user reviews of the Queens, Primrose Hill

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Advertised all World Cup games then turned off the TV just as a penalty shoutout was happening! Everyone was well behaved, all drinks finished and just wanted to watch the end of the game after which they would have left. The manager was young and obviously had no experience. Shame as otherwise it was ok. Luckily the Pembroke Castle up the road let everyone in to watch the end of the game even though they were shut. If you're thinking of going to the queens go the Pembroke castle instead it's just up the road as is a far better pub.

No Sky TV but they have BT Sport. Never had a problem with stafff and the prices are cheaper than other pubs in the area.

Having been in there off and on for the last 10 months I feel I’m now able to put forward a subjective and honest review not based on the bias of one or two bad experiences.

In my opinion the place is pretty much a social club for the bar staff and their mates and they’ll do absolutely anything in their power to avoid serving you and actually do what they’re paid to do. On countless occasions now there have been multiple staff behind the bar who simply ignore you so they can continue chatting to their mates. On a couple of occasions they’ve come through the door behind the bar, made eye contact then totally ignored me to go off to chinwag to their colleagues (I must also add that I was the only person at the bar and there was absolutely no doubt we’d made eye contact and that the individual just couldn’t be bothered, lowered his gaze and walked off to his pals –the other 3 staff chatting who chose to ignore me too) It seems that all customers are inconveniencing the staff by making them work and that serving punters is clearly beneath them. (For a lesson in how to serve and chat to punters they should walk down the road to The Pembroke or The Albert)

Throw in the two geezers wedged in the same toilet cubicle repeatedly sniffing loudly (A sheltered lad like me could have no idea what they could possibly have been doing in there) and the nasty 80s cheese that was playing on my latest visit I think it’s fair to say I won’t ever be going back. The 6 others drinkers in the area are far far superior.

Avoid at all costs as customer service are words the staff simply don’t understand and when they do finally have the time in their busy personal schedule to serve you they, in my experience, are surely and very blunt with no expression or friendliness. The only reason I think this place survives is it’s close proximity to the Hill.

A pub that wouldn't be out of place near Leicester Square - overpriced, crap food, crap service and crap atmosphere. Crap.
northlondon88 - 19 Feb 2012 12:47
Any pub in which you might enter and finds oneself immediately beset by an employee saying and asking "Have you reserved a table?" or "Would you like to go to our restaurant area upstairs?", is no longer a pub but has become a restaurant.

This change of use for this establishment should be registered.
mycetes - 31 Dec 2011 13:37
As previously said a little cramped.
Beers (youngs) was top notch.
Assumed as locals we friendly with general smiles etc on entering.
Overall quite a pleasant pub and worth visiting if in the area.
pick_e_tippler - 31 Dec 2011 10:41
not to shabby. nice clean well maintained exterior, bit to cramped inside for my liking but with a large se;ection of casks

I quite like this pub, especially after a nice walk on The Hill with its stunning views.

A pal and myself got sat outside yesterday afternoon. The Young's Gold wasn't ready for pouring but the girl behind the bar pulled it through and apologised for the wait, which was good. The beer was excellent.
willesden_seadog - 14 Jun 2011 22:56
A truly awful place to go for a Sunday roast. The beef was like chewing on an old shoe, the only thing that takes you attention away from the cr*p roast is the wretched service.
The miserable girl behind the bar shouted at us that if we wanted food we had to go to the bar get a piece of paper and take our order ourselves. This seemed a touch odd as we were a group of nine in an otherwise empty pub. Oh, I nearly forgot how moody the staff were when we asked to split the bill three ways, taking it apon themselves to try and over charge us 100. The only thing this pub has going for it is location.

BGR - 4 Apr 2011 16:25
This place has the worst roast in London. Cold, fatty and uses frozen vegetables.
Avoid eating here!
gmeow - 1 Mar 2011 11:55
Refurbished, reopened and rammed on Sunday afternoon. Young's ord (3.15), Special, Bomba, Directors and Doom Bar on the pumps.
oak_cliff - 8 Nov 2010 22:39
Does the job for us: we do Primrose Hill for the jazz sess at the Princess of Wales and very happy to pop in here for footy b4 or after. Modernised Young's pub with food slant (like most pubs in this manor, and why not?) but caters for all comers. Decent ale (bitter/special) and wine. Will be back after the refurb.
oak_cliff - 24 Oct 2010 20:00
Geronimo are no longer running this establishment. It is back with Youngs. Review to follow.
swansheath - 23 Jul 2010 08:23
I got it! You had me going there for a bit, optc2010... then I noticed the date! Apr 1st. It's a spoof innit? Cor, you're a laugh eh?
foghorn - 23 May 2010 21:25
This place is so cheap! They gave me a watered down bitter and when I asked them to replace they said they would have to charge me! I asked them to reconsider as I like writing reviews and they still said no. This place should be avoided!!!
optc2010 - 1 Apr 2010 13:58
Great spot for a warming drink after taking the dog for a walk on the hill.
janeroo - 3 Mar 2010 12:18
Nice enough pub that sits well in the surroundings of a very affluent area; sadly, however, the prices reflect this. No matter how good a pint of Young's ordinary is, it probably isn't good enough to justify a near-4/pint pricetag. A shame, as this is otherwise a pleasant location to kill a couple of hours and the food is allegedly quite good.
pablos13 - 19 Nov 2009 21:03
Given that Arsenal is a local team and Liverpool isn't, this seems right. Not that I support either of them.
jagsfan - 5 Nov 2009 12:33
I called the pub yesterday to ask if they were showing the Liverpool v Lyon match, which they said they were. Got there are confirmed they were showing the match again with the bar staff, so decided to stay even though they only have one small screen.

Sat down with a few pints of Titanic Iceberg and some food (which was good). Then discovered, after having spent over 30 in their pub that the owners had decided they were going to watch the Arsenal match instead, just because some regulars had turned up who wanted to watch it. So I had to bolt down my food and ended up missing the whole of the first half of the game. Yeah, thanks a million guys.

It's been a while since I passed comment on The Queens.... 12mths in fact. One of the comments I made in my last review was regarding management and the lack of continuity. Has that improved? Not a bit! If anything it is distinctly worse. At the last head count, amongst regulars, there have been five different manager/landlords in a two year period. As I am sure the reader can imagine, the regular bar staff themselves tend to "show the ropes" to the new bosses. All well and good if the appointees were in for the long haul, whereby they can make their mark. That is most certainly "not" the case. This pub, quite literally, redesigns the wheel every few months as the managers are moved on to other establishments within the Geronimo group.
The fact of the matter is that this pub is essentially run as a social meeting point for the bar staff...... and it shows, boy does it show.
swansheath - 17 Oct 2009 17:58
Just for info the beer selection is different to other Geronimo pubs as this one is tied to Youngs, the others are mainly free of tie. Hope this helps
ed_Turner - 18 Sep 2009 20:40
Can't quite work out why its so popular here? Weekdays are generally OK, but the beer standard isn't up to others in the chain (its Geronimo Inns, not Youngs, BTW) and due to the shape of the place and the type of clintele, weekends are best avoided becomes. A better bet is the Queens No1 up the road.
Planner_21 - 9 Sep 2009 13:38
One of my favourite pubs. Went in on Friday afternoon. The Youngs was in good fettle and i ate with two friends. The food was excellent if a little on the pricey side.

I will certainly return.
willesden_seadog - 18 May 2009 12:20
It was a bit crammed in here during my visit and it took a while to be served, but the staff were polite enough when it was finally my turn. The pub looks big from the outside, but the actual bar area is quite thin. Maybe I missed another room behind the bar?
A few of the locals were watching the football on a small plasma screen at one end of the pub and at the other end there is a raised area that seemed to be the prime location to sit.

I had a very nice pint of Deuchars and Ordinary and Special were also available alongside a selection of standard and premium lagers.

I thought it was OK in here, but I didnt find it to be the best pub in the Primrose Hill area.
Strongers - 16 Apr 2009 07:22
Such great potential , such a bad offer... but if only to be accused of listening in to other peoples conversations. A couple were in here on friday evening and he was sizing up everything, taking notes on things and his female partner said that she hopes he gets the pub , she really likes it.
So maybe a new manager is on his / her way ? anyway , only had a quick pint then my dinner companions arrived and we left for elsewhere for dinner. Ive always liked here and do agree that its been a bit hit and miss.
The_Pub_Inspector - 29 Nov 2008 20:05
Excellent pub. During the week it is a firm favourite with the natives. Weekends tend to get very busy with the influx of folk using the hill. This tends to push things to their limits owing to the limited space. Sadly the clientele at weekends tend to lean toward the more rowdy which can render the place a little too claustrophobic.
The staff turnover seems to be rapid, often leading to tailbacks at the bar as new staff get up to speed. The management turnover is, if anything, more frequent than that of general bar staff. In four years I have witnessed six managers which can do nothing for maintaining continuity of standards.
Geronimo need to sort the management issues in this establishment and install someone who can take the helm on a more long term basis rather than juggling personnel in an apparent ad-hoc fashion.
I still maintain that this is an excellent pub, however this has relied upon a core group of general bar staff who are attentive and friendly. It is crucial that Geronimo keep a grip on The Queens because there is stiff local opposition and to lose custom because of imprudent management decisions would be sad as this pubs atmosphere relies heavily upon the local community (most certainly during the week).
swansheath - 25 Oct 2008 13:41
The new female manager appears dissinterested in customer relations. This is a shame as the other bar staff are polite and helpfull. The toilets are in general dirty and not looked after, I would advise you to bring wet wipes to wash your hands if eating in this pub!

londonjack - 22 Oct 2008 19:51
Comforable enough. Not too trendy. Looks like a Youngs house a first glance, the landlord assures me it isn't, but I didn't notice anything other than Young's beer portfolio. Engels lived opposite, and his mate Marx was a bit of a piss-head so every chance the pair of them used to turn it on in there now and again. What they would have made of 3.75 for a (ver drinkable) Light and Bitter I can't imagine. Could have started a bloody revolution!
foghorn - 18 Sep 2008 13:37
Its not that the Queen's doesnt have potential. Its that it does, but the landlord thinks that it is already the best pub in the world and therefore it has a pretentious atmosphere, rude staff (particularly the woman manager) and expensive drinks. I like the place, I dont like the way it is run.
loveapintinsummer - 27 Jul 2006 16:47
Not sure if they just renovated, but I didn't find this pub scruffy at all - quite the opposite. It was very nice indeed (although perhaps my definition of scruffy differs from that of the average Primrose Hill resident!) Also found staff helpful and good selection...
Maybe they were just having a good day?
fyrg - 5 Apr 2006 12:18
I love this place. I used to live in London and my friends and I loved to meet up here for an all day drink. Love those comfy seats by the window! Always great people in. Food upstairs is lovely! Remember to get that cheese plate for dessert.
I return here everytime I come back to London for a visit.
Merlot - 31 Mar 2006 19:02
Staff attentive. Atmosphere jovial. Nice location. Main bar smokey and with little ventilation. The Youngs Bitter was badly kept.
darloexile - 6 Feb 2006 13:53
I agree. Rude and slow staff and the food used to be so much better. The place looks too scruffy for the area. Great location, but that's it
anonymous - 5 Feb 2006 16:43
Im not a great fan either. I found the male bar staff rude. Always feels a bit too hot and stuffy. Food used to be better than it is now-did they cange the chef?Feel more relaxed in the Queens no 1.Shame
simonbard - 31 Dec 2005 17:26
Didn't like this place. It has a great location, and I normally love Young's - but this place lacks atmosphere and the staff are rubbish. Add to this the fact that they only do Young's ordinary and special (no seasonals and no bottles other than the rubbish ram rod) and I give this a big thumbs down.
anonymous - 30 Dec 2005 13:25
lovely, great staff, friendly punters and cosy... I have to say the friendliset pub in Primrose hill.
Kjoy - 22 Dec 2005 17:04
The best pub in Primrose Hill, but that's not saying much really. It had Smiles ale on tap when I was there. And that by itself will have me making a repeat visit if I ever happen to accidentally wander into the area again.
travis - 31 Aug 2004 15:46
fantastic sunday lunch. the beef is big and bloody and the bloody mary mmmmmmmm. really good value for the area also with a goiod sunday lunch with 3 courses and a pint or 2 coming in at undre 25/head if dont go crazy. then stagger up hill for view and panting.
anonymous - 24 Feb 2004 16:11
Thursday nights they have a DJ who plays funky laid back jazzy tunes... nice food too and friendly staff - definite place to chill for a while.
David - 11 Dec 2003 11:43
Nice pub for a Friday afternoon when you should be at work. Proper beer, slightly poncey food, but a nice location on the edge of the park.
Pauly - 20 Sep 2003 11:58
For PH this isn't too bad. Can get very busy as it's narrow. As ever, though, my lager was warm.
anonymous - 31 Aug 2003 11:29
Considering how close this pub is to the epicentre of cool, it is remarkable that it as managed to retain a strong local following. The Fullers is a tad watery, but other than that....cracking!!!!
Pintoften - 11 Aug 2003 17:59
Two words: Good pub!
G - 16 Jun 2003 16:30
Fantastic location right next to Primrose Hill, great for a cooling pint after a strenuous day of doing nothing. The decor is nothing to write home about. Food is above average - there is a restaurant area upstairs if you want a bit more space.
Marc - 30 May 2003 16:48
Very cosy, dark wood bar, with open fire. Very friendly staff. Lots of dogs with owners on sunday afternoons. Good bar-food and Sports TV in one corner. Perfect.
