please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This place really needs to pull it's socks up if my recent visit was typical of how the place is run. On arrival our group was informed that the majority of lager taps were out of use, supposedly due to "frozen pipes" and that coke was also unavailable, leaving little choice of drink. Things didn't get much better when using the overpriced pool tables, which needed attention on three or four occasions after the cue ball kept getting stuck inside them, not to mention the fact that none seem to be level.

Nice quiet pub, but very very expensive!

Blackthorn/Fosters about 3.50 and pool is 1.50 a game.

Came here to watch the World Cup game Portugal v Brazil a couple of Friday afternoons back, during a day out in Brighton. The bar was pretty empty but perhaps understandably so due to the hot sunny weather, meaning people had better things to do with their time (and a wise choice given how the game turned out!)

Plenty of screens to enjoy the action and also a choice of different types of seating. I sat on a stool at the table in front of the big projection screen, but positioned myself so there was also a good view of the screen behind the right hand side of the bar.

Sound and vision quality were very good.

Beer was fine and nicely chilled, the taste elevated to nectar status after 3 hours walking round in the hot sunshine!

Obviously this was an afternoon visit therefore unable to verify any of the other reviews of evenings spent there, and would have been interesting to see how this place rated with a lot more punters in (e.g. an England game), but in terms of serving the purpose of my going in there i.e. watching the game with a couple of cold beers on a weekday afternoon, this was spot on.

Reasonable place to watch sport on big screens - comfortable seats and friendly bar staff. Food OK.

Went to The Smugglers to watch the Champions League Final since it's refurb as a sports bar. Difficult to get a drink due to management letting someone reserve the far end of the bar.

Loads of screens, food looked good, poor beer selection when you could get one. Give a miss on big sports events not worth it.

Once good, now gone tremendously downhill :-(

I was in here for a couple of drinks on Saturday afternoon. Nice chilled atmosphere. I would imagine its not the type of place I would normally frequent in the evening. However, the seats in the window are fab, having a beer watching everyone go past.

I liked this pub and would go back.

With a note about the previous comments, whats the problem with a stag party drinking in a pub. Lighten up!!!

The clientele of this place last time I went looked like they'd stepped straight out of a program called Binge Drink Britain.

I have to be with Tetsugaku here, used to be one of my favourite haunts (yes, it was dark, dont remember those goths though?), now it's been winebarised. It's just not a pub.

Skockingly bad - all of the nice old seats and great creative stuff hanging off the ceiling, so have the (and I'm serious here, I miss them) great stuffed squirells :( Over priced burgers (8 squids? come on!).

Disgusting modern soulless place, not fit for anyone but the Event Creation townie nightclub clientelle that this place now serves as a pre dance watering hole for.

Only thing they kept and is good is the cladding of the lower pool section in the 80 year old babysham box sides :) Oh the pool tables are better now but they cost 1.20 for a game on small tables with fat american pool balls.

Over all loosing this place was a crime

Oh my god what an improvment. From the dark goth era the pub has finally been brought in to afunky trendy bar. Although ther is many around Brighton this is something different. Excellent burger choice and tast. Walked in on Saturday to see the place rammed. This was after I queued outside for 10 mins. They have finally got a Dj playing in ther now and I should say he was playing some very nice funky house stuff. Obviously he had to put in a few comercial stuff but all round good music. I definately say go to this place at the weekends. Oh an added bonus was that theres was loads of fit chicks in there. Loved it!

Burgers are pretty tasty and the beer is good and cold. I will definatley be back fridy and saturday nights. So much more than the one drink stop it used to be.

This pub is always worth a visit when in Brighton, if only to wonder when all the stuff hanging from the ceiling is going to fall down and knock someone sparko! Interesting decor, especially from ceiling :) Dark, even in the daytime, and you can usually find a comfy seat. Nothing much going for it except the pool tables, if you're looking for entertainment this is the wrong pub. But is a quiet refuge from the Big Issue sellers and general melee that Brighton can be, especially in tourist season. Does a nice pint of cider. This is a pub which I will always return to, and I hope no one bastardises it and turns it all trendy.

Popped in last night (Saturday): friendly, quick service, door staff polite, reasonably priced given its location. All in all, not a bad experience

Usual vertical drinking emporium for the usual Brighton weekend clientele. No real ale.

I'm not too sure what people are seeing in this place, except for the fact that you can always get hold of a free pool table, (as there are 6), this pub has nothing else to offer. It's dingy decor and usual selection of average beers and spirits make your usual Yates/Wetherspoon dive. The only difference being that they don't have a magor company capital behind them to keep it in good order or to supply much needed drink offers. ps the pool tables need re-felting

dont blame the the pub becaouse of the stag party. what they going to do fence off the area for non stag parties. you cant go to any pub in brighton on a fri /sat night without meeting a stag party!!!! so everyone should close the doors to business!! Get a grip david!!!! Smugglers is a great little place hidden away in brighton.

Good bar billiards table. Decor charming, in a kitsch kind of way, I suppose. Otherwise its a bit of a dive - especially when the pool room/level is full of the ubiquitous Brighton stag party.

hove fab is this place. so unique. old style fun pub. loads of funny quotes on the walls to keep you amused, pool tables, good beer and great staff. glad i stumbled upon this little gem of a place. so different from all the clinical pubs you find these days. Staff great and really friendly. it really made my trip to the seaside sunnier
