The White Hart Inn, Margaretting Tye

Went to this puib a few weeks ago. Friendly bar staff and well kept beers. Food looked very good but there seemed to be some service issues on a nearby table. Well worth a visit.

The Cat Inn, West Hoathly

Dark Star and Harveys beers - all kept well.

Had a good meal here, not cheap but good value for money as it was all cooked to order. Very good service.

The Masons Arms, Upminster

Went for a meal with a group of 13 people. Service was very good and everyone enjoyed the food.

The only negative point was that one of the bar staff gave VERY short measures when pouring a pint of Directors. He did top it up a bit after being asked. The other 2 bar staff poured a reasonable pint. I dont think they sell much real ale as the beer tasted slightly stale - but not bad enough to take it back.

Not sure how this pub will survive. The food prices are high, and generally more expensive than other restaurants in the area. Tapas prices seemed very expensive. On a Saturday night most tables were empty.

Would not consider going back on a regular basis even though it is a 5 minutes walk...but may go back once or twice a year for meals. We will continue to go to the railway in Hornchurch despite the extra travelling time as it has more atmosphere and the food is cheaper.

The Round Table, Leicester Square

Although the pub is better than ones near by we had a bad experience.

We were consistently served short pints - at least a 1 inch head on Greene King IPA. One pint had even more head so I asked for it to be topped up. After putting a very small amount of extra beer in I asked them for a proper top up. This was refused because 'we are not allowed to serve a whole pint'. Needless to say we asked to see the manager...who turned up 20 minutes later and said the problem was down to large staff turnover.

Just to make matters worse we were served an off pint of London Pride. When we took it back they said they knew it was off when it was being put into the glass. Not good!

The Rose and Crown, Wimbledon Village

Bar staff were fine when we visited. They topped up pints without being asked and we never had to wait long to be served.

There was a problem with one of the meals - they gave us the wrong one initially and it took some time to get it replaced. The manager came over, apologised for this and gave us all free desserts and coffees. In the past we had no problems with ordering food (they do good sunday roasts).

The Victory Inn, Brighton

Pub was very close to our hotel so ended up having our last drinks in here on Friday, Saturday and Sunday night.

Had Old Peculiar each time - very nice. Did not try the other 3 beers.

On Friday and Saturday the place was lively and the bouncer was turning a few people away. On Sunday night it was empty. Service was generally good and prices were OK.

The Druids Head, Brighton

Did not go the pub before they done it up but it was OK for us. There were 3 beers on in the afternoon but only 1 when we went back later in the evening.

Good service and managed to get a table outside.

Crumpled Horn, Upminster

On the positive side the beer was good, I was drinking Banks, and the prices were at the same level as other pubs in the area. They ran out of vodka, which seemed to cause panic behind the bar why dont they have extra bottles in stock?

But WHY DONT THEY TURN THE MUSIC DOWN. Sorry, had to shout as that is what I ended up doing last night when trying to talk to the person next to me. When the pub opened a few years ago is was run by a very good landlord who came around to talk to people, and the music was kept at a reasonable level. Sadly those days are long gone.

The evening started OK but they put the volume of the music up at 9pm. We were trying to order drinks at the bar when we saw them turn the volume up the first time. Within 5 minutes we were still trying to get served people started to come up to the bar and ask them to turn it down. Apparently the policy is to keep turning the volume up on Saturdays as that is what people want. After someone finally found the manager he agreed to turn it down. This lasted for about 45 minutes and then it got turned up againand againand again. By 10:30 most people had left we heard people saying that it was too loud and we followed. If we go back it will only be after learning sign language so there will be no need to shout.
