
sounds like this is the worst pub in the world from previous comments. I like it. Nice set up, good beers and a cool garden. Working hard with comedy, bands, pizza etc etc. Good for them. Give some constructive criticism. Staff do look a bit fed up...round of shooters every hour would sort them out. Plus I heard staff are not allowed to drink in the bar even off duty!! Nice industrial relations eh.
whitto - 1 Jun 2007 00:08
Best gay venue in the area
anonymous - 24 May 2007 08:57
can someone please tell what all the fuss is about at the greyhound Inn, food average, staff grumpy and way overpriced. When is the george open at least there will be a classy place to go around chalfont
anonymous - 18 May 2007 14:24
I went to the Geyhound last Thurday night, no wonder the pizzas are only 5, they were useless and the music was even worse. Table sevice was very slow. there was no atmosphere. this pub is way over rated I agree with the person who wrote the last comment, I wont be going back there in a hurry either
anonymous - 23 Apr 2007 12:59
Not a very nice pub, way over priced had dinner there last week, might aswell have went to Macdonalds. service behind the bar wasnt great wont be going back in a hurry
anonymous - 10 Apr 2007 14:17
Had a very indifferent pint of London Pride here earlier with Green King IPA being the only other choice. (Is that a choice?) Service was good and the food reasonable but there again the place was half empty. What I didn't like was the wood panelling everywhere and the widescreen TV's but horses for courses if it's good for you go for it - 4/10
Phantom_Raspberry - 23 Feb 2007 15:20
Well if some people will pay at any price thats not me as a local I would say the food is 3/10 and service is 5/5.......sorry
anonymous - 7 Jan 2007 16:27
This Pub is expensive, but this is deliberate. Its simply to keep the Chav element away, which is fair enough, as I would gladly pay up to 5 a Pint to be able to have one without idiots kicking off when they have a Stella too many. Its a pleasant enough place, so can't agree on some of the other reviews that have been added. It sounds like Sour Grapes to me!
Alain - 30 Dec 2006 18:07
First of all I have to disagree with these silly peoples comments, the food is Fantasic. maybe if u didnt get to drunk then u would actually taste it!! The staff are very helpful and always ready and willing to do anything for the costumer, so keep up the good work Greyhound team
sexy_babe - 27 Dec 2006 23:27
A pub that has lost its way, the management do not know whether they want it to be a restaurant, a hotel or a local pub, the reality is, it is not successful as any of them. Beer is OK, food is variable, atmosphere is variable, service is variable.
Randyray - 16 Nov 2006 21:57
let ne think, wud i rather pay more n go here or less n go sumwhere like the poachers? no brainer really, g hound wins everytime

bigray - 21 Oct 2006 12:53
The greyhound inn is a fantasic pub, great food, great drink, great staff what more could u want!!I met the love of my life there its the best and Nick the manager is great
sexy_babe - 7 Oct 2006 13:44
I have to disagree with all of these poor reviews about The Greyhound Inn.
It's a wonderful pub with great service, well trained staff, great food and a great atmosphere. I drink and dine in here regulary with both friends and family.

The Greyhound has some good evenining entertainment which you can't get in the rest of chalfont or gerrards cross. I've been to poker, comedy and quiz night!

Yes it may be expensive but you pay for the quality of the service in my opinion.
anonymous - 4 Oct 2006 17:50
We went for a meal, very very nice at the right price too. we had table service throughout and the waitress was very polite and rather funny. Atmosphere was very nice indeed and the place looks expensive. Its a normal pub/restaurant surrounded in luxury. Sadly won't be going back as we live a long way away but will reccomend.
anonymous - 9 Sep 2006 12:56
Expensive, poor range of beer and steadily going down market.
Randyray - 6 Sep 2006 21:14
Probably the best place to go in the area, taken over from the packhorse in GX as the pub 2 be in on a fri or sat nite. i'd gladly pay their prices then have to stand in the poachers or any other pub in the village.
bigray - 29 Jul 2006 17:20
It's just not my sort of pub. Nice interior but drinks are pricey enough for you to expect a decent level of service and well trained, well mannered staff - and I'm afraid you may well be disappointed.
Davidd - 9 Jun 2006 16:10
Well I agree with it being Pretentious and well over-priced but very luxurious interior, however I was not impressed with the staff or the food. With one person calling herself the assistant manger smoking behind the reception desk and another looking very pale I wondered who was going to deal with my complaint.

Me and my wife got informed the Beer was wonderfull and guest beers on tap, that the food was the best in the area but no, let down completely shame the place holds a lot of potential i think may be better management would help.
earthboy - 19 May 2006 19:19
Pretentious and over-priced although it has a very luxurious interior. The river has sadly dried up so don't go t there expecting a river side pub.
kerrcarter - 2 May 2006 11:32
Very nice pub, now open till 1am at weekends, great to go in and see all the friendly faces. People seem very chatty in there too
Winner - 12 Mar 2006 20:42
It's a decent enough pub, get's a bit too packed on Friday and Saturday but apart from that it's nearly as far away from being a Weatherspoons as possible, as it's pricey and there's music and televisions all over the place.

On the plus side it's not the Poachers and if you're really lucky they sometimes have table service for the drinks which is handy as it's nearly impossible to get out of their leather seats.

anonymous - 17 Feb 2006 17:10
Brilliant pub, I was in there last week and the atmosphere is excellent. They have a good crowd of customers and the place seems to always heaving. I'm liking what they did to the interior, I disagree with Beezer. 'A weatherspoons'??? Get real. It's the only place to go in the area of chalfonts.
siobhan - 9 Dec 2005 14:44
Beezer is spot on. Just moved back to the area after a year away and they've altered it beyond recognition. Quiz nights, live music etc. Its like a ruddy Weatherspoons. Male management is worse than useless so thank god for the lady or I'd never get served.
builderboy - 9 Dec 2005 13:38
Possibly the most pretentious pub in Buckinghamshire. Food is overpriced and overrated. Used to be a very atmospheric pub but now ruined.
beezer - 17 Nov 2005 09:04
A recently refurbished 15th century coaching inn it can get very busy and quite cramped. Drinks amongst the priciest in Chalfont. Beer garden next to the river is nice in the summer. Lovely food in the restaurant.
