The Cock Inn, Ringmer

One of those pubs that makes you feel better straight away, before you've even sipped your first pint of Harveys.

The Victory, Hamble

The Ringwood Best was fine The food was fine. The prices were fair. The service was friendly. And as if all that was not enough, the lovely landlady volunteered to reverse my car out of their distinctly challenging car park. I don’t think I looked incompetent. I think she’s just a very nice person. We shall certainly return.

The Flowerpots Inn, Cheriton

Despite being a very regular user of this pub, I wasn't aware that it had a manager. It is run by its proprietors and their staff. Like all pubs, it has its good points and its weaknesses. After 44 years, the people who run it probably know what opening hours are appropriate for their pub. The other 'pub' that Trethias is so enthusiastic about may or may not be as wonderful as he likes to imagine, but I rather doubt that it would feel like a pub to me, no matter what the Good Beer Guide says. The GBG is very far from infallible, quite the opposite.

The Bugle Inn, Twyford

Good to see Ladymiss maintaining the pattern of breathless excitement in reviews of this 'pub'.

I'm curious, though, as to why she considers Bowman's Swift One is 'ladylike'. Is it that ladies are always up for a swift one?

The Jolly Drover, Hill Brow

Excellent pub. Outstandingly friendly barmaids and landlord (despite him being a Pompey supporter I suppose someone has to be). Seriously, though, not a heavily football-ish pub, just good humour. We only had sandwiches, which were beautifully presented and very tasty.

Beyond the usual Doombar etc was Bowman Wallops Wood. Very nice too.

This is one of those rare things, a pub where you feel welcome the moment you cross the threshold. Long may it prosper.

White Horse Inn, Rogate

One of those pubs, increasingly frequently encountered, where you get a slightly restauranty welcome: 'Will you be eating?' But good fare and a generally pleasant atmosphere, though I do hate having to endure a radio droning away in a pub, especially when the GBG says it's a Quiet Pub. I love Harvey's beer, but on this occasion the Hadlow Bitter was in only average condition. It can be much better. All in all, though, a decent pub where the owners are trying to do things well. I'd be glad if it were my local.

The Red Lion, Bitterne

My pint of Courage Best at midday was just fine, and 2.80 - a fair price.

The Bugle Inn, Twyford

I popped into this pub for a pint and a packet of crisps at midday yesterday. The beer (Bowman Swift One) was delicious - in perfect condition. It needed to be: the pint and and a standard sized packet of crisps were 4.35 - and that's for a beer that is 3.8% ABV.

Really - the prices being charged in some pubs are ridiculous. No wonder pubs are going out of business. Mind you, the Phoenix across the road is doing the same thing. Greene King London Glory (4% ABV, but not at all glorious) is being sold at 3.55 a pint.

Who can afford to drink at those prices?

Going back to the Bugle, I did find a certain similarity of style (breathless with excitement) and vocabulary in the comments, which were almost all about the food. Is it a restaurant or a pub?

Much as I enjoy the products of the Flowerpots Brewery and Bowman, I shall not be drinking their beers at those prices.
