user reviews of the Victoria, Camden

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I cannot believe that this pub is now shut and planning permission has been put in for flats. This was a lovely pub - wood panelled with a airy upstairs room and a sweet little beer garden. Was rammed on Thursdays and Fridays. Clearly there have been some problems with beer quality over the years, and for a free house the choice of beers was perhaps unimaginative, but pizzas were great (and popular). As
someone who is currently looking for a pub to operate, I would have been delighted to have taken this one on. Hoping that change of use permission will be denied by Camden Council and the Victoria will rise again, because the current state of affairs is pretty heartbreaking.

An absolute tradegy that this place closed!
AlistairVonLion - 21 Aug 2013 14:53
Closed as at June 23rd 2013 and photographed boarded up July 2nd 2013. It was a good little boozer and I enjoyed a couple of pints there only a few weeks before then.

Nice boozer. Very welcoming and friendly and a great spot to sit outside(front or back) in the summer. Very well presented and looked after(with realy attractive hanging baskets) Dukebox is excellent too. Gets very busy on a Friday due to the Crescent cigarette factory office staff but go any other time and it's a proper back street friendly locals NW1 pub.

Wish I'd read below before I ordered a pint of Bombardier which proved to be undrinkable. Worst pint I've been served in London. Shame, as it's quite a nice place otherwise.

same as below, really nice pub but stay away from All ales if on, and draught products.
Bottle only bar! food ok, not good though for the price....

Warm weather, nice garden, but very bad condition of ale and lagers.

Really nice little pub, really busy after work but dead at other times, great Pizza and very reasonably priced

Lovely garden. Scarily expensive though, go to the Sovereign unless you're out to impress or it's a special occasion.

They served 12 pizzas, 8 cokes a couple of bottles of water and only 2 pints when i was in here recently. Tells you all you need to know. Nice location and decor but was really more of a pizzaria than a pub. Wasn't even open at midday in the week ?

One of Camden's Best Kept secrets. Friendly family run pub, excellent pizzas, get's full of office workers on a Friday night but otherwise usually quiet.
CamdenGooner - 11 Feb 2009 14:44
This place was heaving with people inside and out on Friday night. The management are obviously doing something right as this pub is tucked away in the backstreets so wouldnt get that much passing trade.

My Pride was good and even though it was busy I was served in a reasonable amount of time by a nice enough member of staff.

If in the Camden area this pub is well worth the extra two minute walk away from the high street.

benefits from being of the main drag, lighting does take a bit of getting used to but all in all a great find.

I was impressed. Relaxing and welcoming backstreet pub - I felt at home immediately. Two ales on tap (IPA and Pride); my IPA was well-served. Fairly good quality jukebox which is always a find in a London pub. Beer garden as well. I thought the lighting was perhaps a little too low, but other than that a good place.

Met a friend here after work on Friday - really impressed. Good atmosphere, nice patio out back, busy but not overcrowded.

This Pub is quality, nice beer garden, nice beer and good pizzas. People that attend this pub are also extremly friendly too. The best thing about this pub is they run poker games once week. Mainly on Tuesdays. Now thats really cool.

A very good pub worth the (tiny) detour off the beaten track. Excellent beer, friendly service (apart from one female bartender who seems to be out of it all the time, often forgetting that she is serving you half way through serving you) and a terrific beer garden.

Popped in for a quick pint whilst on my way to a function at London Zoo.
Although it was early (5.00PM) on a Wednesday evening, there was still a few in. The Pride was good and the comfy settees were difficult to force myself out of when I had to leave. Took a little while to get used to the subdued lighting, but appart from that a great little pub away from the madding crowd. I can understand why it has scored healthily from other reviewers.

great pub, great staff.

I lived in Camden for 2 years, just round the corner from this pub. It (and the Crown and Goose) is the only thing I miss about Camden, an area without a great deal to recommend it. The Victoria is warm, comfortable, and has a cracking little garden for the summer. The dog is indeed a furry barrel of fun.

Ah what a great bar. Wonderful jukebox, wonderful staff, wonderful atmosphere.

Thank goodness it's more than two yards away from a tube station or you'd never get a seat.

lookmother - 7 Nov 2006 12:25
Nice place with a mix of experiences, depending what day and time you go.

Lots of office workers during the week, sometimes the
trannie set may appear (in all sorts of attire) quiet at times. In all cases its a welcoming environment, nice outdoors spaces.
TipTopTommy - 23 Oct 2006 18:28
Hired out the garden for an informal work do and it was great. Superb BBQ and drink for a great price and the pub dog was a star as he/she roamed around for a discarded rib or sausage. It's a good place to hit after hanging out at Regent's Park. Nicer and smaller than the bigger Edinbourgh Castle up the road. Don't know what the prices would be if not buying in bulk, but I wish this pub was my local.

The comments of djburns on 18/2/06 still apply. The pub is comfortable (padded benches and sofas) and seems a long way from the bustle round Camden Town tube. Unfortunately there was still only one cask ale and, as before, it had run out. Some of the customers prefer bottled beers (budweiser, leffe)
clissold345 - 24 Apr 2006 22:38
I visited this pub last week for a bite to eat after reading the favourable comments on this site but unfortunately they only serve food at lunchtimes. The 1 cask ale (London Pride) had run out (as it had 6 months ago when I last came) but I cannot fault the place for it's ambience, cosiness and charm. The interior is really worth checking out - plenty of dark wood, copper-topped tables and subtle lighting and the staff are friendly. If they sort out the ale supply I'll be a regular visitor.

The best tuna melt i ever had. Ever.

Nice for a work lunch, good sunny area out the back. Food a bit on the pricey side.

As an avid animal lover,I was delighted with this pub.Not only was the service superb, the beer was as well,A really good pint, and the staff fabulous.I even saw a dog in the pub which I thought was fantastic,as some bars do not let dogs in.I live in Kent And was up in London for the day with my husband, and we normally would bring our little pug dog toby,Had I known he could have gone unoticed I would have brought him as well!It would put some pubs in Kent to shame.

The best pub in London? That's hilarious.

It's an ok pub. I'm curious as to when it's popular as I was last there on a Sunday afternoon when most backstreet pubs like this are jammed to the rafters with people feeding their fat little faces. Even the nearby Mornington Arms had twice the amount of people in it.

There was a pub dog in there, the name of which escapes me now. He was the best pub entertainment I've enjoyed in a long time.

This is probably the best pub in London. Yes, the drinks are 20p too expensive but the staff are extremely freindly and the decor is Camden cool and stunning. The garden out back is simply beautiful. The clientelle are a mix of local 30 something trendies/celebs (Kate Moss, Gallager brothers etc.) and office workers from the Black Cat offices on the crescent - all in all an wonderfully laid back, grown-up atmosphere. What more could you want? Pay the sodding extra 20p and have the time of your life.

I used to live opposite this pub and I loved it. The bar staff were always friendly, the decor is really cool and they always play good music. Quite a 30 somethings art crowd and I have seen Rhys Ifans and Sean Bean in there. However it is quite steep.

this pub rocks...very chill, nice staff and now they've got london pride i'm a happy man
beggster - 29 Mar 2004 13:39
This is an OK pub, but is basically a back street boozer with the pretensions and prices of a central London pub, 2.70 for a pint of Carlsburg, which strangely was also the price of Guinness and Stella. 4.30 for a large glass of wine and the food menu followed suit. There is a pleasant garden patio at the rear with an amusing notice asking patrons to keep the noise down and think of the local residents, quite ironic given that the house next door resembles a building site. I suspect that, in this area, the pub has its own set of wannabe devotees but for a better pub nearby try the Spread Eagle.
Millay - 5 Sep 2003 11:57
this is a very nice pub, there is a friendly atmosphere and the garden is very nice and cosy.
