Medieval pub that has been updated inside. But it still maintains plenty of character. Having been to Drapers and the Earl of Mercia and then moving on to the Slug & Lettuce (an old courthouse, but no real ale and not listed on here) and the Flying Standard, this was the only pub in this part of Coventry city centre that actually had the atmosphere of a decent boozer. A few people seemed to be in for a pre-Christmas meet-up. Ales were Caledonian Golden Cross, Byatt's XXXmas, Wychwood Bah Humbug & Ossett Yorkshire Blonde. To my surprise, there were also a couple of Weston's ciders - Old Rosie & Flat Tyre. CAMRA discounts are offered. But for some reason, they were only offered on the Old Rosie and not the Flat Tyre - seemed a little odd. Not a bad little pub though.

Good Beer Guide Tick #2 in Coventry.

Architecturally stunning medieval building next to the cathedral... somehow surviving the blitz.

Inside its had a posh makeover - making it near gastro.

Four to five real ale pumps on. The Adnams Ghost Ship was in slightly better than average condition.

Nothing to make this stand out.

No customers at 2pm on a tuesday afternoon, possibly due to the soulless interior. Did stay as quiz machine was obviously available, there was Broadside on and it was ok no more.

Lovely exterior just shame about the aleless interior, 5/10

Nice old building, but not a very good pub. Has potential though; if they could just evict those pesky chimps.....

I'm sure 'Bolshevikboozer' can find plenty of other places in Coventry where he can avoid the 'societal goth student chimp retards'. Meanwhile, its one of the few places in Cov catering to the non Townie brigade. Sure, it ain't without his faults but I enjoy it.

Sue me.

In any other city this building would be protected and well looked after, not in Cov.

Fancy handing this place over to a bunch of goth student chimps. These animals can't even look after their own personal hygiene, let alone keep a pub clean and tidy. This place is over-priced and has very little to offer, if you don't look like a dirty freak then you'll get no respect from these chumps. Black is the colour to wear and staple bits of metal onto your face, mug a tramp for his clothes and you'll fit right in with these societal rejects.

This pub is one of Coventry's few surviving tudor buildings, housed in a lovely old timbered cottage. Inside, however, is a diferent story. Lacks character. The Lonely Planet describes it as "chummy". Maybe.

one of the best venues in Cov and its free entry so you get a good crowd as a rule and no trouble.

Never had a problem with door staff there and it has just won an award for the best live music venue in the country throughout the Scottish and Newcastle brewery chain. and has been featured as part of Channel 4's Rock School yes Gene popped in so to speak.

Beer as in most town pubs I never drink anything from the tap and only have bottled stuff.

The best late night pub in Cov. Also has live music on Saturdays and Thursdays, brilliant.

I did look kind of menacing in that hat tho (all 5'6" of me)!
gillyweed - 20 Aug 2005 15:31
Alright pub, but as is a feature of pubs in the area, suspect door staff. My girlfriend was refused entry on account of wearing a hat. This in the middle of december, and most people remove outer garments when entering a building.

Bizarre.

But when we have been allowed in, hatless of course, the beers pretty good, but not as good as at Whitefriars.

Very cool place on a friday night. Not too sure about other nights. But their cocktails are relatively nice. The DJ's pretty cool to, if you see him ask him to play ocean colour scene!

great night out on a friday if you love your rock n roll - possibly the best of any night in coventry lot's of great music such as the who, ocean colour scene, oasis, stone roses etc as well as rubbish like the killers. good atmosphere but very young people as well as a few middle agers. beers not great, but snakebite n black for 2.40

quiet during the day. gets gothic on other nights than friday.

From the outside this is a lovely old building, unfortunatly the inside has been made student freindly. Not a vast range on selection on the bar, but the music and atmos is good most nights.
The upstairs is open too and has various music nights, though the 'dance area' is the size of a postage stamp!

I was born in the Golden Cross in 1942. This pub, when my parents ran it was one of the social centres of Coventry. The Law courts were next door and Police H.Q just up the road, (Pepper Lane if I remember correctly). It used to be furnished with beautiful black oak chairs and benches and the bar had black oak paneling. At the side of the pub was the coaching entrance to the yard and stables. We left there in 1949. I didn't see it again for probably 20 years. I couldn't believe how it had been trashed. The archway had been removed and some god awful concrete structure used as a resturant put in its place. All the bar had been stripped and it was painted PURPLE and YELLOW. I remember my dad telling me that it used to get so busy that people didn't have enough room to lift up their drinks. I was only small at the time but I can clearly remember people waiting outside for an opportunity to get in and get a drink. My dad started catering their, serving rolls and salads etc, when it was unheard of in pubs in the U.K, and the brewery ( The Northampton Brewery Company) didn't expect a cut, so we made a nice little profit out of it.I know that this will probably bore most of your contributors to death, but there you go. Incidentally the pub is 15th Century, not 16th/17th. When the Cathedral and St Johns Church, opposite, were bombed the only damage to the Golden Cross was that the Club room window was blown out. I remember one local saying "now we know where God prefered to be, in the Golden Cross". Incidentally, when I eventually went back to The Cross, the beer was C..P, but judging by some of the comments above, it's not so bad now.

Nice pub right in the centre of the city, close to the cathedral. Sixteenth or seventeenth century timber framed building. Good atmosphere, especially at night as it's popular with students and close to Yate's.

Great pub, caters for everyone who chooses to walk in the door. Far more of a chilled atmosphere that a lot of the surrounding pubs. Does offers throughout the day. Being refurbished and soon to offer food. Friday night is Indie night and an extremely popular night with all. Saturday night is more chart and dance orientated but mostly anything goes. Free to get upstairs into the nightclub. Give it a go. I'm sure you'll like it!

This pub is right in the old part of Coventry, the building is an original old building on the old cobbled street right outside the pub. This pub is popular with students, rockers and alternative types and the music reflects this. There is not a great range of beer. Upstairs there is a small room which I believe has a late licence.

Right in the City Centre, great for those post work drinks on a friday night, beer range not wonderful, but good atmosphere and juke box.
