user reviews of the Square Albert, Manchester

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Used to have a cellar open that was a pretty decent place for a drink. They even had little plays down there. It's probably rented out as "lofts" now to an unMancunian who thinks he got a "wicked" deal on the place compared to what he'd pay in Surrey.

Er, sorry to say, it's now closed with no sign of reopening. Shame cos it was always worth a visit if you were in a big group, most of that end of Manchester is now trendy bars.

Must agree with smudger below.

We get there every year on our jollyboys outing and are always welcomed. Which is a surprise as we're all pi$$ed by the time we get there. Great pub and staff.

Excellent public house, and at prices that make it expensive to abstain.

The barstaff are excellent, polite and the beers good. Also devoid of any type of fashionable person, which in my opinion is a bonus.

Take a bunch of friends, annexe one of the booths at 3 o clock on a saturday, and just have a laugh. A short walk to virtually any other city centre nightspot.

This pub is worth checking out. The interior is original, and very well kept (all glass intact, and foist only present on stairs to the toilets!). It's really rather large too, which you notice if it's quiet. There are also wide steps up to the raised seating areas, and some nice brass railings. I get the feeling there may be an equally large basement, but this was not accessible when I paid a visit, and may not even be open to the public any more.

As you enter, there is front window seating to your left, and two levels of raised seating to your right. All of the seating has windows nearby, giving you a view of Albert Square, or the roads leading up to it. The bar itself is further in on the left, where we were met by very friendly and helpful staff. Two different real ales are available, and the Abbot Ale is well kept and worth a try. Prices were also rather good, especially if you fancy a shot of something. Personally, I'd rather be in here than in the nasty Slug and Lettuce next door any day.
